Hey Gang. Still waiting on this electrician to come out so we figured we'd tackle a small task for these homeowners that's gonna save them headaches in the future. This is a common problem we've seen throughout the years and we have this simple and in-expensive fix for ya! Thanks for watching and we'll see ya in the next one!

Hey gang! Couple of comments I have: 1) I filled the pipe completely with concrete because ground water was seeping into it and I wanted to stop this from happening. I didn't want all that stagnant water sitting under our new kitchen. The water table here is very high. No basements and swimming pools will float out of the ground if you're not careful 😳 2) On the electric conduit repair, we've had this exact problem before on other houses. It's extremely common here for that 2" pipe to completely rust thru at ground level. I'm sure there are 1000s of others like this around here. I've had the utility company come out before and they basically said it's not a problem (they don't have the time/resources to fix all of them) and if we're worried about it to pour some concrete around it. In the end, this concrete repair is much much safer than it was before.

When I was going to college I did flat roofing. We also filled the tires with styrofoam because you will get nails in the tires every single day. We never had a single flat tire ever. I have never liked how they sell people air-filled tires. There's no reason to use air.

I got a story better than that, I had a 13 x 16’ building whose foundation had sagged about 8” to one side, I decided to jack it up and found out that not only the main service ran under the building but also the galvanized had completely dissentegrated underground, the buildings slab was actually resting on the service. Since main power disconnect was on the other side of the building so I shut the power down and just reran the service to the house with brand new schedule 80 PVC, and grounded the building on one side and the house on the other side. Then I jacked up the whole building slid some vapor barrier underneath and pack a couple thousand pounds of sand, and lowered it back to level. Save myself about 25,000 dollars. Building is still level after almost two decades.

I did concrete work for 13 years before switching to a different trade. Those wheelbarrows with the 2 front wheels should only be used on a hard flat surface. If you take them off road they are too hard to balance with a heavy load and will blow your lower back out when you go to correct the imbalance. One of the first things I do it every house I move into or buy is call 811 and have the utilities marked. Then I draw a diagram and take pictures that go in a folder on my computer. By measuring off of things like a fence gate that's not going to move or driveway corner or curb cut out to where the corners are I will have a very good idea of where all of the lines run if I ever need to dig something up. If I'm even remotely in the area where they are I will have them remarked just to be safe but that way I know where they're at for little one-off projects

Have you figured out why that rusted/rotted off? if you look below the meter it looks like the cable TV company grounded to that galvanized pipe, this could cause electrolysis which would cause the issue. I an a retired Telephone Lineman, when I first started in 1973, Okanagan Telephone in Vernon BC Canada did not use stain insulators on their guy wires, this would cause electrolysis to rot off the anchors for the guy wires, when you pulled out the anchor bar it would be rusted off as sharp as a needle. Lesson, only ground to a proper ground rod. It used to be common in the 70's to ground inside a house to the water pipes, bad idea same issue. Remember though in the 50's they wire houses with no ground, only a 2 wire outlet, thankfully the codes have changed and gotten better so fewer issues.

So, how is that "Duct tape" which is not good for most things especially outdoor moisture areas, supposed to keep the sharp edges you mentioned of the galvanized conduit from nicking the wires inside? Also, concrete is porous and water will work it's way through and you did not slope it so water would run off. Not a good solution to the problem. One more thing, you said the underground vent pipe was sloped outside, ok why didn't you start inside and push the remaining water outside? Just curious.
@StudPack
@StudPack 3 жыл бұрын
The duct tape is there for other reasons 1) to realign the conduit and 2) to keep concrete out of the conduit. It’s purpose wasn’t to protect the conductors from sharp edges. The concrete basically immobilizes the conduit to keep those edges from abrading the insulation. Could have dug deeper and cut off the 90 outside, let water drain, etc. lots of ways to do that one 👍

I note that the coaxial cable has a ground wire connected to the steel pipe - Not sure what code says, but as the conduit is rusted off, that ground probably should be moved to the ground wires leaving the house, or directly to a ground rod. I note other comments about having the conduit fixed properly (or replaced with PVC if code permits) I am inclined to agree with those comments.. Also, my initials thought was that the 3" PVC should have had a weep hole, but if ground water is really high, that might not have been an option. Suppose filling with concrete end to end eliminates any concerns about water in the pipe :)

As an electrician I must say do not concrete your conduit to the house and up to a meter enclosure. There are actual pipe repairs, split sleeves, that are made to fix broken conduit. When transitioning to a home you should have a slip sleeve that allows the ground and house to shift/settle differently to avoid broken pipes; while this wasn’t always a thing it has become much more important with PVC conduit as PVC can fracture easier than RMC. Transitions especially moist ones can be issues with galvanized conduit/pipe, the mulch packed in tight to the pipe didn’t help things; I prefer sand or stone as they allow water to drain away. You don’t actually need conduit from a to b if you use a direct burial rated cable; you only need conduit going down, I want to say 12-18” below grade as protection in the transition to the vertical though I’d have to check NEC to make sure. You’re lucky that your utility replaces the drop to your house as our supplier as we I am the property owner is responsible for all wiring between the meter and pole connection or underground connection.

