Don't be fooled: chemically the qualitative difference between Silver (Ag) .000 (or 99.9%) versus Ag .0000 (or 99.99%) is huge. If you are using silver for the preparation of colloidal solution to treat some medical condition, make sure you are not ingesting unwanted heavy metals other than silver itself.

I know your comment was some time ago, but the nature of it compels me to provide a warning. Given the risk of counterfeit or even contaminated product, especially from the internet marketplace, I would be VERY wary of ingesting anything from the coin or bullion markets. Some bullion and coin products now even contain electronic tracking technology which if you just cut or grind up an item, you may not know it was there, and end up consuming those metals, plastics, and other materials as well. Counterfeit items from the Big Overseas Country Mainland "C" have been a huge problem for many different types of products sold on the internet, and it has a record of including unsafe levels of dangerous contaminants in their counterfeit and even in non-counterfeit products (like licensed baby food and plastics used for storing/handling food.

I'm just curious what the typical impurities are in either .999 or .9999? I know silver can sometimes be the byproduct of gold deposits, but obviously there wouldn't be any of the more precious stuff left in there, so what is it - tin? mercury?

@Chivalrous4208 жыл бұрын
The price you pay above the spot price is the premium. So if you pay $19.00 for a 1oz round and silver is 17.72 per oz, you paid a $1.28 premium on that round

In my limited experience, I can by four 9s Canadian silver coins at or lower than US three 9s or Australia four 9s silver coins. A bigger factor over the purity issue is the exchange rate for the two currencies and cost of shipping and handling. Your region may reflect similar observations, eg. Australian minted products (often four 9s purity) will be cheaper in Australia than US minted products, because, at the very least, the cost of shipping/handling and exchange variations in the currencies at the time of sale and likewise for Canadian minted products in Australia. This observation does not even touch artificial influences like scarcity (low number of imported pieces vs domestic production) that affect pricing on retail level sales. If you are not paying spot pricing then you are buying at the retail level regardless of volume of purchase.

I do luv me some Maple Leafs ;) Honestly, all 'coins' are going to have a premium over bullion (generally speaking) and often the premium for MLs is less than AEs. Plus the face value is higher, should it come down to that. And since the exchange rate between USD and CAD is nowhere near 1:5 that may (should) factor in. Kinda depends on what day it is and through which lens you view it. Caveat: My humble opinion only. Your mileage may vary. ;)

Thanks for the info. I just looked at the Andean site and it looks as though they are selling today at $43 (spot currently at $28) so these are selling at roughly $15.00 over the spot price of silver. On their site it claims to be the "World's Purest Silver Round" so in my opinion this is a cool novelty item, but a bad investment. $28 x 0.00099 = $0.02772 of extra silver, but not worth the $15 premium. I have been buying .9999 Canadian Maples about a dollar cheaper than .999 American Eagles. Why is this? Especially if .9999 is "more pure" than .999? Thanks to anyone who can answer this.
@philipperichard37089 жыл бұрын
+Tyrone Buckley Hi Tyrone. In fact, the answer of your question is in the question itself, you paid more money for your bullion at the U.S Mint than at the Royal Canadian Mint only because of the renown of the currency in which the coin have been Minted, even if the American Silver Eagle has only 1$ face value instead of 5$ for the Maple Leaf, the notoriety of the producer's currency is a factor of value in every bullion that has a mint mark belonging to a given nation. Now that said, I prefer to rely on the purity of a bullion than on the renown of it's strike since any reputation can be smashed down but not the intrinsic value of a precious metal.
@CoastGuardIDC9 жыл бұрын
Philippe Richard I don't believe that to be the case, Phillipe, because I bought my Canadian 5 dollar silvers from a Canadian mint.....from the Canadian government. Maybe I didn't understand your answer?....thanks.

