'Great Britain' is a geographical location rather than a political entity. It is the largest island that makes up the British Isles, therefore it will still be called 'Great Britain' no matter what happens to the countries on it. BTW, it got the name 'Great' Britain to differentiate it from Normandy and Bretan after the Norman invasion in 1066.
@intharthsnowfaller93762 жыл бұрын
The original name of this land was given by (maybe greeks?) but definitely Rome: Britannia The interim changes of individual country names changed over time untill eventually you end up with Scotland/Ireland/Wales/England in 1707 with the act of Union - that was when United Kingdom Great Britain started to appear as a name. It wasn't untill 1800's when they added Ireland to the fold that it became the United Kingdom of Great Britain And Ireland (which later became just Northern Ireland) The word Great Britain probably isn't the true geographical location name - rather, Britannia if we go by its original true name. The actual first known official origin of *Great Britain* is in the 1400s - long after 1066 you'll note, when a scottish and english monarchy marriage happened :) heres the quote; "The term Great Britain was first used officially in 1474, in the instrument drawing up the proposal for a marriage between Cecily the daughter of Edward IV of England, and James the son of James III of Scotland, which described it as "this Nobill Isle, callit Gret Britanee"."
@Sarge084 Жыл бұрын
In this case 'great' is a synonym for large or big. Great Britain is the larger of the British Isles. The use of great can be found in place names in England, such as Great Witley and Little Witley near my home town, and the Rissington's and Barrington's in Gloucestershire.

@ProckerDark Жыл бұрын
Why Scotland doesn't have a developed port?
@GusMac6129 Жыл бұрын
@@ProckerDark Scotland’s strategic ports owned by offshore private equity groups we’ve seen minimal investment in new port infrastructure, and high port charges - in turn penalizing Scottish trade. The transfer by successive Westminster governments of regulatory power to private ports has made them unaccountable to users and the public. Scotland’s major estuaries have not had a new port built since the 1970’s; contrast this with most other nations where new port capacity is considered vital for economic growth. No other nation has neglected its major seaports as the UK has done, and the consequence can be seen in the ever worsening trade deficit, with the UK as a whole importing almost twice as much as it exports. Scotland, fortunately, is the opposite of this with a positive trade balance helped by immense natural resources and high volume export goods such as whisky which is shipped to almost every country in the world. With independence, Scotland’s trade performance will be even better with improved ports infrastructure, lower port and transport costs, improved international connections and better regulation.

But if you see anyone from England asked about anything back home, they will almost never correct it to "Britain". This is why the English also mistakenly use the Union flag, instead of the English George Cross. Because North Sea gas taxes, licence fees etc is only less than 1% of UK GDP and is put towards funding Scottish government budget. Post indy you’d still get the same amount, but lost additional funding such as military and social care which isn’t funded by Scotland which would be an additional 20% to SNP budget. The divorce bill would be around 8% UK debt which would put Scotland in £220billion worth of debt. Combined with the additional funding you’d lose, on top of having to pay for a military (or go neutral) you’d be 500billion in debt within 10 years. That’s not the worst case scenario but in terms of additional cost to scotland. Tax rises, budget cuts and mass borrowing would be likely. The way he says it is quicker for obvious reasons.

The licences are already given meaning the firm owns the oil or gas they bring up for up to a decade. It will take years for Scotland to be fully independent, nevermind focussing on building its own rigs. If the UK thought it was financially viable then they would, so i dont see why Scotland would. Basing independence on an oil field that's running out in 30 years, unless we slow down the site licences, isn't the smartest of ideas imo. This is likely why twice as many oil fields are running out than NSTA are giving licences. Not to mention the country is trying to be net-zero anyway.
