Hello from India , my December 2011 make VW Polo 1.2 TDI driven 150000kms consumes 500ml to 1500ml engine oil depending upon cold starts running instantly without warming up. Another factor that I have noticed is different brands of oils are consumed or oxidised differently depending on their quality. 1. When I used Castrol Magnatec professional 5w-40 for 6 consecutive oil changes, engine consumed or oxidised 750ml oil in every 15000kms. 2. When I changed to Castrol Edge 5w-40 for the 7th service at 105000kms, engine consumed or oxidised just 500ml in 15000kms. 3. Now when VW workshop changed to Shell 5w-40 inside their VW printed grey bottle for 120000kms mark and 135000kms mark, Engine consumed or oxidised 1500ml reaching 15000kms. So what I have felt is, it's not only the engine's design flaw that contributes to the oil consumption but also the chemistry of the oil that contributes to the oil consumption.

The oil consumption issue is due to the piston rings they used from 2009 to mid 2013. They are thin to "reduce friction" and get coked up with carbon really easily and don't scrape oil off the cylinder walls like they should. They either get stuck inside the ring lands or in more extreme cases, get stuck slightly expanded and break scoring up the cylinder walls, etc. You can try doing a piston soak with Marvel Mystery Oil by simply removing a spark plug, making sure the piston is at bottom dead center and simply pouring it in through the spark plug hole filling the cylinder. Obviously, you don't run the engine in this condition. Let it sit anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Then with the plug still removed, crank the engine over ( Remove the fuel pump fuse so it doesn't try and fire and the injectors aren't spraying gasoline into the cylinder you are trying to clean out.) to remove the remaining MMO. Place a shop rag over the hole to collect what sprays out. Replace the spark plug, coil, and fuses you pulled and change the oil. Next, drive it like you stole it for a while on the highway. It will probably smoke a little and that's to be expected due to some MMO remaining in the cylinders.

I also injected distilled water steam to the air intake while engine idling for at least 15 minutes. And drove the car hard. Repeated the process 5 times each day. That helped recover compression from 170 to 178 and got rid of oil consumption.

I’m a little confused, how to you crank the engine over to make the pistons be at the bottom like you said. And also why would I need to replace the spark plug and coil if it’s the piston rings that are the issue. Lastly, would I replace each spark plug and coil or just the ones from which I poured the MMO in, i guess you’d pour MMO on every piston

It's the poor design of the oil ring holes in the piston and the oil rings themselves. The oil ring holes in the piston get blocked and the oil cannot be wiped off the cylinder walls and return to the sump. The oil therefore enters the combustion chamber and is burnt. I was told this by my VW dealer and I'm having my pistons and rings replaced. They recon that this problem was only discovered 2 years ago, I call bullshit as VAG have known about this for at least 5 years. VAG are super dishonest....Don't buy their products! You will get caught eventually and be up for big $$$$ to fix their design flaws.

In the UK I worked at an Audi Franchise and it mostly affected the A4 B8 and A5 1.8 and 2.0 tfsi engines. The fix was modified pistons and con rods. We had a tech who could take an engine out do the work and have it back together usually within a day (assuming all parts were available).

No one is scamming you out of engine oil. Why the inflammatory title? My B7 A4 was doing fine without any appreciable oil consumption, up until the PCV valve failed in the open state a short while ago, causing so much pressure that oil is now leaking a bit. My Audi is quite old now being made in 2005. It has to do with the piston rings and the amount of exhaust gases building up. It's not just Audis that have this problem, but there are several things that can fail that can cause the engine to burn or leak oil. He is correct, it's not normal, but I am suggesting that his Audi had some issue that he didn't know about, or that he's not telling us about. Either way, he said that he had no major problems with his A3, so why is he worried? Why didn't he try to find the solution before selling it? Now it's someone else's problem I guess. Maybe it's just me, but I would not sell a car without telling the new owner what's going on with it, especially if I felt strongly enough to make a KZbin video of it.

