To PSA’s credit, they are making a lot of changes to be more customer friendly/competitive/quicker, but one thing I would love if they did, was give an explanation in their reasoning behind the grades. So if you got a 6 and didn’t know why, you could go online, look up the PSA number and see the grader notes. It would at least provide insight into their thought process. Seems sometimes grading is so subjective that it calls into question how they come up with graded.

Agreed, however would be a driver of additional expense to grade. For the one off 'wonder what they saw', you'd be paying a LOT more over the course of perhaps hundreds of cards

@@longlostsonicsfan I don’t think it would increase the time much, since they’re already documenting the grading in their database/CRM. As it moves through each stage of the grading process, what has been assessed is captured (since they need the evaluation to calculate the grade). I’m suggesting PSA be more transparent with why they are already capturing internally. Plus, they are going to starting scanning cards and adding the pictures to the gradings, so added notes should be easy.

If an ultra modern/modern card gets a 6 at psa and you can’t see it or missed it while evaluating it yourself, there’s mostly likely a bend or bow or indention that runs from one side of surface to other could be left right or top bottom, it doesn’t look like a crease you would typically see on a vintage card, more like a raised line or one that goes into surface. You mix that with say centering you would typically see on a 9 mint and that’s the reason why most of those grade 6. I was curious as well, so I bought a bunch of 6’s had my customers that i knew had some send them in and that’s what I found.

Yeah I'm sorry I lost all trust in PSA when they sent me back a Gretzky that was deemed mini size. I pack pulled the Gretzky card myself. It was the same size as all the other cards in that particular 79 Topps pack. And they also charged me for that card even though they didn't grade it. If I ever grade again I will use SGC only. Money and resale value shouldn't be the only factor when grading.

Because of your financial analysis and pregrading, you have the best submission videos I've seen. One bit of advice: it would be nice to take a past submission video and compare the actual sale prices when you sell (minus costs) versus what you projected. I'd love to see a few videos of that nature.

STOOOOOOOPPPP PLAYING... I just sent a 23! card submission for the vintage special. I sent a Maravich RC so I may get upcharged and some of them were SO sharp, I may have to vault and sell one to pay for it. Sent another 18 behind it... wow. You, another guy and I sent in 19 the same month. If he has a 23 card submission, Im'ma faint.

Great video! However, adding a 10% seller fee might be a more accurate Profit/Loss. Since the fee is based on the sold price. If that’s 5k worth of cards then need to subtract $500 from that $1,815.

I only have 2 questions: Where do I sell them? Who is buying them? I HATE sports cards and sports memorabilia. The people without money think they're worth a lot. And the people with money think they're worthless. I have around 20000 cards from 70s to late 90s and have never sold one. I think I'm going to do a video of me shredding all of them.

When adding in profit, you left out the selling fees and the taxes, lol. Not only do you pay taxes, but it becomes a headache keeping up with all the data/receipts to show your CPA, and your time doing it. Time is money, how much time does it take and space to store all the receipts and keep them in order by year bought and year sold, carry over losses/gains in inventory year over year. I'm all for getting cards graded but some of the fun has been taken out by big brother. I would look up the graded value of cards before shipping them off, most won't net you a profit.

Just make sure if you crack the Nolan to send in the tag so PSA can take it off the pop count.

On that nolan arenado card. There are cards that end up on the run over by a truck division that psa gives 6's on. And you mention that you looked over it closely. You obviously have a good eye. How is it possible for this to happen. There is no quality control at psa. As a company what's a great way to double your revenue. Hand out low grades and wait for the resubmittal of those cards. And if you do it right, maybe even triple your revenue in the 3rd go round.

A 1/1 is graded on what basis? I don't see the point in grading 1/1's considering it is an opinion on a card with no comparables. Any 1/1's should only be submitted as authentic grade.

Another awesome video for those of us that want to learn how to understand some of thornier financial issues. I would like to expand on a concept you mentioned: liquidity. As I have gone through my journey I noticed that one thing prevents me from buying and selling properly is not getting what I feel is the "going price" for something. Liquidity comes in big time. Hotter players are easier move near the "correct price", but rarer things often require more time. And time is money. What has paralyzed me is small value ($5-10) and medium value ($25-75) just sitting on my table at shows and on eBay. To move quickly you have to make deals. If you are like me, I am now only buying most months out of proceeds, and this presents a problem. Even more reason to only buy singles, so you are not stuck with a lot of mid to low range "value" that is not very liquid. Thanks for another great video!

Appreciate you sharing this. Very entertaining and educational. Unfortunately, once you sell and they take out fees (presuming you are selling online) then some of the ones with minimal profits end up being break evens. But, you are more likely to get closer to your asking price when they are graded rather than raw. Thanks again Chris. Great job!

