We were there the weekend before you. Glad you enjoyed & yuletide greetings. BTW Coppergate not Coopergate. Coppergate means Street of the cup makers in old Norse. York & wider Yorkshire were at the heart of the Danelaw & Viking culture in Britain. We still use many of their words in Yorkshire dialect.

You've been to a lot of Christmas Markets this year. I take my hat off to you for travelling far and wide to experience them. I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year. I shall have to go to the one at York next year as you have made me wish I had been to it before. The Shambles was a meat market . There were meat markets there dating back at least 900 years. The current Shambles dates back to the 1300s. The reason that the buildings jut out on the levels above ground is because many centuries ago people were taxed for the amount of land their building covered. So, people built the storeys above ground level wider than the ground floor.

These markets are a very recent tradition in the UK. With Lincoln holding the first in 1982, copying a German tradition. Lincoln stopped holding in 2023 as the town was being too busy it was putting people visiting the town to buy from the traditional shops Other towns are now questioning whether Christmas markets are aiding or hindering the town economies especially as today the same stalls can be found at markets up and down the country.

They have a knock on effect. I drink regularly in a pub near this market and it gets crammed when the market is on..

@@lewisner just imagine you own a shop in a town and durring the busiest period stalls open selling the same as you restricting the footfall outside. However they can sell cheeper as they don't have your all year round expenses

Hello. Merry Christmas! May I make a request? My husband and I are very interested in moving back to England. However, the first time we were there it was courtesy of the Air Force. My husband is approaching retirement from the Air Force in the next year or year after, what steps should we take to be able to secure employment and the visa requirements. We will only have one child living at home with us by then. Our two oldest are adults. Any information would be appreciated.

I went to york Christmas market, to be honest I didn't find dat much excited, everything expensive, loved the city though, Manchester and Nottingham Christmas market is much better.
