Excellent work ... Coleman should pay your for your efforts on this one! Really made clear a lot of the twaddle that's out there and my enjoyment of my coleman stove vs lugging gas bottles about is complete! The only difference is I use Aspen4 fuel which makes the 424 an utter dream... Once again... cheers chap

Wow. Your stove looks so new and pretty. I remember when mine looked like that. I don’t even know where the dents came from in my stove, nor the rust. LOL! Still works perfectly, though. I happen to use a regular wooden match (1-3/4”). Once you’ve pressurized the tank and turned the valve lever up, you put the lit to the burner (with your hand to the side of the burner, not above it), then open the valve a couple turns and it should light safely. It’s riskier and I could get burned, but I never have. LOVE these stoves! VERY, VERY hot. I brought 8 cups of water to boil in a coffee percolator in 6 minutes!

Thanks! You saved my hair! I inherited one of these stoves from my late mother-in-law who passed not to long ago. I love coleman and vintage items for camping and read about how unleaded gas could be used. I never used a pressurized canister before so I watched this video. Thanks a lot! I will now get some coleman fuel and watch it once more before attempting.my first try out. There were loads of things I might have missed. I'm sure my wife would not want another fire in the garage!

It's not correct. The correct way is to keep the tank horizontal with the filler opening facing you, not the sky. This is how it's supposed to be filled with the bevelled funnel.

I love my coleman stoves! Nice instructional video. All of mine are the more vintage models with the older style fuel tank. With the filler port exposed on the left side top. The closest one to yours that I have is a 425e... But it's basically the same thing. (Except coleman fuel only). I only run coleman anyway. As far as versatility, I keep one of those propane adapters around. Century makes it I think. I like the coleman fuel better, but in an emergency it's nice to have the option. It's just a tube that slides into the stove in place of the generator and has a 1lb propane regulator on the outside of the stove housing.

my dad handed all his Coleman stuff down to me. he has a really old Coleman lantern that has a pretty cool story. he was fishing with his uncle and the lantern fell in the lake, he thought it was gone for good. he was fishing the same spot a couple years later and fished up the lantern. he let it dry out and replaced the filament i guess and it worked, and it still works today. i thought that was pretty amazing.

Thanks for the video!! Just for info, you did light the second burner. It was easier for us to see, it's just the flame was so perfect and blue it was invisible to you.... She lights up like a champ. These stoves are so incredibly awesome!! Love my original, bought two more, near mint condition. I couldn't believe that I found one just like yours in Walmart on sale, new for 40 bucks!! What also makes these stove so awesome, is the fact there might be some very regulated cooking you may want to perform... these stove make for good precision cooking!!! Everything about them is so darn cool!! An item one could easily find himself hording... where they say.. How did I end up with 13 Coleman 424 duel burner camp stoves!!! Or his wife says... "Just what in the heck do you intend on doing with all those dang stoves?? and where do you intend on keeping them???!!!" just kidding! :)

I got a Coleman stove at like 14 I still have it the fuel is from the 70's and it still works,.... Blue flame. Its a Coleman stove model 413 G made in 10 73. The gas fill is on top on the left hand side on the 413 G. Other than the gas cap they look the same. It's a great and dependable design. Mine has the lighting direction's on the inside back. It has a L shaped lighting lever that smooths out the flame.

You are confused. This is a stove not a lantern. The starter wire does not clean the generator, thats on a lantern. This opens a hole high in the tube that allows both fuel and pressuredized air to enter the generator so that it will burn. After the generator is heated it is not necessary to have this opened any longer. Fuel and air will mix in the air carb. It does not clean anything. Thats what happens in a lantern. If you take apart the stove you will see what I am referring to. Happy camping.

What is the secondary fuel one can use with this stove. As for "dirty fuels" you can disassemble the generator and clean the spring and cleaning needle rod and needle with a towel soaked in a small amount of acetone. Take care in cleaning the needle move your cleaning cloth over the needle away from the rod where the needle is crimped on. Wipe down the support spring as well and don't forget to clean the inside of the generator tube. You can use a nylon tubular brush or if you are one that uses an AR15 you will hopefully have access to the "pipe cleaners" used for cleaning the gas tube. They do a good job folded over about 2 inches from the end, soaked in a solvent and inserted into generator tube and spinning it around to scrub out the tube. Dry all parts and reassemble and your all ready to go. Don't leave the generator dirty when you know you have used crappy fuels, do it as soon as you get back home from your camping trip.

Thanks for your comment. I hv a vintage 425F and a friend has put unleaded gasoline in it. I have not lit it for the first time but its going camping with me this weekend. +InteliGear so what I want to know is when turning off the stove I heard something about turning the lighting lever either up or down I can't remember and allowing it to burn leftover fuel out of the generator so when I'm turning off the stove what is the exact procedure what do 8 do with the lighting lever thanks
@rgknowlton1
@rgknowlton1 8 жыл бұрын
Bob--It doesn't matter what position the lighting lever is in after you close the main shutoff valve because all fuel/air flow is cut off after closing the main shutoff valve. The lighting lever is a choke, of sorts, and controls the fuel/air mixture leaving the tank, running through the main shutoff valve, and into the generator. To shut down the stove, just close the main shutoff valve. Any remaining fuel vapor in the generator will continue to burn and even if it can no longer support a flame, the remaining vapor in the generator will slowly bleed off.