No way that Nolan Arenado is a 6 unless PSA damaged the card like they did mine. PSA couldve damaged the card and put a small crease on your card. PSA put a really small crease in my MJ card and gave me a 6(it took me forever to finally see the crease), and the worst thing about it is that I couldnt do shit about it cause it was my word vs theirs.

You mentioned a couple of times that a card may have gotten a lower grade because it is 55/45. Wasn’t PSA’s 10 standard 60/40 for centering?

I dont know anything about Mint grading. KSA has a niche following, mainly with hockey collectors, but it is not considered credible by most major industry companies (ebay, COMC, Goldin, PWCC, etc)

Love the videos Chris, thanks for doing these! On that Arenado maybe check with a magnifying glass for a hairline crease or something; I had a 2013 DeAndre Hopkins RC 50/50 on card auto that got a 6 and I found a horizontal crease on the back in the white with a lighted magnifying glass.

This might be a dumb question, but when you crack a card for regrading, do you "report" it to the original grading company so that the card is removed from its pop report? As an owner of the card I imagine you wouldn't want pop reports inflated by cards that have been graded multiple times. Or is this something that is so rare that it likely wouldn't have an effect on "true" pop reports

The raw value is misleading .. people are paying far above psa 9 prices for raw cards nowadays. As far as ultra modern. I don't any ultra modern at all.. Only 90s stuff. Gonna be the hottest vintage of all time

I pulled a Babe Ruth relic card out of triple thread The Relic says Sultan of Swat it's number 218 and it's all Jersey relics with three pinstripes it says game-used and also says cut autograph is it an error because there's no autograph should I get it graded

Sigh...... Having never been a fan of having my cards graded I broke down and sent in a dozen cards to PSA through my local hobby shop. I broke my own rule of having a few low s# cards graded and I took a flyer one card that I knew might not have even been worth grading except for the history of the card. I got a few 10's, mostly 9's, an 8 and a 7 on the card I took a "flyer" on. The highlights were a 9 & a 10 on 2 Pokemon secret rares. The 8 was an Aaron Donald Contenders Rookie Ink - very disappointing. The 7 was an Upper Deck Hillary Clinton #PP-7 which was pulled on the factory floor for being "too controversial". I got a 9 on the same purple refractor Machado seen in the video here. (I have 6 or so of those cards. Must've sent in the wrong one!) The 2 "money" cards were a Harper Chrome Refractor rookie which came back a 10 and a 2014 Chrome Tom Brady Gold Refractor #/50 that got a 9. I also got a 9 somehow on a beautiful A&G Jackie Robinson stained glass mini I pulled from a box loader triple rip card. That one is a head scratcher as I pulled it at the shop I bought it from and immediately handed it over for grading submission. We all thought instant 10. Oh well. That leaves a 2013 Topps Archives Carlton Fisk All Star auto s# 3/5 I pulled from a Wal Mart blaster. That lone card is responsible for pulling me back into the hobby 10 years ago. And then a Contenders Nick Madrigal rookie Diamond auto /15 that received a 9. In total it cost me $326. And before I sent these out I was actually dead-set against having my cards graded and avoided it at all costs. I just wasn't a fan. Now.... I may be hooked. It def. adds yet another level to the "gamble" that is embedded in the hobby today. My little investment seems like it will pay off in spades! My problem is what to send in next...... (not a bad problem to have)

Two questions: #1 Do you use a card centering tool to assist in grade submissions? I recently watched another video of someone that uses a plastic looking card sized tool that has grid lines on it, to help determine centering. #2 Have you considered consigning cards? I know that you use consignment services, but with your increased exposure and obvious high credibility, that you'd find some success in that. I assume not currently being in the states may be a barrier, but perhaps a future endeavor.

I do not use any sort of measuring tool. Just my own eye and occasionally a small magnifying glass. I do take collections on consignment now and then.

I had the privilege of going to Cal Ripley’s last game. The ticket I have from it is likely rare. I unfortunately let it fade. However, the ticket was a “honored” ticket from the week of 9/11 that were honored for the last game as it was rescheduled from “the week sports stood still”. It unfortunately is a ticket master ticket but has the original September date. Have it displayed in my basement as a treasured item

Hey Chris, I just signed up for PSA for the first time and they sent me a book about the 50 greatest sports cards of all time. While flipping through the book I got to the Michael Jordan rookie card and as I’m reading his profile. His name is spelled correctly throughout the first part, but then his name is spelt Michael Jordon several times in the next part. Do they not have a proofreader before they print these books? have you seen this book or any of your followers have the same book with this error?
