I am one of those Army 11B Scout Snipers with the 101st 1/502nd who was on the ground in the Battle of Baghdad that whole week and on April 7th 2003. This was very early in her USAF career. She went on to have a 24 year career where she made full colonel, was a wing commander and finished as an Air Force Academy instructor. Her husband was also an AFA graduate and also retired as an A-10 pilot and a full colonel. They have two children.

The A-10 on the modern Battlefield with enemies who have modern capabilities is very limited like the AC-130 but unlike the AC-130 there's only so much expansion you can do on such a small airframe wow the AC-130 is literally a cargo plane.

In relatively uncontested air space, absolutely! Replace all that Tripple-A with SAMs and shoulder-fired AA and you're probably going to start to not see pilots RTB in disturbing numbers. Remember, pilots cost $1m to $11m each to train over a couple to several years before they are deemed "ready". A-10, per the Rand study, estimated A-10 pilots at $6m each to train, on par with F-15 and F-16 pilots. Not cheap like the $1m per cargo plane pilot, but not as expensive as 5th gen pilots at $11m per. Ground troops need their support, but the pilots and Congress need to be assured they will survive the sortie with a high degree of reliability, or the fleet is going to get grounded 1/2 way through a conflict when you have 12 shot down in the first 160 hours of combat.

oh, they still do want to get rid of the A-10, dont be fooled about that, and, (from what i hear) they want to replace it with the F-35, lol, that HAS to be a joke, right? the A-10 was killing tanks on the battlefield LONG before the F-35 was just a concept in someones head...........and yeah, yeah, i get the argument, "but, the A-10 is old, we need something more modern" ok, I point you to the B-52, over 70 years of active service and STILL our only heavy strategic bomber, why? because there is nothing that can replace it and its capabilities, just like the A-10, there is nothing that can repalce it or its capabilities

I've never served in the military. But that feeling you get when you know, for a fact, that you saved a person's life, it's like a tidal wave of emotion. As a very young RAF Air Cadet i got the opportunity to sit in the A10 and learnt a lot about the aircraft and gun which is massive at RAF Lakenheath nearly 30 years ago and have always admired this amazing aircraft and really hope it stays flying bloody well done to all those pilots.

My Great Uncle was a tail gunner in a B-17 ( The “Wolf Shack”) during WW2. I’d ask every question I could think of about the B-17 and quickly I became obsessed with the plane. It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen… till I saw the A-10. There is just something unreal about the damage both plane could take and dish out. To this day I get almost emotional just seeing the two planes. They are almost mythical.

This was great and really appreciate her service to this great country of ours. In Vietnam we had a small group of ARMY pilots that saved our asses many times nicknamed "The 4 Aces." I was there from June 1966 to July 67 and they supported our Company when needed. They flew out of Tuy Hoa and Nha Trang most of the time. Great pilots and fearless when we were in trouble.God Bless Them!

So, as a fanboy of Col. Campbell (and a few other pilots) I've always said how much I respect her strength of character. As a USAF retiree (as an E-6) of 22 years of service, I will say that one thing you'll come away with after that time is the great amount of people you come into contact with. I would definitely recommend her book 'Flying in the Face of Fear" to anyone who wants to set the bar high for themselves. Having any pilot remember their Crew Chief's name, and having them say those names while that pilot is recounting their signature event on a public forum is even more telling of the character strength of that pilot. There aren't many pilots out there that will mention their maintainers while in the spotlight like that.

if it wasn't for her ground crew keeping that beautiful bird in good shape she might not have came back she also trusted her bird and its ability to get her home like its older sibling the P-47 "jug" as its called this is the jet engine version of it they didn't get they're name for being able to take that many rounds both planes in a experienced pilots control stick can and will do everything to bring them home and if they can't get the bird home they do everything they can to make a save ditch effort she knew her bird pretty well once her command told her what was wrong from what they could see she took that and kept going that bird needs to be in a retired or even better someone buy it and give her old girl back to her (if she wanted it) i would be proud to have my bird as my own plane and fly it so people know "this old girl got me home and it'll go where i want it to" thank you for your service Col.