I haven't taken the time to look through all the comments but ! REPLACE OLD FUEL WHEN UNUSED FOR MORE THAN A FEW MONTHS ! I just recently had big problems with yellow flames and popping of the flame even extinguishing itself. After completely refreshing the fuel (automobile gas 95 octain) it's working perfectly ! Emptying the tank is not that easy as about a 3rd of the fuel remains in it when you try to tip it out. I used a plastic bottle with a small tube inserted in the cap to act as a suction pump to get ALL the fuel out.

Hi from Australia. I've had one of these Coleman's for around 20 years & you have still managed to impart some great tips. I only wish I'd knew about 1/2 the stuff you're advising when I first kicked off. Oh well. Such is life eh? It's great that this stove can use unleaded. However the Coleman fuel doesn't blacken pots nearly as much with it's carbon output as does the unleaded petrol. Just a thought for others to way up. Great stove & a really good review and instructional video. Thanks again mate.

Bill Blinky You shouldnt have any blackening of your pots. It sounds to me like oyu have the thing turned up to high. If its high you need to ensure there is plenty of pressure for it to burn cleanly. Do not put the pots on when the flame has just started and the generator has not had a chance to heat up yet. You will know its heated up properly when the flame turns from yellow to blue. With a blue flame there will no blackening on your pots at all. Ive used mine with 95 grade unleaded in the last house I was in. It was a rental house and I had 4 months without the normal gas range working, so I used my Coleman every single day inside the house. I just sat it on top of the normal cooker and kept the extractor on to remove the fumes from the house.

@InteliGear
@InteliGear 10 жыл бұрын
MrB1zzle As far as I know Coleman white gas stoves all operate off the same principles. The only differences would be some generators are designed to use different fuels while others can only use one type. I have heard of people using gasoline in regular stoves meant only for white gas. The drawback is the generator will burnout / fail quicker or so I've heard. I owned an exponent stove that was dual fuel and had a separate generator for use with Kerosene. I default back to the manufacturers suggestions when in doubt. Hope that helps. Be Well Friend... InteliGear.

Often, spiders or other critters will build nests in the manifold. I ran a pipe cleaner through one I bough at a yard sale, and mud dauber wasps had completely plugged the manifold. Sometimes a blast of compressed air will clean it, but the pipe cleaner works better.

@danburch9989
@danburch9989 8 жыл бұрын
+Jireh Climaco It makes the fuel/air ratio richer. Cold fuel doesn't burn as easily. When the generator is warmed up, the lighting lever is turned downward to lean out the fuel/air mixture. It's like a choke lever in a carburetor.
@COIcultist
@COIcultist 3 жыл бұрын
@@danburch9989 I always thought it was the opposite way round and that in the upper position you are taking vapour from the top of the tank. Hence, after you switch to neat fuel once the vaporiser has reached temperature you have to re pressure because using vapour robbed the tank of pressure faster than taking neat fuel does.

Good Video, thank you. I followed the instructions, basically the same as you showed, but after one or two successes, all I could get was some yellow flame and not the rushing sound and blue flame we love. Coleman is sending me a new part, but it was embarrassing on this weekend's camping trip when my friend propane Colemans all worked like a charm, and I was left fiddling and pumping mine to little avail. When I pump, the lever only goes in about 2/3 of the way, and I have to take my thumb off the air hole to get it close enough to screw it closed. Is that what I should expect? Thanks in advance for any advice.
@InteliGear
@InteliGear 10 жыл бұрын
Warren Leiden It sounds like the pump shaft may be bent slightly or needs to be lubricated. If the tank can't be fully pressurized this can lead to yellow flame. A dirty generator or old fuel can also lead to yellow flame. True it takes more work than your buddies propane models but You don't get the same satisfaction from turning a few knobs and pressing an electric start button. :-) After all isn't part of the fun of camping roughing it? Also remember that your stove is more versatile, can use different fuels and can operate in colder and harsher conditions than a propane stove. In the future do yourself a favor and pull out your stove before that next camping trip. Oil the pump, flush out the tank with a little new fuel ( remember that you should never put it up for long term storage with fuel in the tank) and fill it up with clean new fuel. Pressurize the tank, check it for leaks then fire that pup up! This way if you find a problem you can fix it before the trip. I would also carry a fix it kit with me on the trip containing the different size wrenches needed for replacing the generator and valve assemblies, A small oil bottle to lube the pump, Fire paste, A spare pump and generator and some spare o-rings for the valve assemblies. If you have this kit you can fix any common problem you may encounter in the field. The truth is you will most likely not need the kit if you do some preventative maintenance before hand. Hope it helps and your next adventure is awesome. P.S. with practice you will be operating your stove like a pro. Be Well Friend... InteliGear.

