Thank you! I have quite a few instruments with HPIB/GPIB and this is the first youtube video on the subject of programming and using this bus that I have watched. I'll be honest, I haven't tried searching on the subject, but I have quite a few electronics channels I watch and this is the first of those to touch on the subject. I would love to see more!

I am so glad to have found this channel. And this is really the 999th video from you? Holy crap, looks like I know what I am going to watch over the next 6 months

Do you have any videos on calibration of these test equipments? I am not referring to the calibrate function or open-short-load calibration. I mean equipment that has been sitting for years that gets sent to a calibration lab. Most videos I find only talk in regards to the former. I'll have a search though. I am really stoked about this channel. Thanks!!!!

The calibration of the HP8711 is covered in the service manual. It was designed to be calibrated over HPIB with particular HP instruments. If you don't have those specific instruments then some of the cal steps are not possible. I was a able to do about 60% of the steps without special equipment.

Thank you. This is extremely good because hpib tutorials and examples are quite rare, which is strange because GPIB is still used in industry and HP Basic is still produced, and updated! I've seen this done using a pc and a national instruments adapter. I didn't know you could run a program from a network analyser though , which is really interesting. You mentioned the difference between the two buses, one being internal and the other being external. Is this set by default or is it a standard? I am sure I've seen this designated to two external gpib networks in the past using two gpib adapters from a single pc, one being 700 the other 800? The last two digets denote the IP address.

Yes, the controller has an address also, usually 7. so most controllers use 7xx for the control where xx is the address of the unit to be talked to. As you say you could have more than one controller on the buss, so they just used that protocol inside the instrument and dedicated 8 as the internal buss and 00 as the unit address.

@@IMSAIGuy Hi again, if you ever get the time, it would be helpful to demonstrate how to do this using gpib from a pc. Including what's needed in the background as a bare minimum. Its easier from the analyser as that is , I presume, acting as the controller. It is fun admittedly but not really practical in a test environment I think. On the pc you would need to bind libraries and 488 standard. I am trying to learn how to do this but most videos are, it seems to me, incomplete, especially if your trying to do this in qbasic or VB

I’m playing with HPIB And the prologix usb. Looking for a way to use my newer laptop to run hp basic. I’m a hobbyist so it takes me a long time to work this stuff out. You are one of my favorite youtubers! I have several HPIB instruments. One is 59309a clock

those clocks are pretty rare. I don't think I've seen one in person. I have a prologix usb adapter also. they work well.

@@IMSAIGuy yes they do one command at a time.

@@markgreco1962 ??? you mean the config program? one line at a time. That adapter maps the USB to a serial port on your computer, then you use any programming language to send command to the serial port.

@@IMSAIGuy yes!! What program do you use? That is where I’m struggling
@IMSAIGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@markgreco1962 in the past I have used Matlab. I tried GNU octave but it does not have as good of drivers, works some. Any program that can write and read serial ports should work.
