I give these guys and are past service men & women so much props! I could never handle such situation or have the patients for it. The first time I experience a sniper battle is playing the video game "Metal Gear Solid 3" back in 2004. There is a boss battle with The End who is a grandmaster sniper in the game. The terrain is huge and he camouflaged so well. When I first fought him, I had a lot of help thanks to Kojima making it easier for players who don't have the patients to deal with him. The 3rd time I fought him, I decided to fight like a real sniper battle and oh man, was it really darn hard to find him. Without using the konami code, killing or capturing his parrot, the directional microphone, and thermal goggles, it would literally take hours or days to kill him as you rely on his footsteps and lens flare to give away his position. For everyone that made it to sniping class and graduation, thank you very much!

Some of these scenes show a device attached to their rifles above their scopes. That is an AN/PSQ-23 laser rangefinger, made by L3/Insight Technologies. This has a rangefinder with a range of 6 kilometers (way beyond effective range of sniper rifles) and includes a digital magnetic compass which also shows elevation in addition to azimuth. I went through a similar course in Security Forces training. I grew up on a farm shooting and training in marksmanship since I was 6 years old, and I'm still a dead shot. When I came into the military, I scored so well on the range that got expert marksman with multiple weapons. Not just marksman, but Expert marksman. My brothers all had similar training at home, and the Marine Corps recognized just how good of a shot that my oldest brother was. They offered him a 6 year job, to be a Marine Corps Sniper Trainer at Quantico for his entire 6 years. He never stepped foot in Vietnam. But every sniper he trained went to Vietnam, and a few to Cambodia. My next older brother was also a dead shot, and he went into the Army. Instead of taking advantage of his skills they made him an MP, and he hated it. He finished his contract and got his Honorable, and got out and never looked back at law enforcement like my oldest brother and I did. These special forces guys and snipers are the top of the line dead shots, and there's almost nobody on earth who can do what they do. Kudos to them.

Well, yes, but sniper training has been around for quite some time. There was limited training in WWII, and the Korean war, but official training began in the Vietnam Era for U.S. soldiers. The school as we know it now, opened in the 80s, but soldiers have been receiving sniper training for a lot longer than people realize. Of course, before the 2nd World War, there wasn't thought to be a need for snipers, nor was there really the weaponry for it. We had specialized snipers who took out Germans, and they did pave the way for all others. Their skills aided those in Korea, then we learned from them, and so on. Weapons changed and improved, and a more formal training was undertaken in 1968. We don't forget the pioneers who started it, because we have to start somewhere, right? England, Canada, and Australia have some pretty bad@ss snipers who have aided us in wars, too, but I don't know the history of their sniper schools. I just know that I am grateful they're on our side.

The "constant" in the distance evaluation equation is the number of milimeters in an inch, 1 inch is 2.54 cm or 25.4 mm. A mile is 1.6 km
@eat28612 жыл бұрын
So it’s a conversion factor then right
@dodgeplow2 жыл бұрын
If they taught the metric system in the US this conversion factor wouldn't be needed
@CJ-ty8sv2 жыл бұрын
@@eat2861 Yes but its still a constant to calculate actual distance based on angular size and actual size. The reason why you can kind of see it as a "conversion factor" is because of working with size in inches but resulting distance in meters but its still a "Constant' that changes if you want a different output or are using a different input. For example, if using MIL and know the size in inches and want the distance in yards, its the same, formula but instead of 25.4, the constant is 27.78 or if say you worked entirely in metric and know target size in Centimeters, then the "Constant is 10 and the resulting distance is in meters and if you know the target size in meters then the Constant is 1000 (again, resulting distance in meters). For example, if you had a 12in target and it measured 0.7mils, it would be (12*25.4)/0.7 = 435.4 so the target is 435.4 meters away. Now if you had 30.5cm (basically 12inch), the formula is (30.5*10)/.7 = 435.7 (.3 difference is because 12inches is really 30.48cm, not 30.5) On the other hand, if again, the target was 12 inches and using mils it was still 0.7mils and you wanted yards it would be (12*27.78)/0.7 = 476.2 yards (which is 435.4 meters.) The shortest route is if both size and distance was in metric because in metric its just a matter of shifting the decimal to basically get size in millimeters (i.e., the x10 if size is in Centimeters and x1000 if in meters) and thus just divide by the mil reading and you have the distance in meters. Basically if I said a target was 48 centimeters, you just add a 0 to it and you have the size in millimeters (i.e., 480) then you just have to divide that 480 by the size in mils, so if it was say 0.9mils, then its just 480/.9 = 533.3 meters away. The same thing, if I tell you the size in meters, you are just shifting the decimal three places, so if I said that a target was 0.7 meters in size, then it would 700 millimeters so it would just be a 700/measured mils, or if I said it was 1.85 meters, it becomes 1850 millimeters so it would just be 1850/measured mils.... So as *dodgeplow* said above that *_"If they taught the metric system in the US this conversion factor wouldn't be needed"_* , he would be right in that you wouldn't need the "conversion factor" but really it would be that you wouldn't need the "Constant" because you just need the size in millimeters and divide that by the measured size in mils to get the distance in meters and since the metric system is a base 10 system between its units of measure, its just a matter of shifting the decimal and adding 0's (zero's) as necessary... Something anyone can do in their head. Thats partly what makes imperial a PITA, there's not standard base unit to change between the different units within the group of measurements.
