I've been using the same MX510 mouse since 2004. It is by far the most ergonomic, perfectly weighted mouse I've ever had. The thumb groove allows you to relax your grip and flick the mouse in your palm, passing it back and forth between your thumb and your pinkie for some super precise left-to-right micro-movements. Never been able to do it with aything else.

I don't understand why Logitech abandoned the shape of the MX518? Some people still swear by this old mouse. They should have made a modern follow up, maybe a wireless version. I only recently stopped using mine because I wanted to cut the cord, and wireless tech had finally reached the point where you can do so without sacrifices. But the mouse was a tank. It stood up for years. Even after more than a decade on it was still going strong...unlike the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorers I had before it which wouldn't last more than about three years before crapping out.

This is kind of funny. I came to this video to see how MX510 -- which I use right now -- compares and I am flattered. It's been more than 10 years before my mouse started to act up giving me double clicks and RMB drag not working so I wanted to see what others think. As I said, I am glad to know everyone loves it. MX500, MX510 and MX518 were all never versions of each other, there is no "this is a gaming mouse and this isn't"... they all are, the DPI differences was just the rat race between vendors that needed to push higher DPI numbers on the boxes each new refresh that they've put out. By now we all know polling rate is a much more important metric than DPI. I still play Quake Champions at 800 dpi ... even though my mouse can do 20 times that.

Ahh... good ol' memories of using the MX510 while playing Guild Wars. Simpler times... Simpler times. Also, while the MX518 was a "gaming" mouse, Logitech didn't really go full gaming with the MX line until they brought out the G5, which is the MX510 shape with a better sensor and it was the first mouse to feature adjustable weights and DPI buttons. The general ergonomics of this line of mice has been carried forward with the majority of their mice for both gaming and productivity. I'm currently trying to find a suitable replacement for my G700s and test driving a Razer Basilisk Ultimate, but no matter what, the comfort of the G700s far exceeds the Basilisk. I don't know if I'll be able to permanently make the switch.

I still have a G5 from 2004 at my parents place. This thing cost 54 euros new and held up well for a good 12 years before I moved on to the G502 and G603 for traveling. The G5 had issues with the scroll wheel after 10 years and after 12 years the switches also didn't function that well. However, I spent many long gaming sessions with it daily and at about 4,50 euros a year, or just about 1 cent per day it's been a pretty good investment. I feel like my G502 will hold up just as well, if not better.

I've this week bought a Logitech G305 Wireless gaming mouse. It is a good mouse, but you can see how they have cut costs over the years when comparing this to my all time favorite Logitech, the VX Nano which unfortunatly is no longer made. That worked like a charm and fitted way better in the hand. Any mouse over time if used daily will fail eventually. The older ones were I guess over-engineered compared to some modern ones.
@Sgtpeterenis6 жыл бұрын
First off: try the MX Anywhere! It's really not fair to judge a mouse's quality based on how it fits your hand, since that's a very individual thing. Sure, some mice are just a bad shape no matter what, but the 305 doesn't seem to be a complete mess - just not right for you. It's also a full size mouse (I think?) and the nano is obviously a small mouse. That's why I'd recommend the MX Anywhere, it seems much closer to the nano.
@SamoMalo26 жыл бұрын
Older ones were made to last while new ones need to survive the 2-3 year guarantee and then die.

I'm an owner of a Logitech MX518, G5 Second Edition, and a G403. I actually owned the G5 Second Edition for a number of years before I got a MX518 at work. The G5 Second Edition has a number of features that make it more of a "gaming" mouse than the MX518. It has a set of adjustable weights, a laser sensor (a "plus" at the time), as well as 3 sensitivity settings you can set on the fly. It also has a textured finish that supposedly gives you a better grip and a sort-of braided cable. The G5 Second Edition is built like a tank and it still works to this day, although the case does show some signs of wear around the sensitivity indicator lights and the braided cable seems to be fraying by being bunched up in a twist tie for so many years. It outlived 2 Razer Deathadder mice and still works without any problems. I am now using a Logitech G403 and I like the feel of it. I honestly wasn't too impressed with the MX518. It felt like a fairly mediocre mouse after using the G5 Second Edition for so long. What bothered me the most was that the MX518 has a glossy finish which I think contributes to a lot of grime buildup around the buttons and thumb rest. Like the MX510 in the video, the paint around the logo was also coming off. I think it was also prone to unnecessarily filtering your input and I don't think that's correctable without some sort of 3rd party driver software, which I avoid installing.