I thought steel and concrete were a bad mix unless the steel was completely enclosed in concrete and had a minimum covering as water that pooled on the concrete surface would get acidic and eat away the steel faster. Also I think part of why rebar is usually plain steel is because the rust layer creates a barrier preventing the acidic nature of the concrete from going to work on the fresh steel underneath. I know they have "preserved" a lot of battleships by pouring concrete on the deck with some pretty bad results over time.

Unfortunately the conduit has rusted away so you really are not encasing conduit, but are encasing bare wires. Additionally playing with a broken metal pipe like that involves great risk of shock. The sharp edges may have cut one of the cables resulting in the pipe become energized. By it appearance it would appear the service is near the end of its life, it would be better to call an electrician to repair it. The concrete is likely to settle or shift and wires may fail at an inconvenient time such as winter.

The Utilities should not have recommended that. You still have sharp edges from rust all over the conduit. Proper cheap fix is dig out to first conduit coupler then replace with PVC. I had one of those Jenn-Aire's in a condo. I didn't have a BBQ (no patio) so I thought this was a good idea grilling inside the home. The model I had didn't need an outside vent. It had electrostatic filters that had to be cleaned. Greasy mess. On grilling mode it would constantly pop. Needless to say it was junk.

SMH...as a former electrician for 30+ years this "repair" on the electrical service has me really concerned that is not safe. In my opinion it needed to be replaced, there are still sharp edges inside the pipe and YOU just put yourself on the hook if ANYTHING happens there, and it doesn't take much for a short to occur and possibly a fire. I would never take this kind of chance because I have seen things man ...bad things.

Local utility won’t repair it. BTDT. they don’t have time or resources to fix thousands of these. Sharp edges yes but now they’re stable and won’t move and cut the insulation plus the concrete encapsulates the wire. Much better than it was before 👍

And I work for an electric utility and he does not even call these things the correct name. You only have "phasing" on true 3-phase services. He only lost a "leg"....not a phase. But he says things with authority even when he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I have a lot of respect for this guy's creativity and effort he has put into the electric on other videos, but this repair on the line side of the meter was something I'm not a fan of. The sharp rusted metal still exists, and any settling the ground can continue to do over time, especially with the concrete, can cause more issues. Often with that age and deterioration there might be other issues necessitating a replacement of the base itself. I've seen the hots ground out and burn through everything from being pulled down over time. Different jurisdictions though, if his PoCo is too lazy or doesn't care but yet they are responsible for dealing with it then he made the best of a bad situation. Here we would schedule a shutdown and remove the garbage rusted conduit, new PVC, new base, etc. If necessary whole new run.

I don't understand why you didn't cut that vent pipe back more so it would be out of the way of the garden. Couldn't you cap it off instead of messing with the concrete? On the electric pipe, I'm confused if the power company came and dug up your yard to run new lines, why didn't they replace the pipe while they were at it? Putting concrete around it seems like an amateur bandaid job and makes it more difficult to repair properly later. I had the same issue with my galvanized electric pipe several years back, which is behind a hedge. My power lines were ok, but I looked back there one day and noticed it was rusted and I could see the cables inside. I haggled with the electric distributor a little and they came and replaced the pipe with PVC for free.

As an electrician, I would replace the pipe, but the form works and you can do it yourself. I see no issue with it, for whatever my opinion is worth. It's just that as an electrician, I can call the utility and have them disconnect power without issue so that I could pull out the service conductors and reconnect, and it would take roughly the same amount of time, with no more broken pipe.

Why would you fill that vent so high with concrete? I'm imagining someone going to plant in that garden area and running into it. Wouldn't it have made more sense to block and only fill the down leg inside the house and then dig down to cut through the pipe vertically in the garden so water doesn't stand?

@@StudPack thanks for the response! I really enjoy the videos. I must respectfully disagree with the guy that told you no money to fix them. They are backed by the parent power company. I don't know if you've ever visited a power plant during a shutdown, but they have the $. They all hire nothing but union contractors and pay them per diem out the wazoo. Not to mention they can be held liable if it's determined there negligence is to blame in the event of an unfortunate situation. If y'all make $$ from it, more power to you. I wouldn't fault you for that. As the old man I once wired houses for used to say, "I'm in business to make money. " 🤣 But if you know someone that can't pay, I would call them on their bluff.

Single phase, but two hot legs. 240V center tapped. The center tap is neutral. You lost one of the hot legs, but think of phase as current, flowing from one hot to the other, inverting at 60 times a second. If you lose one of the hots, the current still flows from center point to a leg, but half the voltage between the two hot legs.

I would’ve pumped the water out of that vent line, and added 1/2 bag of concrete mix from inside, and 1/2 a bag from outside, to be absorbed by the remaining water in the line. And then cap off each side. Why spend the extra money. And your fix for the rotting galvanized pipe, is an accident waiting to happen. I would just call the utility company, and have them replace the entire run. They are 100 % responsible for that line.
