so the real reason I looked this up is because I wanted to know what people did incase their fenders were rusted out and not able to put the (pine Trees) on the top. I see now its still possible so thank you! a lot of people also don't have any vids for gmc's so this is great!

Just did this today with ~$60 OEM flares bought online (looks like same ones shown in this video). Absolutely great final appearance. The only thing I did different was use rust reformer before installing and I cut around the bottom bolts that were frozen in this video. I had a little more rust on the fender around that bolt and feared the mount would break free. Used simple wire cutters to cut the plastic mud flap, since they get scrapped anyway. My only complaint is that the fasteners were crap and the heads kept breaking. Save your original clips as I needed to reuse 4 of them. This simple modification will prob buy me two years of good looks. I love this old truck!

@mikereilly83764 жыл бұрын
Should have used the penetrant FIRST before getting the torch out. And don't ever reinstall rusty bolts that are dry. Lubed bolts always makes the reassembly go smoother......and it shows that you care.
@TonyTheTruckGuy4 жыл бұрын
You seem to be under the impression that this is a new, rust-free truck 😂 The bolt did its job. I’m not too concerned with a 20 year old truck that has 250k+ miles.

I would have Por-15`d under the wheel wells as far I could reach prior to covering up the rust, POR-15 right over the rust and up underneath, then put the Flares on.

As big of a crap hole that this state is, I'm glad we at least don't have annual inspections. It should be unlawful for them to force you to fix that crap just because of a little bit of body rust. Especially when it's the state's fault for putting down salt in the winter.

Is there anyway to leave the mud flaps on AND have the fender trim installed at the same time? Or do the flaps have to come off in order to have the fender trim on? I have a 2000 Silverado extended cab and I’m wanting the 1-1.5” fender trim. Thanks to everyone.

I’ve seen trucks with both but I don’t think they were using the factory mud flaps, otherwise they wouldn’t fit right due to the changed contour of the fender

Yeah but I just wanted to show the actual install of the flares. A lot of people just do the cover up like this. It really wasn’t worth doing anything in this case because the truck was rusted to the point where it will for sure come back and it’s a 18 year old truck with 240k

@TonyTheTruckGuy5 жыл бұрын
The rocker and corner panels aren’t much for the part themselves, but the labor and paint will be costly. Unfortunately I haven’t had enough body work done to give an accurate estimate, and I’m not good at body work myself. I’d guess a couple thousand to get it done right.

Thanks for posting. I have a question for you or the community: Wouldn't the air pocket behind these just encourage the rust to grow faster? I like the idea of covering the rust, but will this make the issue worse?
@TonyTheTruckGuy3 жыл бұрын
If salt is a factor it will probably speed up the rust a bit. I’d recommend washing and drying the truck, then cover the rust with POR-15 or something before putting the flares on. This truck is an 01 with 300k on it, so I was more concerned with just the looks.

I’m wondering why not remover some of that rust and hit it with some rustoleum before putting flares on. And also, why not set with tape and then set fasteners.
@TonyTheTruckGuy3 жыл бұрын
If you set with the tape first, the fasteners may not line up right. If the truck was newer or less miles then I would have cut some rust out or hit it with some anti-rust, but at 20 years old with 250k miles, I just wanted it to look a bit better for a while.
