The thing about Stephen Chow is that he started off auditioning to be an actor but at that time he was deemed too short (the standard at that time was Chow Yun Fat). So he instead build his own production company and create movies where he can star, direct and write. Truly an amazing man.

For information about how this screen play came up, This story was intended to talk about after year 2000, the burst of IT economic bubble. Many professionals were out of their jobs, n looked for other occupations, n often were unemployed or had to work in low paid jobs. People were depressed n could not do what they could do well , express their talents n potential in what they were good at. This economic downturns, financial crisis inspired chow to write this script. As the Kung fu was largely be seen as useless nowadays jobs requirements. No matter how much effort u had put in before, n how good was u, the economy or the reality didn't need u anymore. Somehow, hong kong lion rock spirit that Chow often represents, which means the flexibility of hong kong people mind, that always adapt to change when facing difficulties. The protagonists of shaolin football squad was chow's far cry of motivating hong kong people to cheer up n be flexible , alter what they were good at to face the challenges in the early 21st century economy.

Happy to see some reaction video to the Cantonese version! As a Hong Konger, I've watched this movie for so many times and still enjoy it! But sadly, the Eng sub cannot fully translate the meaning from the original one. For example, Chow told that "fart boy" to learn Shaolin instead, but actually he told him never try to insult Shaolin. There is many different kind of Praying Mantis Style, depends on the sect. Shaolin has Praying Mantis Style too, so that didn't make sense to tell him " you should learn Shaolin instead" I really really recommand you guys to watch "Out Of The Dark" which is also Stephen Chow's movie. There is many references from "Léon" in that movie, super cool! I like your video very much! Keep up the good work!!^^

I was an early 90s kid, but Kung Fu Hustle was pretty big in the US among my age group, and everyone at school new about it at the time. Shaolin Soccer was also somewhat known. Not to the extent of Hustle, and most people hadn't heard of it, but a surprising number of people did. I also had a bootleg VHS copy which I shared with all my friends who didn't. A lot of movies resonate differently with different people, and you can only guess what movies your friends will like, love, or forget. Shaolin Soccer, though, spread like wildfire through anyone who saw it. (disclaimer: pre-social media wildfire is different than post-social media wildfire :v)

stephen chow has the highest seriousness and demand in directing the film that they equated him as a dictator on set, it's either his way or the highway. the big brother steel head, had his head smashed with prop bottles so many times that at one point he really fainted when the prop was smashed in a wrong angle on his head. and stephen chow wanted to do a few more retakes after he regained consciousness, luckily the workers, having developed an empathy for the guy, told stephen that they ran out of prop bottles, which actually there were a few more left. the girl zhao wei, is a already a prominent actress when starring in the film, stephen had her saying the line "my name is ah mei" in so many retakes (almost 30 to 50 retakes) that it finally broke her and made her cried on the set. no to mentioned the egg scene, where the guy ate dozen of eggs for the retake till he had a phobia for egg.

Most of the movies in Stephen Chow were released in the 90s of the last century. Because of the low per capita income of the Chinese mainland during that period, most people knew Stephen Chow through pirated CD. Nowadays, people are willing to go to the cinema to watch Stephen Chow's new film, although the quality of the film has declined, people are happy to pay for the good time of childhood. Thanks to Stephen Chow.

I remember watching this years ago with my brother, and I'm sure at the end there was a part where the subtitles said "Star player marries own goalie" or something similar.

"A Shaolin master kicked one of our cans to the stratosphere and straight down to Earth, penetrated a wall, and the can still held its shape. Because we value our customers' drink. Drink San Miguel Gold Beer. Only we can serve you beers that are indestructible." They should advertise the beer this way from now on.
