Nobody wanted Sailfish more than I did after falling in love with the Nokia N9, my favorite phone ever. (I had to import one from China and reflash it.) Jolla has ignored North America from day one, although they took my money for the stillborn tablet. After the Sony partnership that finally included models that would run here, they refused to sell the OS to Canadians with no explanation. I finally just gave up over a year ago. Considering the OS license was an annual purchase, it didn't seem worth it to keep fighting when they didn't want my money. They still owe me $150 from the tablet debacle but heaven forbid returning it in the form of a Sailfish download! They're not very professional and it's truly sad.

@jgibbon3 жыл бұрын
SFOS was never an annual purchase, though. They guarantee a minimum of a year's worth of support for paid Sailfish X users, which isn't the same as invalidating the license or stopping updates. I've bought my first license in 2018 and still get updates for that phone. (The Jolla Phone was only recently declared EOL after 7 years because they did have to rely on an old kernel, by the way.) A simple VPN like the free one built into Opera is apparently sufficient to get the store working in America. After the purchase, you can always access the current system image without a VPN, iirc. I agree though, the combination of small company size, not a lot of ressources and at times the habit of communicating just a bit worse than the community hopes for can get a bit irritating. And the tablet thing was indeed embarassing, to say the least.
@jozsefizsak3 жыл бұрын
@@jgibbon I defended them tirelessly for a very long time but when they ignored me consistently, it was clear that they don't give a damn. @@jozsefizsak yeah, the one year thing was worded a bit weird, I guess it was to not be forced into support too long in case the whole thing didn't work out. I can totally understand that all these points are enough to not care anymore, I just wanted to clear up the annual purchase misunderstanding. (And the VPN thing - jolla themselves don't care where you're from, I guess it's just some regulation forcing them to officially not sell to America without legal representatives there or something.) Finally! Thank you for this review, Wolfgang, it's great. Jolla just announced a new device for SFOS (Xperia 10 II) and it would be great to do a review of that one when it comes out. As you may already know, there is this guy on KZbin called "Leszek Lesner" who dedicate the majority of his channel to Sailfish OS. Also, if my informations are still up to date a Google Nexus 5 with Ubuntu Touch seems to be the safest Smartphone device when it comes to privacy. But don't quote me on that. Furthermore the whole privacy thing mainly depends on the software you installed. "Rob Braxman Tech" on KZbin developed an open source App for messaging without the need of a phone number. So for all of you guys who want to plan the next 9/11 this may be the best choice if you want to escape the grasp of the FBI. Anyway, thank you a lot for this and the rest of your videos. I'm using sailfish OS as my daily driver. I highly recommend checking out which phones sailfish supports from the Jolla shop before taking action. For example, I'm using the XA2 *PLUS*, which is still a budget phone from a couple of years shop, but is higher spec'd (eg twice the RAM (6GB)) and not much more expensive than the one shown here. It also doesn't have the performance issues the Wolfgang was having. Updates are regular (~3 months). They finally dropped support for their first phone a couple of months ago. That was something like 7 years of updates. Try finding an android or iOS phone that is officially supported, and usable that long.
@WolfgangsChannel3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, iPhone 5S gets pretty close (6 years of support). The OG Jolla Phone is hadly "usable" these days, and didn't exactly have flagship level performance back when it came out. I was considering getting it back in 2017, and even back then the consensus was to just get a Sony device, since the Jolla Phone was really showing its age.
@FunnyHacks3 жыл бұрын
@@WolfgangsChannel Apologies, "usable" is quite subjective, and I adjust my expectations based on the hardware. You're right, hardware specs have always been the achilles heal of Sailfish compatible devices. But they do really well with what they have. Taking that into account the Jolla 1 is still a usable phone. Calls, SMS, email, Android support (4.4.4) all still work well enough for what I need. I even did chroots on there for a while. Having said that, I did move onto more powerful phones because I wanted to do more capable chroots that were more RAM hungry. But seriously, do check out the other devices that Sailfish supports. You've chosen one of the oldest, which would explain why you were experiencing things like stuttering and poor battery life. Depending on my usage, I get 2-3 days out of my XA2 plus. I've heard that they are about to add some newer spec'd devices to the lineup, but I don't have anything official to point to there. Apologies, I didn't intend to come across as combative. It's just a shame you missed out at seeing it run on better hardware.

SFOS XA2 user for nearly 2 years now, and it's a solid contender. Still not efficient, I have crashes every now and then, but with microG, most of my app gap issues are solved, Play services aren't lost fully, and native apps are getting better with each day, which is impressive. My biggest complaint with SFOS is its keyboard. Despite having great QoL features like the paste bar, there's this insufferable thing with the positioning of the bottom row: symbol, comma, space, period and enter keys are all nearly the same size, and it's.common.to,do.this,stuff.all.the time in your messages. Unfortunately, coderus hasn't released an updated patchmanager yet so my preferred large spacebar patch has been stuck in limbo for 3 months now since I updated to SFOS 4. Better news is, the Xperia 10 ii was just announced as supporting SFOS, with an X license coming soon for the Android support, so we're future-proofed for now on a new phone.

The latest version hit OpenRepos Mar 3, and the store Mar 15, but it is justa build target addition and translation update. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe i'm too used used to some few rough edges... after all i have daily-driven SFOS since the launch in 2013.