I'm a former British Soldier and Iraq veteran. I suppose from her perspective she just pressed a button to made things blow up to save her comrades But also she was a killer for an illegal invasion force based upon blatant lies for conquest and theft Probably tore apart and or/burnt alive a few dozen conscript fathers and sons who were justly defending their country But that's just the start - Google "Depleted Uranium Iraq" and study closely the thousands of grotesquely disfigured babies born (the ones that survive) due to the *HIGHLY toxic* irradiated heavy metals used in A10 Warthog Gauss ammunition Publicly US and UK authorities claim the radiation levels are low - to obscure the fact it's the toxicity which has poisoned large areas of land Operation Iraq freedom? What freedom? Many older Iraqis wish for return of Saddam because nothing has improved. Iraq is a vassal state that the US steals its wealth whilst the people languish in poverty

I was in the Army from 1996 until 2005. Including one combat tour in 2004. My time training in fort Polk Louisiana and fort Irwin California had me supported by the A-10 Thunderbolt. And I tell you there is no feeling or sound that makes a soldiers on the ground smile like that of a 30 mm Canon erupting from an A-10 Thunderbolt Warthog. To this day it still my favorite fixed-wing aircraft!

After serving on a Air Assault team in Nam and having gone in hard on 2 occasions in a "slick" and surviving all I can say is ,,Semper Fi. There's a million combat stories out there like ours.

My grandpa rode the M60D into combat. Most of his sorties were on slick H models, but said he flew a few sorties with the early 7-tube rocket pods filled up with the flechette (APERS) rockets. I believe he was at Marble Mountain outside Da Nang if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure who was there 65-66 and 67-68.

@@Trve_Kvlt I was in military region 1 near the DMZ and Laos border. My primary assignment was @ Camp Eagle with the 2/17 Air Cav. from 70-72, but being a grunt I spent a great deal of time on different fire bases in the A-shu Valley. But I did pull quite a bit of door gunner duty as well when I was at Camp Eagle but I was primarily a ground pounder and spent most of my time in the valley and near the end of my 2nd tour , driving deuce & half's and 5 ton trucks in the same location. None of it was what you'd call fun except for the ride back to the world on a 707 Freedom Bird. For awhile there it was a day I thought I'd never see to be honest.

Ma'am, thank you! I was not involved in this, but I was on the ground in Tikrit. The A-10 is certainly one of my favorite aircraft. The only one that I appreciate more is the Apache flown by the Gentleman who pulled security for me while I conducted BDAR during a mission in dangerous territory. With all of my heart, thank you!

@Stephen Taylor I have a couple of arming tags that were pulled off of a couple mavericks right before my Dad's first sortie in theater along with a few other mementos he got for my brother and I. So we're you with the 511th? Not a lot of people remember the Vultures considering as soon as he brought the guys back from the desert he had his fini flight and change of command and then the squadron was stood down a few months later.

I remembered the fights we had in baghdad and north at the K2 Airfield. seeing any aviation asset was motivation for us on the ground. nothing is scarier to the enemy when you got an Abrams, Bradley, Kiowa warrior, Apache and A-10 all coming at you....Also, when we train for a downed pilot scenario, rest assured that the Cavalry will come....in the form of a huge TF. We got your six Ma'am. "Ready and Forward", "Rock of the Marne", "Speed and Power"!!!

i worked at denver international airport and knew the pilot who crash landed their plane, they were pilot for united at the time. they are at the 14 19 mark on the vid where she talked about three pilots before her that landed an a 10 with no hydraulics. they shared with me that crash landing and it is an absolute miracle they survived it.

About as iconic as a 12ga being loaded on a front porch, the sound of an A10 doing an attack run is just as American. I have never been on the front line, yet even still the "brrrrrrrrrrrrt" of a warthog still brings me comfort. When warthog goes brrrrrrrrrrrrt American lives get saved