Instead of labeling it a scam and going ahead and using different oil weight you should have taken your car to Audi service center and tell them you want "oil consumption test" done which is free. And if Audi service center confirms your car in fact consumes unnatural amounts of oil they will fix your car at free of charge. True story because it happened to my 2010 A4 2.0T in 2016. Audi dealer ended up changing pistons, piston rings, all gaskets and whatever else for free as a settlement to customers with this problem. Go figure its scam genius.

Audi used slightly oval pistons in the A4 2.0t....i did hundreds of pistons and rings jobs at the dealership, we swapped A3 pistons and rings into A4 and that stopped it. Sometimes you would find scored cylinder walls and had to replace the block.

The older 2.0 PCV systems dumped a lot of oil in the intake too. I wonder if that was a part of it? Not sure of the exact year it changed but at least 2017 and newer have a much better PCV system.

Audi isn’t “scamming” anyone. The oil consumption issue is actually 2 factors. #1 being the design of the pcv system which is very minimal consumption, just check for oil in your boost hoses. #2 being the design of the pistons that VW makes Audi use in the 2.0 and smaller motors which causes the piston rings to wear prematurely, hence the recall and warranty extensions. And let’s not forget, all of the German manufactures were screwing with emissions, VW just got caught.

Well, the huge fines that VW / audi has received for the scam has to be paid from somewhere. This means that the quality has deteriorated very quickly. I recently heard that the (far too weak) chain driven camshaft that also drives the oil pump of a vw (vw golf I believe) just runs in aluminum ..... unbelievable. This means that if the chain drive breaks, it only takes a few seconds and the head is damaged so that the head has to be removed. I have always been an Audi fan but the time when they built good cars ..... your 80s and 90s ..... is over. My next car no audi.

2015 in Switzerland I bought used Audi a4 b8 1.8 tfsi with a 55 000 km. And very short after I realize that something isn't right. Every time when I was checking oil, I must buy 1 liter.... intervals every 1200, 1500 km. He was on Garanty, and guys from official service take him and make some repairs. After that everything is allright. But in the meantime, I must change clutch, on 65000 km, on normal driving... After the repair, it still made me a problems. After 90000 he start to consuming more oil, like on the begining... And quality of the materials in cockpit, very bad. And now, I sold this car, very disapointed in top German brands... I swear, new Audi cars isn't like old ones

back in earlier years like 2000 VW paid Getrag for the transmissions and they were worth more than the engines were. For sure they started saving money and that means it doesnt last as long. My clutch was still working fine after 500,000 kilometers when I sold the car. Engine was producing smoke probably valve seals and maybe rings on 1.8T

Mazda rx8’s are thirsty when it comes to oil. Alfa twin spark engine was variable in its usage The viscosity of the oil breaks down. The burning gives you room to put some in.

I can tell you about why the oil problems exists on VW AG engines. Lack of running in process in the first kilometres of the car when new. No matter how close to perfectly round the cylinders are drilled at the factory, there are minute imperfections in the cylinder wall. By using top gear on the motorway and going from 2000rpm (90km/h) to 3000rpm (160km/h) rapidly (full throttle) and then letting the car compression brake back down to 90 or 100 km/h, the rings will be compressed under load, and press firmly against the cyclinder wall. You car might use 0.25 to 0.5 L in the run in process, but after that, no / minimal / usual consumption (until piston rings worn out).

Nah, it's not your heavy foot. These still had the problem in the B8.5 & B9 platforms (so yours') can be these things; PCV Failure Plugs & Wires, Ignition Coils, Fuel Injectors Motor Mounts. Honestly if I knew that VAG had 24yrs of this problem, I'd have never bought an Audi. My 2014 A5 has been a tank, until it started chugging oil. Then it starting chuggin at low RPMs which progressed into full on injector failure & a bumpy ride from a jumpy engine. The throttle body also gets carbon buildup, which causes all these other things to happen with it. Paid $13K for this car, I have no interest in putting in $9K+ in parts & labor to fix their design flaw. Even Kias can make it past 100K. These 2.0 Audis will BRICK at 100K if you don't basically rebuild the whole EPC system & rebuild the entire engine.

