The challenge of heating and keeping the bus dry has been tricky for sure. I'm a bit anxious about the delonghi radiator heater I bought, which I thought was ideal as we'd had one for 20 years that never gave us a moments trouble. Apparently some models were recalled due to fire risk. They're not supposed to be plugged into an extension cord either which we used to do all the time..heh. For the bus I had no choice, but I used a heavy 12 gauge cord and it's not even warm to the touch at the plug or anywhere along the cord. I'd love to find a safer solution though. Skoolie folks suggested using a dehumidifier has both heater and humidity control. But I worried it might not have enough moisture to work with to maintain heat, and I didn't want to be running that *and* a radiator heater. Damprid sounds like a good idea.

first big project I'd do is the floors. You can install ambient floor heating DIY and run hot water through it. Very economical and very effective in that kind of space. Added bonus you can get rid of the icky old laminate and its smells and mold (especially in the back)
@TechTimeTraveller22 күн бұрын
@briangoldberg4439 Yeah I'm trying to figure out the best heating options. Right now I don't have a proper RV power stand nearby, so I'm relying on heavy duty extension cords to the house. Suggestion for the wheels: Google "19.5 6-lug wheels" for the rear and "19.5 5-lug wheels" for the front. Those might fit and let you scrap/repurpose those widow-maker rims. Or you could possibly find (or get some made) some wheel adapters. You'd probably need a 20-ton jack to change them out and a *huge* lug wrench. If worse comes to worse: Another idea would be to go to a local used auto parts place and find something like a 2000 to 2012 Ford F-550 or bigger and get the running gear from that. The Ford front axle is a solid tube if you find a 2WD version. Anything is possible with even a cheap welder and a cheap angle grinder and/or reciprocating saw!
@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
Thanks muchly! Yes I'm considering all options on the wheels. Of all the wheels they had to be widowmakers. I really wanted to keep stuff like that original but I'd also like to be able to move the bus from time to time under its own power. I don't think widowmakers are known to randomly fly apart, I think once assembled they're fine. But is the inflation that is scary.

In the late 1960s, my parents converted a late 1940s full length school bus into a camper. As a boy, I remember them driving it and us to our vacation property on the Potomac River, where it would sit until fall, when it would then be driven back to Pennsylvania to become a hunting camp. Oddly or coincidently, in the 1980s, my father painted it a similar color of light blue. I remember the first time they took it for a Pennsylvania vehicle inspection the large front and rear red stop lights had to be decommissioned in some manner, Aluminum foil duct tape was the acceptable quick fix. I finally sent it off to the great school parking lot in the sky in the early 2010s, after my father's death, by then it had become a catchall shed filled with mostly junk he couldn't part with. Have fun with your project, that is what memories consist of after all.

Of course such an approach will annoy and upset anyone expecting to inherit from you, but that is, quite literally, not your problem anymore.
@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
I'm not in a negative equity position, but definitely one could argue that a school bus and rooms full of vintage computing items do not constitute a 'need'. I used to be solidly in the 'save every penny for the future' camp. But lately as age creeps up and people I know pass on, I'm thinking there's nothing wrong with some small financial misadventures. Big Blue is a thing of beauty, and a flawed gem! I completely agree on keeping the dinette, stove and living space combo as intact as feasible, even if not operational: it gives the bus a heartwarming "second home" vibe. Oh, and don't worry about the channel identity too much: extra money is always good, but if you don't feel like chasing the algorithm to turn this into a "second job", doing what you enjoy is the best way to handle a KZbin channel while keeping pressure and expectations (both from inside and outside) in check, in my opinion. Oh, and by the way, I think this *is* your channel identity: a pleasant and humorous mix of your vintage interests. We'll be along for the ride!
@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
Many thanks! Big Blue has been an adventure and welcome distraction from my day job. And yes, I'm definitely trying to keep my options open with Big Blue because lately KZbin has been really.. well.. lousy. Like, since June every video I release is massively underperforming my own averages. I see other creators are also getting lower view counts as well. I enjoy filming but it's a big process, and if YT is shutting you down within the first 60 seconds of a release, you kinda think.. ok, what's a better use of my time? So I don't want to change the bus *too* much, because I think after next year if I'm not seeing improvement, I'll probably take a walk and then the bus can become a proper mancave or RV or whatever.

@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
I think those items will be a tall order - school buses aren't produced in the same volume as cars obviously and stuff from the 1960s has been mostly gone from years. What remains is either restored and driving or sitting rotting in some anonymous field somewhere. Hoping my video catches some eyeballs near similar year buses I can pilfer parts from. Yeah I'm having a think about the kitchenette. What I've done since the video is turn the old wood door that came with the bus into a table, which fits snugly between the dinette and the back of the bus. Actually kind of like it, although it dominates the space. I had wanted to put a couch or something back there so I could come in in the evening and read comfortably. But if I took the dinette out, I could put a small couch there also.. hmm.

