See, something like this veers into the territory of being a wood art piece as much as a musical instrument, and you put a price on that extraordinary craftsmanship. I find the $800-1600 price point to be excellent value for us mortal players

I must agree with SOME brands (not taylor, martin, .. IMO) the value for 1000-2500 euro guitars is insane as they're very high quality with great sound. However, guitars going 3000-5000 have been a noticeable (but completely unnecessary) step up as well. Anything above that? Ehhhh... I can't tell anymore really.

I have owned a few Lowden's and anyone who has played one knows they are top guitars I have never played a duff one. I currently own a S32 6 string and my pride and joy an O38 12 string with Brazilian rosewood and they sound amazing. I think if you have the money a Lowden is a lifetime guitar that will never disappoint. If I had the money I would buy the F50 as they really are worth the money but that 79 quid guitar is superb for the money and a great started guitar. Ben is totally right when I started playing in 1981 a starter guitar was about £100 and rubbish so now started guitars are playable and superb value for money. Great video guys

What a lot of people fail to realize is that the high-end market has remained virtually the same while the low end has improved tremendously. 20 years ago you could only get a dead sounding box for under $100 but now there are brands like orangewood that make affordable guitars that sound incredible.

It really is amazing these days what you can get at the entry level--much more playable than the pawn-shop special I learned on many years ago. That said I still recommend newbies buy the best thing they can afford right off the bat because it's so much easier and more fun to learn on something that isn't fighting with you.

I just picked up a Lowden S32c. Its my only acoustic(aside from my Dad's old 80s Yamaha with 3 cracks in the neck and a head sized dent in the back). It cost me $6600cad, and was well worth it. It makes me want to play, feels perfect and has a really beautiful tone. Also came with a Hiscox case. It'll be a lifetime guitar for me, and I'd rather have one great guitar for life than a pile of them collecting dust. It will also make a nice gift to someone when my time is up.

I've got a 30 year old Lowden OM Redwood top guitar. After about 5 years, the truss rod started to rattle on certain notes. After a few more years, the action started to get too high to play comfortably. I discovered that it was due to what I consider a defect in the string-through bridge design. The upward pressure of the strings behind the saddle compresses the wood, and changing strings further sands down the same spots. This decreases the break angle, and that compromises the volume and tone of the guitar. Plugging those holes and re-drilling them by hand was not fun. The neck also needs a reset, and I have to use very light gauge strings on it to make it barely playable. If you want a soundboard that will age well, get Spruce, not Redwood, if you get my drift. The guitar sounded good, loud, with rich overtones when I first purchased, but it has not aged well. My advice is save your money. When I contacted Lowden about the problems at the times they occurred, all they gave me were excuses. Another thing to consider is the body is very deep, and even though I'm taller than average, and have long arms, it turned out to be uncomfortable to play.

I have a Lowden O32 and also an Avalon L32 -- they are almost identical except that the Avalon has a traditional style pinned bridge and the Lowden has the string through. The Lowden has a five piece ebony (or some other dark wood) and mahogany neck and the Avalon has the exact same pattern five piece but has maple in place of the aforementioned dark wood. They are one year apart in age and I believe both were made at the same factory by the same people. I string them 13-56 then downtune a half-step. The Lowden does show slightly more bellying than the Avalon, but the unplugged sound of the Lowden is quite notably airier and more piano-like than the Avalon. The Avalon sounds better through the pickups (identical Fishman rare earth blend and a K&K on separate output jacks in each guitar) so it gets more gigs and has shown more wear as a result. I hope my Lowden (being a spruce top) fares better than yours, and I'm sorry to hear that Lowden wouldn't help. I had a similar experience with PRS... the locking wing tuners on my '93 CE24 -- which members of my family have owned since new -- literally fell apart in 2020, and there's no compatible replacements due to the shared-screw design on the G&D. PRS literally told me "yes we know those are a flawed design, that's why we stopped making them, and don't make a replacement. Sorry" essentially telling me I'm out of luck. I was going to buy a Vela but after that I ditched the brand entirely.

