Be careful, I had mine in ventilation mode and forgot about it during a heavy thunderstorm this night here in Germany and it was so much rain that there was water flowing through the top part and dropped onto my floor and the cat who then informed me in no uncertain terms that there was a water leak directly onto his spot with the cushion... Normal rain is no problem though in ventilation mode, but with 40l/m² during roughly 30 minutes the window was overwhelmed from the flow off the roof over this window. I can't blame the window for this accident, that was just my "I forgot something important"...

I've fitted 14 No Velux roof windows to our house over a period of 15 years. TBH the prepared hole in the base of the frame has the obvious use shown here. The hole is identical to that in the top frame to hold the window open but storm proof and it was obvious as soon as you pivoted the window back for cleaning that the shoot bolt engaged with the lower hole - simple.

I've lived with, and cursed while cleaning, these things for years. No bloody idea! Thanks😂
@imaginitivity78535 ай бұрын
Actually, the other thing we curse these windows for is the sound of rain on them. We have them in several bedrooms and it's a pain to try and sleep though a rainstorm. We've previously discussed the practically of installing some kind of mesh screen to reduce this issue. And would you believe, whilst investigating the hole/slide lock issue you mention, I've just found there IS an extra, external screen on a roller blind fitted on two of our veluxes. So I'm looking forward to hearing how the sound of rain is affected. Unfortunately one of the two had a defective spring, so only the one in my son's room works. But I'll get more of they do the job. They also cut the incoming light so maybe will help reduce the heat in this rooms. Can't believe these windows are so poorly understood!

Thank you so much for this helpful tip! Is this the only way to restrict opening? I’ve looked everywhere & can’t find information on this! Unfortunately my large centre pivot window clearly wasn’t installed properly as the bolt doesn’t aline with the hole at the bottom so it can’t be locked into place for cleaning.
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT4 ай бұрын
Oh that's a pain, sometimes it's easy to think the top opening ones don't line up when you spin it round but that's just because the arms each side lift up. I can't explain why a center pivot one wouldn't. In terms of restricting the opening there is a specific velux product that you have to retrofit. Looks like a big faff though. I don't see why you couldn't fit a standard window restriction on though, you know the ones that have a rubber covered cable

I came across this when looking for something else. It’s interesting that even people that have installed then didn’t realise what the bolt was for ? If that’s the case then I am pretty sure very few certainly realise the other purpose of the bolt. That is to provide a guide when fitting or reinstalling the window. As anyone that has done it knows its tricky to take the whole window in and out, as you have line up the curved brackets and slide them in and out while supporting the window If you simply offer the window up, click the bolt into place and you will then find you can then pivot the window on this bolt while you engage or disengage the curved mounting brackets. While you still have to support the window because while the bolt is only on one side it’s a hell of a lot easier because it then takes most of the weight and allows you to line up the curved mounting brackets with one hand while positioning the window with the other hand. I have one Velux window that I have to take in and out from time to time to get access to a flat roof area to clean windows and gutters, and once you get the hang of this its so much easier. I once thought once why don’t Velux fit 2 bolts, then realised that having the bolt just on one side is better because allows you to position the window and line up the curved brackets better The first time you do it maybe have an assistant to hand, but I can assure you that once you get the knack its so much easier to remove and refit the windows. Why don’t Velux tell you this? Maybe its one of those things they cant tell you to do, because some will get it wrong, but it’s a lot easier for those handy enough to be able to use the feature. Good luck!