Diclaimer, Before you proceed installing Sailfish , please note that : 1, Boot loader will not be re locked for XA 2 , 2, its really very hard to go back to stock Rom 3, Sail fish is still in its infancy , APp support is really very bad , there are no main stream apps , e.g. Facebook , whats app, instagram , etc etc .

Thanks for bringing attention to Sailfish! More users on Sailfish means better apps and apps written for sailfish are more intercompatible with other linux phones than android apps, so stronger community on sailfish benefits fully open source linux phones too

What's funny is that I bought a Sony Xperia XA2 purely because it's one of the last 16:9 Android phones that I could find on the market. I've used one of those super-tall Xiaomis and I hated it, the Sony is much more comfortable. And I had no idea that SailfishOS even existed, so that's a win-win.

The Pinephone doesn't cost twice as much. The ad is for the 200 dollar 3GB/32GB model (not the 150 dollar 2GB/16GB model), which costs with import about 220-240 euros in Germany.

Wolfgang, I’ve used sailfish on an Xperia for a few years as a secondary device now. But now I’ve heard they are going to put the updates behind a paywall. What do you think it’s time to switch to graphene or something like that?

I had no problems at all getting a pinephone. I ordered a pinephone literally just 2 days before the date on this video, and the device was delivered to me halfway around the world in less than a week, despite me ordering it the day after the cutoff date listed for an April delivery. It came much earlier than I expected, and about 2 weeks earlier than the estimated date that was given when I ordered it. Maybe I just got lucky, but I don't think so. They seem to be available to anyone that wants to get one, with only a minor estimated delay for delivery.

only issue with it is that it's entirely too slow to be usable. Sucks cause I'm SO ready to get away from google and shit.
@nunyobiznez8753 жыл бұрын
@@locklear308 The SoC is definitely a bit disappointing and won't win any speed awards, but it IS usable. On the plus side though, it should also have good battery life lol. I do wish they had gone with a more powerful SoC as well, but I'm guessing the primary reason for choosing this specific SoC, is because there's a full suite of open source drivers available in the mainline kernel for it, which has been one of the biggest hurdles for a project like this. Especially the cellular modem drivers, which is basically the difference between having a phone or a tiny tablet with no mobile connectivity. Most other SoCs are fully dependent on proprietary binary drivers, with licensing restrictions. But I'm certain there were other considerations for this specific SoC as well. I didn't buy this phone intended as a long term solution. I wasn't even sure I was going to use it as a primary device. The price is low enough, and I'd be happy if I got a year or two out of it. Hopefully there will be other options down the road. In the mean time, it'll still be a fun toy, even after it's replaced, especially having the docking bar. Not to mention, you won't have Google tracking your every move on GPS, which they do even if you think you've disabled it, or have them monitoring everything you do online, just mostly everything lol.

The PinePhone is "out of stock" because it's sold in batches. You can buy them every now and then, you just need to keep up with Pine64's news. Also, Anbox is not "paravirtualisation". It's just a container, like what Docker uses.

In December I was lucky enough to get a brand new Xperia 10 at a clearance sale for 1500 NOK (~$180). It was an absolute steal and SailfishOS 4 fixed most issues I had with Sailfish (most notably the extremely outdated browser engine). So I’m probably going to be using it until the Pinephone matures. I’m hoping the Xperia 10 ii will go on a similar sale as well when the Xperia 10 iii is out. (Assuming the Pinephone isn’t my daily driver by then)

Hey wolfgang, good video. However you can get a better phone for about the same price that runs android, sailfish os, and even linux! That phone is the OnePlus 6. It has an octocore cpu and 8 gb ram. I got mine for $180

Fair point! Unfortunately, Sailfish OS X is only supported on Sony phones, which means that even though some phones might be able to run SFOS through community ports, they'll lack the Android app functionality, as well as predictive text input and some other features.

If you get a Sailfish device, make sure to install Aliendalvik-control, patchmanager and no home carouselle patch. I have used SFOS for about 5 years. I can say for all this time it has been completely usable as your only daily driver and quite enjoyable, but it has its flaws. You have to not like Android or really want to use something else for it to be worth it. The good: - The UI is amazing, in my opinion so much better than any other OS, especially with patches - Native apps have really consistent UI, they look beautiful and I prefer them over most Android ones - Android apps actually just work, with MicroG the compatibility is similar to ungoogled Android, even bank apps - Lightness of the OS and native apps means the system just flies on even old phones, even on Jolla Phone 1 which is 7 years old, which runs OS version that is like 3 months old The bad: - Web browser's Gecko only recently got updated which make it actually usable for modern web. But all native apps still use ancient QTWebkit - The performance of Android apps is quite bad, they eat a lot of RAM and sometimes can make my phone crash. They are there if you need them, but you should use native as much as possible - The device selection is just not good enough, only phones that right now have the full OS version with current Android support are Sony Xperia XA2 and Xperia 10. That's it. And they are older mid-range devices, which really doesn't help with Android performance - And there are many community ports for really cool devices like Pinephone, FX TEC, Fair Phone, Motorolas or OnePluses, you don't get Android support which makes them unusable as your only phone. In theory you can move Aliendalvik from your Xperia to other devices, but that is not quite legal