@rickyanthony no worries I apologise for being snarky I have played many lowdens since I live in Northern ireland and have been at the avalon factory many times. I suppose you aren't hearing what I'm hearing, and that's OK. Firstly, tone is subjective isn't it? Secondly I was being a bit dramatic but that's what I hear lol. For what it's worth every Gibson acoustic I've played has sounded dull and muffled. Once again, entirely subjective. Have a great day!

I would dispute what he said regarding the stability of low end guitars. I've got one of the very early Tanglewood "Martin" knock offs from the very beginning of production (TW400N model.) It's been basically through hell and back over the years. 7 years untouched and unplayed in an uninsulated loft where temperatures ranged from -7 to +40 and the humidity went from low 10's to high 90's. Resurrected and probably nearly 40 years later is the most reliable and stable (in regards to tuning) of all my guitars. It might not be the most dynamic guitar out there but I guarantee that, at the end of days, it'll be the only one still in tune 🤣

Fun episode, well done 😊 What you might have shown is the difference in sustain and harmonic ring ... I heard Ben do some "chimey" notes on the Lowden, and I was waiting for him to try that on the East Coast ... Saying that, I do wish starter guitars were this good back when I started. They were horrible and we struggled through somehow ... But not fun. That east Coast seems to be fun instrument and great for the beach, camping, pic-nics, etc 😁

I agree in many ways. I had various guitars and decided to treat myself, so I specc'd a brand new Lowden 32se, to my own preferences, nut width, neck shape, etc, and paid £3995 which I thought was a fair price, because it comes with the LR Baggs anthem pickup installed. My dream guitar is a Lowden F50c but at around £8000 starting price, I certainly don't expect it to sound noticeably better than my 32se.

Jup. There's a point in price where you don't get more actual quality in the instrument, but extras on cosmetics etc. That point is a lot higher in acoustics than in electrics, but it's not 12k. It. Is. Not. More like the 3k you were mentioning and that's already I generous estimate, imo.

It honestly blows my mind that it's possible to build a $100 acoustic guitar. I've had a 110e Taylor for 9 years and have beat the shit out of that thing and it is still kickin well. Granted 9 years ago it was $750 but that compared to my $4000 Custom Shop Martin, 750 ain't too bad lol. The Martin blows it away but when I need to bring out an acoustic guitar to a hot outside gig I grab my beater Taylor. Budget guitars definitely have their place

I think when you have that kind of budgets, or NEED that kind of budgets it is not so much what that guitar HAS, but whether that guitar can meet the specific, undoubtedly very detailed wishes and sensibilities, by nature or by education or experience, of your musical hearing. 99% of us mortals don't have this sensitive auditory developed taste, so what the guitar has to offer doesn't matter in this respect.

No one, of course, debates between buying a £99 guitar and an £11K guitar. No one thinks "well, I've never played a guitar before but I think I'll stretch a bit and buy the Lowden". So by the time you're thinking about the Lowden you probably already have a guitar that cost £1200 and understand what the upgrade path is. Where the question becomes serious, though, is how much you should stretch to for the first guitar: do you spend £99, £350 or stretch to £700?

Price is justified by the years of knowledge aqcuired by the luthiers. It's not something you can just document and copy. Not the details, at least. Nevertheless: sustainable (exotic) wood sourcing is something that demands a premium as well. There are numerous of factors that bump up the price of these range of guitars. I also have questions about how a guitar (the other one) that looks this good can be manufactured for so little money. Shipping, retailing, brand premium, hardware, recycling, etc. cost x-amount of as well. Are the workers underpaid or do they work in hazardous environments? is the wood unsustainably sourced? Is the manufacturer making loss to ruin the competition and bump up the price later as some sort of business plan? Is the manufacturer part of a money laundry organisation? Not that you should increase the price of a product to defy these questions. Because the money ends up where it shouldn't probably... I honestly don't know. But, I'm not a retailer so forgive my ignorance.

Maybe the Lowden just way overpriced, had you considered that, why is it that price, as you said yourself the two instruments did'nt sound that far apart, bloody ridiculous , the Lowden is just made of wood, like the other guitar, so where's the thousands of dollars price variation coming from????

@@akwamarsunzal Just come back, had a great time. The open mic event I go to, is for talented musicians who play complicated fingerstyle pieces, not some pissed up open chord strumming pop music night. Yes, the Lowden sound was very much appreciated !!