My 2009 Mazda 2 1.5 has 130.000km and does not consume any oil at all. It's been almost 10.000km since I last changed the oil and the level is still on full! My mother's 2010 Renault Clio 1.2 16v has 120.000km and consumes about 0.5-1l for every oil change (which she does at 20.000km cause she only drives to work and back on country roads, so the engine is under very little stress). I think the reason why a lot of newer cars, especially ones with small turbo engines consume a lot of oil is because manufacturers are making engines with looser tolerances in order to achieve a cheap and easy way to reduce friction inside the engine and get slightly better fuel economy and emission figures. But this, as I said, a "cheap and easy" was of doing it. Not a good way.

The old rover P4 engine 2.6 straight six was designed to use oil and this needed topping up every 1000 mile or so. Just top up and no oil changes, brilliant! Also my Daihatsu. Sirion 1.3 uses approx 200mls every 1000 mile. It has done 130000 miles. I am happy with this!

There were 2 years of specific 2.0L models that had oil consumption issues. They were corrected. I had an Audi A4 with 275,000 miles and my brother bought for his kids. I currently have a 3.2L Audi A6 with 240,000 miles and a 2014 Audi A6 TDI with 112,000 miles. They go 10,000 miles with maybe 1/2 to 1 quart oil replacment.

Have 3.2 with 230k. Looking at sline 3.0 w 120 but found pending multiple misfires which couldn’t be felt. Just worried plugs and fuel treatment coil packs etc won’t be the solution as mechanic advised was probable. Guy wants me to make an offer today!

Perhaps you didn't know that Audi had some consumption problems in some cars. They changed pistons in those cars for free. Also, any time a customer is low on oil an Audi dealer tops it off for free. The idea of a "scam" is to make money, not lose it.

Guaranteed Audi engineers knew this wild create planned obsolescence... I have an Audi 2012 with 2.0TFSI engine and now 114.7k miles. At 80K it began consuming oil abnormally, at 100K it was eating 1 QT every 350-400 miles. At 112.7k miles, I did a Berryman's B12 piston soak via the spark plug port, I took my time and rented another car for a week and also went on a trip, two weeks time and repeated treatment, rotate and soak. Then I did liquimoly engine flush and replaced oil. I have now driven 2000 miles and guess what, no abnormal oil consumption and car is working great, highway MPG 27+ on I-95 from NC to NY this past week, in and about town 21MPG. Obviously this doesn't correct the design issues however I now have a procedure that will extend the life and performance of this vehicle for another 40K miles where I predict that I will need to replace the timing chain.

The beauty of having to add oil between oil changes is that you are technically trimming the oil charge , that can prolong engine life and prevent for further damage. I've owned 6 Audis in the last 22 years and for the most part they are pretty good with oil. My 2016 S6 goes through a quart (little less than a liter) of oil every 5,000 miles but that's when I'm changing it anyway. It's tuned, so I expect a bit more oil consumption. My 2010 Audi A6 3.0T had major issues with oil consumption. That was consuming about a quart of oil every 600 miles. I redid the rings and the problem stopped. He is definitely right about Audi saying that is normal in the owner's manual.

It's not about "cheap materials" or "poor build quality". It's about design issue with oil piston ring, and that's the common problem in new VAG (VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat) TSI engines. If those oil rings are replaced, problem with oil consumption is solved. I have 2 Audis, old 2.6 and 4.2. and I have no problems with oil consumption at all (both of them are around 280.000 km).

I had a 2007 2.0T A4 that lasted me almost 10 years from 65k to 220k until it was totaled in an accident, it burned 1L every 5000+km all the way up until it was tuned with 1.24Bar of boost. I think the B8 engines had a few more issues with oil consumption, I can only speak for engines offered in North America but they seemed to do ok up until 2009

My 2011 Audi TT 2.0 L TDI has 48,000 mls on the clock (bought used with 31,000 mls). I do my own servicing and no oil top up is needed in between once a year oil change. Annual mileage is 8,000. I don't think you should be complaining about Audi based on bad experience with one VERY HIGH MILEAGE vehicle.

