40 is good but the reason I never bought a 40sw pistol is that any benefits don't justify the downsides compared to 9mm. I carry a full size 9mm on duty and off. I get more capacity, less recoil, and about the same ballistics from 9mm. 40SW just doesn't offer enough benefits to switch. There's no doubt it's a capable caliber and I sure wouldn't want to get shot with it.

Two edged sword . .40S&W was still on the shelf after the 9mm quickly sold out . By a margin of 2 - 3 weeks, then. 40 was wiped out . But once ammo started trickling back into the supply chains , 9mm came back first ( between these two , and overall) ******************** " Standardizing your calibers , to simplify your supply concerns " only works , if you always maintain a constant stack of cases at all times . The most popular , and most commonly seen on shelves " during normal times " are the calibers quickly wiped off of dealer shelves , and out of distributor wear house.

Great unbiased test Tools. I carry 40s&w mostly if not 357mag. It's bc of what showed ballistically and mainly the hard barriers penetration benefit especially glass and windshields. I've always kept my preference even though 40 isn't the popular choice for some reason especially with folks my age (37) or younger. All the super high speed tactical flat range KZbin operators don't approve and that unfortunately rubs off on folks wanting to be the same as everyone and popular. Given this test was only gel, it does show clear results of wound channel potential and expansion. Other test are available showing real world objects but some reason that doesn't matter. LEO's switched bc of price and also soft handed shooters that seen they could get a less "snappy" round. Of course it is a lil bit snappy compared but it's not much more as you know from experience and the benefit is way worth it. But like usual, popular opinion of Internet is what sells. Most that choose hasn't even shot the 40s&w to even know. I appreciate you Tools and being not biased and being honest man. Sorry this got long lol. (Current EDC: Sig P226 40s&w mk25 style) 🐍🇺🇸 edit to say: I do want to give major credit to that 9mm HST and 9mm in general nowadays tho. When I first started to carry in the early 70's the debate was a wheel gun vs semi auto. I tried a few of the various 38 specials as a was in a Law Enforcement program in college and the norm was that local governments wouldn't allow their officers to carry anything else and I held then as I do now carry what you train with. I ended up taking the first EMT class and that started me on a career in EMS. I started to a 45 after seeing the effects on the human body. I never saw more than 2 hits, usually 1, center mass that didn't end the fight. But the problem was the 1911 single action. I went to 40S&W IMI Baby Eagle after again seeing the effects on the human body. I still carry that Baby Eagle but carry a 9mm SCCY CPX-2 when the weather dictates lighter clothing and concealment issues. Both of these are double action all the time and I favor the second trigger. If practical after seeing way to many people shot during my time in the field it would be the 40S&W everything over the 9mm.

Yup, those Ranger T’s in all three “major” calibers are INSANE! Their expansion is what still makes them “KING” out of the “Big-3” (9, 40, 45). I have 800 rounds of them in 357Sig. Heck, I should probably sell half of them to a museum!

Thank you for this test using the "same" technology for each caliber. Too many other people are comparing 9m hollow point to FMJ 40 or FMJ 45, which is stupid. The 9mm is more cost effective, but 40 S&W is far more powerful than 9mm, saying otherwise just isn't true.
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
Yep. I carry a 9mm but there's no doubt that .40S&W is the more powerful round.

I think the video should have either used the lightest or heaviest rounds in both calibers and then compare them would have revealed a better test. Test the 9mm, 115 grain against the 40 caliber,165 grains and then compare the 9mm, 147 grain against the 40 calibers, 180 grain. The video compared the heaviest 40 caliber round against a much lighter 9mm round.

Good video, thanks for the test. Looks like the 40 wins. Two mid weight bullet weights would be a good test between 9mm and 40S&W (124gr vs 165gr) or even light loads (115gr vs 135gr)

The 40s&w has gotten so much hate lately just because it is always compared against 9mm when it really shouldn't be, but having replaced 9mm across LE agencies for a while, they are placed as analogs competing for the same role. Choosing 9mm meant favoring it over .40, and today most people do favor it and for some good reasons. Some still favor .40 and i can see why as it is a devastating round. Both rounds have their own merits and advantages of course, but I think .40 is much better compared to the 45acp, and when seen through that lens i believe it is the far superior cartridge as it does most things better. The exception being suppressed use as the only place i see 45 being a clear winner. 40 gives more capacity than 45 and honestly i think better ballistic performance across the board. Especially in shorter barrels as 45 performance is drastically different with small changes in velocity. 10mm obviously can be compared with 40 as it is the magnum version of the round ideally, but both have their place and 10mm really only shines brighter when you use the properly powerful loadings. Where .40 shines in my eyes is in shorter barrel performance, as it’s velocity/performance ratio doesn’t very wildly, it is very consistent at always delivering a very considerable amount of energy per shot. It is a significantly powerful cartridge for a semi auto handgun and i'm glad it exists alongside 9mm as they really do so many of the same things well but both have distinct advantages that make them both worth considering.

When you’re comparing apples to apples, the 40 S&W beats the 9mm every time. A good rule to live by is to shoot the most powerful caliber that you can handle and that gives you the capacity that you’re comfortable with. Hits are essential. For me, the 40 hits the right balance but the 357 Sig is very alluring.

Great video. My employer tested both 9mm 124 and 147gr HST’s. The 147’s performed better than the 124gr through barriers. Not by much, but it went through windshield better and a solid wood door like someone’s front door. But I would use either one. John Correia from Active Self Protection chooses the 147gr HST as his EDC as well. It’s what’s loaded in ALL of my 9mm’s. Now I tested both weights out of my Ruger PC Carbine and the 147gr expanded larger than the 124. I think the longer barrel with the lighter 124 just made it’s velocity too fast. The bullet was designed for handgun barrels and not rifle barrels.

I have a family member who works directly in a role with Federal Premium. There is NO difference between the tactical law enforcement and the personal defense rounds-except packaging and price! They are made on the same equipment, they have the same cases, the same bullets, same charges, and *they are made together at the exact same time.* They literally come from the same batch but get different packages and different prices. The Personal Defense is a gimmick to make more money, and a lot of the big-box places such as Midway don’t sell the law enforcement version to consumers (again, it’s so they can make more $ from people who don’t know any better). Now, for a very _brief_ period of time, the Personal Defense rounds were getting an additional primer sealer treatment whereas the law enforcement wasn’t. But now they both get the same blue sealant. Buy the law enforcement version because you can get 50 for the same price that you’d pay for 20 PD at a big box.
