I think what makes the 90s so special for many people in terms of fashion is that it was the last true era of originality before fast fashion took over for good. The 90s was the last era where quality still had priority over quantity, trend cycles weren’t crazy fast paced and the trends actually reflected the era and weren’t just simply 1:1 upcycles from past eras like they are today. While they did take a lot of inspiration from the 70s and 50s, the key Word here is inspiration and not copying.Ever since the mid 2000s, fashion trends have evolved into just being a plain copy of whatever was popular 20 years ago.Evolution has almost completely stopped. The 90s however took a bit of inspiration from past eras while still giving them a contemporary twist that was unarguably 90s. Subcultures were actual subcultures with values and not just watered down aesthetics, alternative people were proud of being alternative and didn’t water themselves down to still fit in somewhat.Clean goth and clean gyaru would’ve been impossible in the 90s. Designers came up with original ideas and didn’t just fart out whatever so they can have as many collections as possible. The 90s was the last era of original style.

The Smokey Eye makeup look was also popularized by Carmindy on the show What Not to Wear. My dad bought his first starter jacket after saving for months after working at a hot dog spot. He messed up wearing it to work and got robbed and jumped for it. I miss fashion back then in the sense that if you had an outfit that people knew they couldn't get because it was off the wracks, that outfit would be an investment later on in life. With today's fashion, you can't get that same luxury, nor quality! Even the big-name brands are going cheap, it sucks!