I was put on hold and then told that they were sending me a new part. I think the problem is that I'm not getting pressure. After I saw your video, I pumped up the tank and then slowly unscrewed the tank tap to release the pressure - but there really wasn't any pressure to release. My stove is brand new, so I don't know how it ought to feel, but as I said above, when I pump, I can only push it about 2/3 of the way in, and I have to take my thumb off the pump hole just to get it close enough so that I can screw the pump closed. I feel like I'm releasing the pressure as soon as I take my thumb off, but maybe the pump is faulty, and I'm not actually creating pressure. Sigh. It's very frustrating and too late to return it. I'll try lubricating the pump, but I'm surprised it would be necessary on a brand new stove. BTW, how do you drain the fuel from the tank? The fuel hole has a cylinder on the inside that appears to prevent emptying it out that way. Am I missing something? Thank you for your generous attention.

Warren Leiden You won't get all the fuel out I usually just give it a good shake. Thats why I recommend using a little new fuel to rinse out the tank at the beginning of each camping season. If you remove the generator and open the valve you can turn it upside down to remove more but I never have found it necessary. Also if it turns out to be the pump they can be purchased at Walmart. Good Luck with it. InteliGear.

Great thorough information. Thanks. I was told unleaded gas would blow up the stove. So, that's not true?

+nzinga zindua Not true; won't explode unless intentionally put under pressure and ignited with the sole purpose of causing an explosion. The fuel valve regulates that pressure to a low, non-explosive level. Coleman fuel and unleaded gasoline are very similar - both liquid and flammable. Coleman fuel is probably gasoline without the additives and octane boosters needed for automotive fuel.

+nzinga zindua normal unleaded is perfectly fine I've never used anything else. It is true though that it blocks the generator however this is easily remeded by adding normal fuel detergent (redex or similar).

I had a three burner back in the 90's. For what reason I don't know it started shooting flames about 3' high. We closed the lid and sides and flames were still coming out the cracks. Does any one know why this happened and what I can do to prevent it? I just purchased a used two burner.

not enough pressure in the tank when lighting so liquid fuel pooled up in the burner.

What’s the point? Most people (like me) I believe they chose a liquid fuel stove as will not be dependent on LPG. Unleaded petrol (gasoline) you can get anywhere.

I enjoy your videos on gear, I really do. Haven't seen anything new in a while. It's too bad you've stopped posting. First comment on your videos though... My dad had this stove 30+ years ago, we went camping many times and I remembered it being a pain back then, just as it was for you (though I rememberd he used to take his thumb off the hole on the upstroke when pumping the chamber, maybe to draw the air in, who knows right???). After a few years he upgraged to the propane version, but if anything what I learned / rehashed from this video was that this stove sucked compared to the propane version. Seriously too much work, in fact I would say to anyone why the hell would you buy something like this today??? The stove itself is twice as thick, filling the tank, presurizing the tank, all the ins and outs to go through to light it and keep the damn thing stable, re-pump it now and then. Seriously throw this thing in the garbadge and upgrade to the propane model which litterally is like screw the propane bulb in, turn it on and light you fire and ready to cook, done deal... I know you're all about "rough man" camping gear and stuff, but seriously I remembered this hunk of junk 30+ years ago and while it worked and cooked us many baked beens and othe crap its certainly not what i would advocate or recomend to buy, in fact I'm surprized you can even buy this thing anymore. I still go camping and maybe I'm a bit civilized, but i bring the 5 gal tank, have a manifold and bleed it off to the still 20 year+ old colman propane stove which my dad later handed down to me as well and it still works great and has never failed.

Great video although I must say that the left hand burner valve doesn't need to be open very much - You're not opening a can of corned beef - A can of fuel over here in Australia is $26.50 US

swingmanic Now $34. Guess I'll be using high octane petrol if I ever get my hands on this. These stoves are very rare to find both new & used in Oz. Looking at the online catalogs & visiting shops, it seems portable propane/butane stoves are far more popular for car campers. I'm also seeing more of those butane cartridge stoves, the same tabletop ones they use in Korean restaurants.

The funnel is still designed for the old tanks which has the fill cap on the left hand side. I don't like the new tanks. They did the tanks this way because some idiots were re-filling them up while they were on.

We have had a Coleman 424 burner for as long as I can remember (at least 20+ years). Never used anything other than Euro95. Besides replacing the gaskets of the pressure pump it still operates perfectly. On several forums users suggest white spirit/white gas is basically (not exactly) the same thing as Coleman fuel. By the way, a new generator for a 424 sells for €17,50 (about 10-12 Pounds). Definitely not worth using Coleman fuel then.

I live in the UK, and have had my stove for about 15 years, bought it from argos. This is a dual fuel stove which means you can use unleaded petrol. I've never used coleman fuel, although a friend did try parafin through it.

I appreciate that it is dual fuel but I understood that petrol was not so clean as Coleman fuel. Is that true? I use Coleman fuel in my Svea 123R and it burns very clean.
