You are a life saver! Been trying to find out why my LCD screen was so dim and this was the exact issue. Can finally see my display again!!!

I am new to electronics repair as a hobby. I recently tried the Amtech flux and was amazed at the difference in quality. Really makes a difference when soldering.

First video of all them that showed the type of flux and part number. I was always wondering what they were using. I been getting these out of scraps yard and doing minor repairs like lights, steeper motors and pdrl displays cause of here. I can bring most back to life. Now to maybe try to repair a dim message / odometer display on 03-06. Seen the resisters to solder and then how to heat and replace that square chip if need be. Only one video shorta shows that issue. Now going to try these 99-02. These 99-02 steeper motors seem to be an issue and have to installed same way. I learned record player oil can be added to them to make work again. Cool little trick and ordered if off fleabay $8

You can see the crack running around the solder puddle. Known as a cold solder joint.

I have a question. I tested the resistance and it is .3 across the resistors but from the end to end it still reads just .3. How do I reach you to learn more??
@SeanBZA5 жыл бұрын
Common fault with this type of cluster, you sould really use a higher melting point solder to do them again, but will work for a long time again. The 100R resistor really should be upgraded to a 1W part, as it is the power supply for the cluster controller, and runs a little too close to maximum power. Higher wattage will run cooler, and still will fit there. Yes LED conversion will be nicer, but at least those you can get LED retrofits that are drop in replacements, and which work well.

I was thinking the same thing about the 100R resistor.

My Gage cluster gear selector and a odometer do not light up and oil gauge flickers back and forth I have changed the oil sending unit and it still does it what would you charge to do this.

My 2006 avalanche info vfd is too dim to read in daytime. Is that a light switch dimmer control issue?
@norcal7152 жыл бұрын
Does the brightness of the display change when you change the dimmer? or is always stuck on dim?
@Peter_Riis_DK3 жыл бұрын
Nope. A perfect looking solder joint is not looking like a ball, it is actually concave and of course shining like silver. The ball is a sign of excessive solder material.

Is there a way to rejuvenate vf displays big Clive said something about a nine volt battery
@zaprodk5 жыл бұрын
That's a good way to blow the filaments.
@jeffescortlx4 жыл бұрын
I do remember someone made a video talking about burning off some sort of build up on the filament. But with these 99-02's the VFD are very reliable, the issue is alway either the resistors or header pin.
@norcal7154 жыл бұрын
I remember in the late 80s or 90s long before KZbin someone mentioned baking them in the oven to rejuvenate them. May be total BS but I thought I would throw it out!

I never use any more flux than what is in the solder. But then I always clean the connections so that you don't have to.