I had the same problem with my AUDI 1.4 TFSI 2012 Model. Fortunately, I had read about a class action Law-Suit against Audi in the USA concerning this problem. They were found guilty of having used very weak material for pistons on a certain batch of Engines. Audi here in RSA told me "it was normal" for my car to be guzzling oil. I refused and made them replace all the pistons. This was a car which I bought brand-new and was only 3 years old at the time. The problem is now over.

What is the proud owner of an Audi Q5, 2014. Started eating oil to the tune of 1 quart every 400 miles! How Audi did acknowledge the problem and was willing to come up with 4/5 of the total to have the piston and rings done. The dealership however refused to cover their repair should something go wrong. What a joke the Audi dealer was and what a joke Audi is for allowing these cars to consistently have these problems.

My 2013 Audi Q5 started running out of oil after about 4 fuel ups. It also started misfiring I guess due to carbon build up however, I now add Lucas every oil change and it retains most if not all the oil. The only problem I've had is rough idle in the winter.

Just to let you know in the USA Audi was sued in 2012 and lost they extended the warranty to 8 years 80,000 miles the effected years are 2008 to 2012 you can google it and easily see what triply is going on and they do have a fix they replace your piston rings with the upgraded correct rings this is the real reason these cars use so much oil so yes it’s because the wrong piston rings where used in the block build it all is listed in the law suite also all you have to do is request the information under the freedom of information act. And if you ask me how I know I owned a 09 and had my engine repaired.

Jackson Walter it has to be 80,000 or less and 8 years or less to qualify for the warranty repair and they have a strict test they do to determine if it’s even covered, if it’s not it’s all up to you and that’s what happen to me and to rebuild the engine and turbo 13,500 is what mine came too.

I do my oil changes when it gets med to dark brown. My last car was a 20 yr old Toyota, did my own oil changes 245,000kms. No burning issues. My current car 25 yr old Honda at 232,000kms again no issues with burning oil. Sure the oil has protective capabilities but contaminants in the oil acts like sandpaper on engine parts. Nobody I know changes oil the way I do. They follow manufacturers advice. Manufacturers aren't expecting you to keep the car forever, it's just gotta last the warranty period and it looks good on paper that minimal maintenance should be done. Auto critics sometimes mention it's cheaper to own as maintenance is not high.

This is shocking! I drive 2014 Kia Ceed SW 1.6 CRDI and my car burns no oil between service interval. Oil dipstick is on max all the time when I check it. I was looking forward to buy 2014 Audi Avant 2.0 TDI just to get some more comfort on the back seats but it seems that it's not worth it. I'm afraid to take that risk.

I used to use Liqui Moly Leichtlauf 5W40 in my 2014 S4 and would have to add ~2 liters in between oil changes (which I do every 10,000 km or so). The last oil change I did, I used OEM Volkswagen 502.00/505.00, and from the time that I added the oil to the time that I drained it for my next change, the oil level gauge in my MMI dropped by maybe 1cm at most, so I'm guessing it only burned 1/4 or 1/5 of a liter over those 10,000 km. My brother uses Liqui Moly in his 2010 A5, though, and it consumes very little in between changes, around the same amount as my S4. Really it seems like you just need to try different brands until you find one your car likes. (Both cars are at ~120,000 km btw)

My dad bought his A6 2.0 TFSI 2009 brand new. It took about 2L oil in 15 000km. In 2014 I bought the car from him and changed to 5W-40 and it takes about 1-1.5L in 15 000km. Thing is, the car has now 210 000km and it consumes just as much oil as it did when it was brand new. I'm guessing it's by design(Not a good design though) :) But still that is acceptable. His previous Audi A4 B7 1.8T did not consume a drip of oil in 15 000km

got b9 a4 tdi 2.0, i just bought it and there were 4litres of oil inside, and i changed it for 4,7 litres of new one, so it did not consume more than 0,7L for last 30.000 km, I wonder if it will drain as much as youre suggesting, if yes ill be super sad :D and id have to not change oil but add oil 6x per 30.000 km of suggested change intervals by audi.