It is like buying clothes, some countries make better quality clothing then other countries but at a lower price. For example-I doubt that the ".999 American Eagle and the .9999 Maple" are sold by the same place-also, you are talking about 'coinage'that is why Philip is talking in terms of the coins face value instead of the silver is self. If you are simply only interested in "Silver Purity" then one may as well stick with buying silver rounds instead of silver coinage

You comparing owing "stocks" to owing silver or gold?
@crunch98767 жыл бұрын
i was really just commenting on your flawed logic. but sure if you want i can compare owning silver to owning stocks, more specifically an S & P 500 index fund. silver holds its value pretty well, you can actually hold it, historically not as volatile, tends to keep up with inflation. S&P 500 goes up in value, gained in value over any 15 year span, tends to beat inflation, your money works for you and takes advantage of compound interest. Had you invested in the S&P 500 in the worst time in our lifetimes aka in 2007 before the bubble collapsed you would have broken even about 5 years later today 10 years later you'd have a 50 percent profit. thats buying at the worst possible time. its been 6 years since silver was at record highs and you would still have about a 60% loss if you bought high. Now lets go back to 1990 and compare silver to the S&P 500 if you bought them then silver was at 7.60 today its at 18.25 congratulations you've more than doubled your money you still have your principle plus 140% in profit. not to shabby right? Well the if you had invested into An S&P 500 index fund you would have made 590.722% (not reinvesting dividends and not adjusting for inflation) but aha you say inflation means you didn't make that much. well adjusting for inflation your return was 283.268% about 40 percent higher than silver oh and remember that's not reinvesting dividends so no compound interest ( kind of like silver investing) if we reinvest dividends and adjust for inflation our return is 547.079% blowing away silver while still adjusting for inflation. (reinvesting dividends but not adjusting for inflation is 1066.160% in case your interested.) Now let's go back 200 years. im going to switch to gold since im more well informed in its price and return in the past 200 years. If you had invested 10k in gold a little over 200 years ago and at the same time also invested 10k into stocks and 10k into equity how much would you have in inflation adjusted terms? The gold investor would have turned his $10,000 into $26,000. The bond investor would have turned his $10,000 into $8 million. The stock investor would have turned his $10,000 into $5.6 billion. again all inflation adjusted. Precious metals hold their value stocks go up in value, but let's ignore everything i said since it's all just academic discussion right? Now as you can probably guess like anyone who watches videos like this i do own some silver but unlike most on here its not my only asset nor the majority of my net worth and I weigh all investment options.
@crunch98767 жыл бұрын
btw number where inflation adjusted using the CPI. I understand the CPI isn't a perfect measure of inflation but its on the best we have and if you believe like i do that real inflation tends to be higher than the CPI that doesn't change the finding of my comment. silver price in 199- was also inflation adjusted.

As I understand it, A 999 fine silver coin, and a 9999 fine silver coin, both contain at least 1 oz of pure silver. The 999 just has to have a gross weight that's about 0.1% more than the 999. A 999 coin has to weigh about 31.135g to have 1 oz of silver. A 9999 coin has to weigh about 31.107g to have 1 oz of silver. Most coins weigh well above either of these numbers. So it's not a question of quantity of silver, but purity of silver. And still no one cares.

To me and you 3x9's is pure enough. HOWEVER, there are numerous chemical reactions and industrial processes requiring 4x9s. IF IF IF ..... there is an unforeseen supply crunch on silver because industry requires it on a more massive scale, or financially silver is demanded again as real currency and technologically honed via block chain or some other newer delivery system; do you expect industry to pay the same for 3x9s Ag if they need to take the extra steps, money, and time to refine your silver further into the needed 4x9s so they can complete their chem/industrial processes? A~ nope, they will pay less for 3x9s and more for 4x9s. RCM= one of the most if not the most recognized throughout the world some of the best security features purity meeting top PM retail and all INDUSTRIAL standards cheaper than any silver gov issued currency I've seen. If 4x9s is cheaper and they offer all of these benefits.... then why would anyone buy 3x9s?
@xephael34854 жыл бұрын
Industries are not going to trust .999 or .9999 purity marked anything for critical applications. They'll send it all to a refiner who'll refine and re-assay the metal for their application. The assay and certificate on bullion is mainly worthless. Even .925, .800 and .40 will be fine for industries that need high purity metal as it'll be refined and assayed again.
