Nosferatu is one of my fav German Expressionist films. It's also made more epic when you also watch the Herzog remake and Shadow Of The Vampire!

Another fantastic release from Eureka. I studied this film as part of my film course from UEA in the 1980. Like you I live silent cinema. Here is to many more coming in the future.

Some much older films than Caligari have been released on Blu-Ray, I have for example A Trip to the Moon (1902) by Georges Melies. The question was whether any others have been released on UHD/4K.

To my knowledge the oldest films officially released on Blu-ray are the “Lumière!” Box Sets that date back to 1895. And the oldest film on DVD is the Stallone Gardner at a Gallop and the other works by Eadweard Muybridge, which date back to 1878. As for the oldest UHD? Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919/1920) as of now.

I have a blu-ray set from France called Lumiere! which is a feature length presentation of dozens of films from the 1890s, so that's almost certainly the oldest.

@@RazorwireReviews Indeed it is currently the oldest film(s) released on Blu. And I’d say it’s one of the best silent releases too!

I'm new to the world of 4K, I have a question. I bought this edition for the US, thinking that I could not play it because my player is American, but I still wanted to have it for collection, but I was reading that most 4K discs do not have region lock, there are some but mostly they are free. Is this edition free? Will I be able to play it with my US player?

Are the intertitles in English?? I've got the Blu ray of Metropolis from a few years ago and the intertitles are in German with English subtitles underneath which ruined it for me because I've watched other versions which were shorter but the intertitles were English so it seemed lazy

Any foreign silent film restoration worth its salt is going to have its original language with English subtitles, because you're talking about original footage from a potentially 100 year old film. To have the fullest preserved version of a film, as it was seen in cinemas back in the silent era is always going to be the goal of any company who puts money into restoring these classic films. So really, putting in English intertitles, made today, would be lazier in a way, than painstakingly restoring or in some cases recreating, the original intertitles in the correct language. The blu-ray of Metropolis you're talking about is the most complete and faithfully preserved version of the film available. I understand if the English subtitles bother you, but any restorations of silent films are going to be geared more at presenting the most complete version of the film possible, over catering to English speaking audiences with the intertitles.

Great film, great artwork & great release by MoC. Shame about the disc case, though. I am sure they could have used something better than that ugly plastic case with the '4K Ultra HD' at the top...

That's the industry standard 4K case for any release, not too much more they could've done with that aspect of it really!

@@RazorwireReviews Yes, I appreciate that, but it is not a standard edition, and after putting so much effort in creating such a beautiful artwork and slipcase, they could have come up with something nicer for the 4K case. I have always found those standard Blu-ray and 4K cases ugly. I own movies on DVD and Blu-ray in editions where the company didn't use a standard case. They look way better. At least the 4K case is not visible when it is in its slipcase. Anyway, it doesn't really matter, it is just a bit disappointing. 🙂