I have an MX510 which I think is also about 14 years old. I'm not a gamer, just a computer user. It seems that something has finally gone wrong with my mouse and I think it is the cable where it connects to the body of the mouse. When the mouse is moved, or if I move the cable up and down, it disconnects and connects randomly and makes its connecting and unconnecting sounds. Do you think I could get it fixed? Would it be worth it? I love my mouse (it's one of the last things my hubby bought before departing from this life :) ). I had just discovered the use of the next/previous buttons, and found those very useful. Should I just look for another one and if so, what would you recommend? Thanks for your video - it was very good to know I had something special!

Still have my mx510. Still the best mouse I've ever owned. The statement that the mx510 isn't a gaming mouse is outright silly. The mx518 replaced the mx510. They weren't sold alongside each other. You really should do your research.

I've had a couple of these myself and LOVED THEM. I've moved up to a Logitech G903 with wireless charging pad, love it to!

I miss my G9. I need to crack it open and fix the USB wire issue that it developed. Which, sadly, Logitech refused to repair.

Loved that mouse. Really got old in the end.

My G9/G9x hybrid is still going strong and I hope it will for many years, since Logitech doesn't plan to provide a replacement. I've never found a better desktop mouse, to the point that I use it at work and in travel.

One thing I learned in owning a gaming mouse is to not get a ruberrized textured mouse. Eventually the rubber will corrode because of sweat and oils. I had to clean my mouse recently and the disgusting rubber material became sticky. I had to use generous amounts of alcohol just to clean it. Now it's just bare plastic but admitedly it feels better and looks better. Just wish companies research the longetivity of materials used before putting it on an expensive product.

Still rocking the blue Logitech G5 Laser after all these years. I've had to replace the chord once and the Teflon pads twice, but it's still kickin'!

I had the MX518. It still actually works after 8 years of gaming, but my cousin had left it outside in the Indian sun so the rubber areas are all half melted now.

I'm still using a 2nd gen Logitech G5. Going on 11 years with it and it still works perfectly. Logitech knew how to make a solid mouse back then.

I loved the fact that I could keep my ring finger on that little ledge on top of the mouse which was way more comfortable than any other mouse for me. I don’t understand why seemingly most gaming mice has a shape that flares out towards the front of the mouse, makes absolutely no sense from an ergonomic perspective...

Still using my MX500. So that's now 15 years. Though I had to repair one of the switches and clear out all the dust. Only the fact that lots of mice are now wireless could tempt me to switch.

I've been telling my brother that I'd by a refreshed version of the MX518 with upgraded sensors in a heartbeat.

Had mine until 5 years ago when the cable broke :( I tried to fix it but the cable was a bit hard to route without making it fragile so I just gave up on it. I really really regret it now since that was the BEST feeling mouse I've ever had.

I used mx518 since 2009 I think until 2018/9. Broke cable 1 time l, cleaned it 2-3times. My skates wore of... But it still works. I will keep it as backup mouse, or I'll take it to work as work mouse. Upgraded to G403Wireless, its nice mouse. But I liked ergonomics on MX518 more. If they rereleased Mx518 with hero or pwm 3366 and wireless would buy it instantly.

Been using my MX518 for at least 10 years. I've taken it apart and cleaned it, and put new pads on the bottom. I replaced the cable, but the crappy chinese replacement cable died in a week so I switched back to the original cable. I would like to take it apart again soon so I can put some graphite powder in the scroll wheel mechanism.

Like so many others I still have one of these in good working condition. Great mouse, no gimmicks, just well-made and comfortable.

Still got mine and still game with it. All the buttons and the scroll wheel are still working. It's a bit dirty on the outside, but I keep the inside clean and the pads have a lot of wear on them but they are still decent. I want to get my hands on the brand new MX518 hero that was just released in Asia.

I actually had the G400s as my first gaming mouse and I really liked its size that just lets my palm rest on it easily~ but I have to give it up for warranty (check out Logitech's 3 year warranty, very useful). Lasted me just a month before its 3 year mark and got a g402 as a replacement, which is still pretty awesome~ Logitech all the way! Edit on 2 years later, folded in and now waiting for the Logitech MX518 Legendary and arrive 😂

I remembered searching so hard for this particular MX510 because there were no MX518/G5 available - back in my highschool days 7-8 years ago

I upgraded from the MX518 to the Logitech G PRO Wireless last week. Certainly the wireless functionality is the main reason I switched. The 518 unfortunately doesn't slide as well, even after cleaning the feet. Dirt builds up along where the button edges meet the housing and is quite difficult to clean, and the rubber grip finish is worn through in places. The MX518 is also heavier, and the design of the optical sensor 'hole' means that dust (and in my case, pet hair) find its way inside and frustrate the experience. I also prefer the scroll wheel on the G PRO Wireless. Certainly not everyone should rush out to buy a 200 CAD gaming mouse, but my positive experience with the MX518 since its release is my primary factor for trusting Logitech to give me at least another decade with the new one. Plus, now I can bring the 518 to work... will have the best mouse in the office by far!