Almost every one of those electric oil filled radiator heaters eventually almost burns the house down with plug failing. I have had it happen to two myself and have picked up like half a dozen off the side of the road with scorched plugs. Most were the Delonghi ones. The molded plug they come with just isn't up to the task. Best to just lop it off right now and install a proper, heavy duty, Leviton or the like on there just for piece of mind. I think they have trouble more than others because the when they kick on they stay one longer than other designs heating up the thermal mass of the oil.
@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
@BrianRRenfro Really! I've had another DeLonghi for 20 years and no issue. That said, I have been a little paranoid and have been checking the plug every day because it is connected to an extension cord. The cord is a heavy duty unit and is plugged into a 15A GFCI. So far it seems downright cold to the touch, so I'm hoping it doesn't burn on me as I don't really have better options at the moment. But definitely will consider a plug change.

@@TechTimeTraveller I think it's when people use them more as primary heating where they run A LOT. I ran one for a decade as supplemental heater in a room and was fine. Hi, Pretty cool, just quickly flicking through while i am at work , so you may have answered my question in video Quick question, why not get a older caravan, it has been on my bucket list for 20 years, when the wife says "do what you like" i have learnt that is the last thing she means The caravan is considered not a fixture if it is portable, and you can make is park-able with just some simple gravel and large pavers where the wheels and stands are, you can run power to it and even park it under a carport or lean to and still comply with most councils ( adding water via garden hose is ok, but connecting to sewer system is considered permanent ) I am based in Australia, and almost every council allows a "Granny Flat" a self contained mini home that you can legally have in your back yard as long as you have the minimum land - say 450 square meters ( some new estates are shrinking that to 280sm ) You can legally rent them out as well due to the ongoing rental housing, but if you have large land, you are limited to one per home land title so if you have a 2000sm yard still just one In Additional they allow a 'Studio' as well - it cannot be larger than the granny flat, but the limitation is you cannot live in it 24/7 or rent it out as 'Habitable' - most people use it as a outdoor kitchen / kids play room, emergency bedroom / sick room / lounge room / theatre room / pool change area and shower - toilet - so pretty much one room Square meter is slightly larger than square yard, 36 inches to the foot and 39 to the meter so max 10% larger Regards George

So you were playing old PC games in a bus that used to be a camper and thinking about all the things that happened in that bus? How about "Leisure Suit Larry goes to Burning Man"?

I think you should remove the kitchen and use the old door as a new countertop. That's just my 2 cents. Excited to see what you have in store. Thanks for another great video! should name it the "data bus" or "unibus"?
@TechTimeTraveller23 күн бұрын
I've actually set up the door as a table at back. I'll show that off sometime but KZbin is really tanking this video so probably will do it elsewhere like on my website.

I havent even watched the video yet, but you better sell that bus before you end up sinking untold amounts of money into it. Just look up other youtube bus projects and how they end on episode 500 with them giving up due to lack of time and funds and a bus in worse shape then when they bought it.
@TechTimeTraveller24 күн бұрын
@saberpeep That's why I bought this one in particular. It has the interior work already done, all I've done is clean it up and make it habitable. And so far it seems to be working. I think my total spend including the bus is less than $4k. It doesn't need to move anywhere for a while.

When you discovered the rat nest under the dash area I was really hoping/expecting some sort of rat nesting cartoon. It's not too late to still create one. Please....

Neat! Better you than me cleaning out all that rat poop, though. 🤮 I think I'd have to burn the bus after seeing that, LOL. (Not really; that's probably illegal and dangerous.) The wood interior is really neat, and I agree that it would be a shame to dismantle the kitchenette. I am quite puzzled by the apparently useless wood stove, though. Sure, it looks quaint, but the whole point of a wood stove or fireplace is to be able to cozy up by with a nice fire going! In such a small place, it seems like an odd waste of space to install it and not connect the flue for real. Those electrical outlets are a surprising design choice as well and make me want to plug in a whole lotta monitors. ;-) Good luck on the project!

Thanks! My guess on the stove is that it was purely decorative. This bus was located at a lake in the Cariboo region of BC and was used as a bed and breakfast. I'm guessing no one used it during winter and in summer you'd have a fire outside. I think the stove has seen some use in the past but probably not in the bus.

Tempting! A lot will depend on if I can reverse the channel's decline. Every video I release now, within 60 seconds KZbin is telling me it's underperforming my averages by 50%. It's just not giving out impressions anymore no matter how good the CTR and retention numbers are. So I'm thinking this year I'll make a push, hoping having some space will help, but if not I'll close shop and just use that money to get my mancave back on the road!
@JimLeonard23 күн бұрын
@@TechTimeTraveller Well, hey, don't get discouraged by KZbin's notices: You had a video go viral (Miniscribe bricks) and that has skewed the metrics for everything else. Don't look at it as "decline"; you're certainly not losing subscribers for example. Just stay the course and give it another year, and re-evaluate after that.

Wrt the name: Given the fact that you can't seem to be able to designate it to one project, it needs to be 'universal', and since your computer storage is elsewhere and you probably don't have enough space for multiple projects at once, you need to do them in a 'serial' fashion, so maybe call your computer... okay, I'll stop now.

Iec c15 as it's the female plug. C16 would be male version of not mistaken. Though I have not seen them in outlets, is what the modern world used for power plugs on devices like computer power supplies and about anything else needing an ground a some power. before usb-c/USB-pd started taking over. America has one of the worst socket designs known to man.

Maybe "Little Stinker"? The wood all over is so cool. It found a good home- that´s nice. Don´t overthink it- it´s a good bus for what it is. Maybe hook up with "BusGreaseMonkey"- if ther´s something to know about old buses: He´s the Guy.
