What’s up guys, in this video I test, and compare, the 9mm+P Winchester USA READY 124 grain Defense round in 10% ballistic gelatin.
Fired at 10 feet away, through a Cotton layer, Fleece layer, into the gel.
Handguns used:
Glock 17 Gen 5, 4.49” barrel.
Glock 19 Gen 5, 4.02” barrel.
Glock 43 , 3.39” barrel.

I shot this round through some old deer meat out of the freezer i let it thaw completely and I put a cotton t-shirt over the meat which was about 10inches thick with water jug behind the meat it blew a hole a little bigger than size of a golf ball through the meat passed through all 10inches of meat stopping in the water jug even after hitting some bone and expanded beautifully its Definitely my new carry round this was done with glock 19 gen 3

Your feedback is very important to me especially in my startup time of creating these videos. I see KZbinrs and other ballistic ‘tech’s conduct these tests with typically only one handgun. I use 3 of the mainstream carry sized handguns because I’m a firm believer that what may work in one size, may not work in others. The round may excel from a 4.5” barrel but fail in a 3.39” barrel. TNoutdoors9 ran a few shooting tests. He was not impressed. ⬇️ The Ready Defense loads he shot barely made 11" in gel. The FBI says a ccw or 🚔 load needs 12-18" to do serious damage. Plus expand consistently, retain weight.

They appear to be optimized for a glock 19 length barrel. That means they would also do really well out of a glock 48 seeing at the 48 barrel length is right in between the 19 and 17. Think i might start carrying these mamajamas

Thank you for being the first to publish a video (that I know of) other than the manufacturer. I have shot these into organic gel (knox gelatin) through denim. very similar expansion and penetration results. It was designed for short barrel pistols and seems to live up to the expectations, at least, in gel. I have loaded it into my EDC pistol. Your video quality was great, excellent stats, succinct in presentation. Keep up the great work!

The Winchester promo videos, PR says they used a Glock 26 9mm. I have a few boxes of the Ready Defense. It seems decent in shorter, compact designs but I'm not 💯 sure it's worth regular CCW or home security 🏘. Winchester themselves said the LE type Ranger One was meant for 🚔 sales. The red "Ready Defense" was for the ccw guns. I will stay with PDX1 +P bonded, Critical Duty +P. ✔

I'm going to fire up my 40rd of Ready Defense 9mm then get my Critical Duty +P out. In fairness, Winchester themselves said Ready Defense is for new compact, ccw style pistols not LE duty guns. 👮🏻‍♂️ That's for Ranger One.

PDX1s had been available so i was carrying them till i found some HSTs +Ps earlier this year which i currently carry. PDX1 is my second choice now. But i have been thinking about loading the usa readys in my pc9 carbine just to try them out on a coyote or fox.....Dam Pesky critters.

Nice review, I appreciate the velocity results in different barrels. Was curious, as this load is very snappy in my Kahr CM9. Not uncontrollable, but not pleasant either.

I use it in my S&W SD9 VE and it feels mostly fine to shoot. Is the Kahr CM9 smaller than the SD9? Because I definitely wouldn’t want to use this ammo in a small pocket gun, that is for sure.

@@Nathan-zw7nq correct, the CM9 is a 3 inch barrel, 14 ounce single stack. It's a handful with +p. I do like the coating on this load due to the 100 plus degree summers in Texas.

Just picked up a box cause there wasn't really any other defense rounds other than Hornady Critical defense. After seeing a few Gel tests, it does appear that they are under penetrating to a degree in most tests. I would like to see a test done on a ballistic dummy torso.

Winchester sales says the red Ready Defense is meant for the private sector, ccw, 🏡 defense. The company markets 147gr 9mm Ranger One for law enforcement. It works better with FBI protocol tests, auto glass, steel, clothing etc. I have Ready Defense in my Glock 26 9mm gen 5 & my new PDP 4" Compact. The line is ✔. Well manufactured.

I have a 92x and a ppq and I asked Beretta if I can use p+ they said I read the manual but they don't say anything but don't reload rounds and I know I can use p+ with my ppq. Great video again.

From my research, the HST passes the complete FBI test. Which includes bare gel, heavy clothing, steel, wallboard, plywood, and auto glass.

@@shindukess my mistake. I’m still on my first cup of coffee after a long few days of working the streets haha. I, nor have I seen others, conduct any testing on this round. In fact, unless I fail to search hard enough, I have yet to see another test on this round period. I will one day in the near future conduct all my testing the same way FBI does. Unfortunately that way is very expensive and until I have a good following I just won’t be able to until then.

Clear gel usually yields smaller expansion and deeper penetration than real 10% ballistics gel, so this round is probably an under-penetrator.

the only advantages I see with these rounds is velocity, and the hollow cavity is filled much like critical defenses, to prevent clogging when passing through clothing and acting like a FMJ. Much like the VCrowns themselves when introduced to clothing.

So seems counterintuitive that the rounds would go faster given the shorter barrel length of the G19 to the G17 but then it comes around and goes slower coming out of the G43. Given the barrel length is around a 1/2" shorter as you go from G17 to G19 to G43 I would have expected higher average velocities with the G17 slower with the G19 and slowest with the G43. I also would have expected deeper penetration from the G17 and then the G19 and shallowest with the G43 given the velocity difference. I understand that at higher velocities the rounds will open up creating more drag but all three shots appeared to be fully opened so not sure why you would see two plus inches of penetration on the much slower moving G43 round.

A .4.49” barrel was used in this test. I’m sure a 0.01” longer barrel wouldn’t produce much different results. In terms of 5” I’m sure it’ll have a slightly higher velocity which in turns faster expansion and slightly less penetration.

@@mikelivingston6157 A 115 grain 9mm projectile traveling 1235 FPS is within the normal pressure range. Thus keeping it standard pressure. I just did a quick search, it appears to me that most 115 grain cartridges in 9mm become +P once it reaches about 1,300 FPS.

The difference in velocity from the g19 and the g17 is well within the variation of one round to the next. They're so close it doesn't even matter. You can't optimize something for a smaller barrel and have it lose velocity in a longer barrel. It doesn't work like that. Dropping to the 43 is where you notice an actual shift in velocity

It's obvious they're using fast powder, with the G17 having a slower average than the G19. Even the short barrel still rocked above 1150 average. Looks like a promising round... From a company that still sells the mediocre Silvertip

Let us think about this: cops (LEO) have to be able to shoot through windshields, sheet metal, etc. We private CCW don't need that kind of penetration. Further,. We want a round that doesn't penetrate like a Law Enforcement round. That makes this Winchester a perfect found for CVW.

@@828enigma6 Which conclusion? The Supreme SXT? That’s a fact. Winchester pulled it off the market and replaced it with the PDX-1. It had a very bad rep. This design, hex vent aside is very similar. Google the Supreme SXT.
