I would recommend tricky brains, love on delivery and fight back to school. I think these are easier for Western viewers to understand. Some movies might need a basic understanding of the culture, mythology etc. Ps. Hong Kong's English subtitles in the 80/90 were famous for its accuracy 😂.

Happy to see you guys did this reaction video! Just some explanations for the movies (I'm from Hong Kong) The wife looks totally different when she heard Leo will offer her money if she doesn't kill herself, that's a sense of humor, with a message like " Ya, you killed my husband, but I love money more than my husband" Why did the wife wear red shirt before jumping? Because in Chinese culture, most of the time "Red" represents good things, BUT when it comes to things about ghost, people believe red clothes represents the great hatred which will make the ghost very powerful. That's why Leo tried his best to prevent the wife from dying.

YEESSSS! Thanks so much for being the first on KZbin to react to this!! This is one of my favourite Stephen Chow movies growing up! Out of the Dark was considered to be what the Cable guy was to Jim Carrey. This movie almost ruined Chow’s career because it did so poorly at the box office but developed a cult fallowing. Great job guys, keep it up! Ps. You should do squid game before the hype dies down Other Stephen Chow recommendations: The mermaid A Chinese odyssey

Glad that you guys like it. One of my favorite Steven Chow’s movies. A few fun random fun facts. 1) It is a low budget movie as no major film maker then thinks Steven can pull of off Comedy with ghosty theme in 1995 (note: Scary Movie is from 2000) 2) It was shot at a new Public housing block expecting residence to move in. This type of high density high raising public housing is extremely common in HK. They even comes in standard layout exactly like that in groups called “Estates” Long corridor, back staircases that no one uses except for smoking (or other dodgy business), shutter door of each units are still very relevant today. 3) These “guards” would be real estate mangers. There are usually 2 working real estate managers anytime in each building to gate keep the main building entrance. Patrolling each floor to make sure no non residence hanging around the area (like the dope) is part of their job too. 4) the introduction of this movie set at a pace as if it were a stage play. All main characters were introduced in the first couple minutes 5) it is not unreal for people to throw thing down like this. There were real life cases where people actually throw down a tv due to anger/ mental illness in these estates 6) At the closing scene, Steven character's self sacrifice is referred to an well known Buddist motto : “If I don't go to hell (to save life), who else will?” 7) Not surprising, this movie didn't do well in box office at 1995 compare to other Steven’s Comedies due to its randomness and ghosty theme. But it continues to become popular and becomes a cult HK movie of that era

Still living in one of these estates myself. Yup there are quite a lot of security guards, and they are rightfully needed. The estates are like the ghetto of the city, designated for low income families. But also thanks to the amount of security guards, these shitholes are very livable.

From Beijing With Love (Chinese: 國產凌凌漆) is a 1994 Hong Kong spy comedy film directed by Stephen Chow and Lee Lik-chi. The film is a very direct spoof of the James Bond films.

It’s interesting to see how the world has opened up . Growing up in Australia however having parents influence with Hk cinema - and growing up with chow films . Goddamn classic
@chris2favip3 жыл бұрын
Just a quick share from me: This film’s focus was more about the folktales, such as why that lady on the roof wear the red dress before jumping. I felt that this movie was also a tribute to HK gore/ horror films such as the HK Zombies, which also a very unique genre. Personally I would prefer his version of “journey of the west” as it is more like a adult version fairytales. This is first film he directed without without him playing any roles. Also the 2nd “King of comedy”. But the 1st one was also a hidden gem to the western world. A small hint was that it was largely based on his career or events he encountered in his career. And a lot of Easter eggs as always in his films. Finally love see more westerners appreciate his works. P.S. a martial arts movie to recommend is Dragon or Wu Xia, different name for the same Donnie Yen movie.

Please do Stephen Chow's FROM BEIJING WITH LOVE next. His James Bond spoof (and also since the new Bond film is out). This is one of his best, and way better than OUT OF THE DARK, IMO. The jokes are a lot more accessible to an international audience, and there is a nice balance of humour and heartfelt moments in this film. Stephen Chow is the King of Nonsensical Comedy! (Oh, and 1 pound = 10 Hong Kong Dollars FYI, so just divide by 10).

Thanks for reacting to this! A childhood classic, still so good this day. The film is made in 1995, right before HK's hand over in 1997. It might echoed some public sentiment at that time. Can be totally subjective view though.

As a HongKonger, Stephen Chow movie is a part of our culture. We kept on watching his movie (but his production after Kung Fu Hustle is not good, since he shifted his production to China. Thus, after that the movies are not so Hong Kong Style). I think the most funny movie are Hail the Judge (九品芝麻官), Flirting Scholar (唐伯虎點秋香), and The God of Cookery (食神). Don't know there are English subtitle version or not. And I want to know how foreigners react to them.

Out of the Dark is one of the underrated Stephen Chow movies. They actually did a lot of Hollywood parodies in Stephen Chow movies. For example in this movie he is wearing sunglasses wearing trench coat carrying a flower pot with a short haired girl, just like Jean Reno and Natalie Portman's Leon 1994 movie. Another one I can think of is Sixty Million Dollar Man's Pulp Fiction parody where they did the Twist dancing.

Noticing that you mentioned the parallel to British humour and well it is a Hong Kong movie that was during a time when the UK was still control of it. Also, there are some of the local folklore that may have been lost on anyone not familiar with Chinese superstition. The Ox Tears being able give you ability see the dead is because the Chinese version of grim reapers said to ferry the dead to the afterlife has a ox head. Hence any kind of product from cows such as tears or milk (hence the milk chocolate in Maltesers) are used to fight off the ghosts. Lily’s are also flowers given at funerals so

Many Hong Kong culture references in this film and probably will make foreigners felt very random when watching it. The scene that Leo asked if there’s any horse racing today, and the guy took out a newspaper for Leo, it’s because when there’s a horse racing in Hong Kong, the mid-aged men who interested in racing gambling mostly will buy the newspaper of horse racing (for the racing program & some tips for gambling). Quite a few jokes are lost in translation (felt sad about it). Anyway, Out of the Dark is one of my favorite of Chow’s movies, a classic one.

There was a movie by Stephen Chow which has a part where the characters operated based on this theory. Since “ghosts” are previously human, they should be scared of the same things when they were alive. The movie 回魂夜 was about ghost-busting Stephen chow style 😂 I think the movie name in English is Out of the Dark.

Chinese folklore believed that if a person suicide wearing red clothes, will become a spirit or vengeance 😬
@wavingdragon3 жыл бұрын
I think this belief may have 2 origins. People tend to think that someone may become a vicious ghost after death if they has a very tragic death and their body is totally covered in blood, or if a bride or groom dies on their wedding day as Chinese wedding outfits are mostly red. Such tragic deaths were gradually generalized that anyone dies in a red outfit is gonna become a vicious ghost.

My favorites are Flirting Scholar, The Mad Monk, Love on Delivery, All for the Winner. Flirting Scholar is full of Cantonese wordplays I'm not sure how much you can get from it. Come to think of it, I think you might love A Chinese Odyssey Part One - Pandora's Box, and A Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Two Cinderella. They are parodies of Journey to the West. Very relatable to all cultures I believe, and lots of martial arts actions mixed with comedies. In fact as far as I can remember I think A Chinese Odyssey was the first of its kind to depict Son Wu Kong as rebellious defiant hero which the Heaven is the stuck up asshole, rather than savage ruffian brat from its original novel.
