New Year, New Ethiopia video, glad to see all is right in the world. The reason Switzerland doesn't surrender is because they can get a national spirit that makes their surrender limit 0%, and each tile is worth a very small amount of war score. This makes it so you have to capture every tile to capitulate them, unless you build a collab government to reduce their surrender limit.

Another thing that few people bring up when discussing bad paths is the fact that the longevity is all screwed up. A WW2 simulator like HOI4 is awful with "slow start" countries that require you to go down the focus tree to fix your nation's issues because by the time it's all fixed, the war is over and you won't have any enemies left to fight. Ethiopia is the worst because even without talking about the fascist path, you barely even actually "get" anything. You just fix issues. Oh, so you no longer have negative debuffs? Pretty much every single other minor country gets that for FREE at the beginning of the game. The only country that averts this is Italy, because the tree is so massive you actually have to choose what you have to leave behind in order to improve your situation. So you could have a strong airforce and industry, but your political scene, navy and ground army would suffer because you're not focusing on reforming them. HOI4, out of all Paradox games, is just begging for actual DLC extensions that add post-war game content. Maybe a bigger tech tree, smaller peace deals that force you to fight larger country multiple times to annex it (like in EU4), and formable nations with their own focus trees, so you actually have something to look forward to after winning a single war.

I think you should try out EU4, it isnt THAT complicated and it has so many more things that can go wrong, in addition to losing wars, having no manpower, weaker troops and everybody around you hating that you exist, you also have bankruptcy, loans, breaking alliances, the holy roman empire where if you attack a nation literally everyone will try to kill you, sailors in addition to manpower, a feature that limits the amount of land you can actually control, rebels, rebels, rebels and rebels as well as bad events, bad RNG when fighting wars, bad RNG when it comes to your leaders, waay too many peacedeals where the nation you want to annex survives with one province and an overcomplicated trade system. Its super fun!

Tbqh i don't think allowdiplo in that situation is cheating. The spirit of the focus is that you're fighting for independence and to reclaim all your land. That republican government which only controlled venice would probably be more willing to let you have independence than the italian social republic and did not control your land, therefore it makes no sense that you would attack them and not the other one.
