Hey Chris.. that vending box ..yes as a young lad I would go to the corner marketplace and they would have the vending machines circa 1958-59 and up.. You would put a nickel in the slot push it in and pull it back out and the vending pack would be there..these machines would offer many different types of cards baseball, western, airplanes, and celebrities..and there was maybe three of these machines in the store!! Just another fun fact!! PS my close friend in this great hobby of ours is Rod Yiartie and he has some incredible items..he showed me his 61-62 Topps mini baseball card dealer samples..totally blown away by those!!

Sir, the more I watch your videos about vintage cards, the more and more I am falling in love with vintage cards, to the point that in the very near future, I may stop collecting modern cards and switch over to vintage card collecting only! The historical aspect of vintage cards is what I love. Thank you for the work you do on your channel, and I thank God for making me a Sports Card fanatic! 🙌🤜🤛

Back in the 50s cards from vending boxes actually went into vending machines. The 5 card bundles were vended in said bundles. On occasion you'll see the vending machines at auction houses.

Good info asmr people. I've got a lot of 1968 Topps cards in great shape from vending boxes and always thought 1966 was the first year of vending boxes, so this surprised me there were vending boxes as far back as the late 1950's.

Great video Chris as always. I agree with your view on the 1973 Clemente - I wonder if you cracked the case and sent it today to PSA would it grade a 10. I am leery of older PSA case grades of 10’s just because of the drastic price differential. 1973 Clemente in PSA 9 in October 2022 went for just $1546 - huge huge huge difference from $105k!It would seem to me the 9 was a bargain. I see alot of old labels in this auction, which I hope continue staying old labels as they change hands. PSA really screwed up when they decided to become more strict on their grading standards. No point in changing your grading standards after decades of being in the business. Now there's a ton of old labels that many people call "inferior" to the new labels, while the new labels can be called under-graded. This causes alot of confusion and frustration within the hobby that should've never became an issue to begin with. What makes this even worse, is that PSA can decide to go lenient on grading again, which will force the old labels to become more accurately graded and the new labels more under-graded.

You of all people should know about 50's vending boxes-- all of those famous high grade '52 Mantles (included the "finest known example" that sold for $12.6M) were from a vending box find by Al "Mr. Mint" Rosen in 1985. I believe there were 40+ Mantle rookies in the box.

When I saw the Joe Jackson card I immediately thought of Field of Dreams. At the beginning of the movie, there is a still shot of Ray Liotta in that same card - albeit in reverse due to the movie depicting him being right-handed.

I'm thinking that that SGC Mantle was originally graded by PSA but the owner didn't like the grade, so they sent it to SGC. some of those sets are unreal!! Seems like they would sell for more with so many high grade cards. Thanks for the video Chris!!!

Great video as usual Chris. I think a fun video would be taking a look at lower PSA serial numbered cards like that Gretzky rookie and try to determine in todays grading market if it would still grade the same. A lot of the cards in this video seem to look a lot lower of a grade than given. I am getting cards back from PSA that are grading 7's that I still can't figure out what they are looking at.

It takes money to make money. '52 Mantle sold for 600k as a SGC 8. Other than the centering/cut the card looks super tight. '52 Mantle PSA 8 sells for ~1.5m. Buy SGC 8, crack it send it to PSA. If it comes back an 8 you make ~900k. PSA grading fee for a card of this value is 10k. If it comes back a 7 (or lower somehow) you send it back to SGC. Technically they have to regrade it since the case has been cracked but given the provenance (send it back in/with the cracked case and grade) but there is near zero risk it would come back anything other than a SGC 8. (price $22,500) SGC would also be highly incentivized to return a high grade as the difference in their bottom line if they return a grade lower than an 8 is, and I'm wildly estimating here, ~$8k. So you are risking about 33k but the upside is almost 900k. Seems like a no brainer.

The 52T Jackie Autograph was the nicest thing in that auction by far. Props to whoever got it for $216k. Crazy to think it went for less than a 51b mays PSA 8. I would also take it any day of the week over the Diamond cut 52 Mantle. Nice review Chris.

Thinking maybe the person did send the 52 Topps Mantle to PSA..Sometimes PSA calls those slant/diamond cuts ...Miscuts....SGC goes not..On the 71 Topps Clemente or any card graded gem mint...Gem mint means perfect ..no off center..and the back must be included in the grade..Otherwise to me its just mint..

I don’t get how one Mantle card graded slightly higher that’s a few years newer goes for less than a full set of high-grade cards. Give me that full set every day over one card. As for the 1973 Clemente being a 10, I always ask who submitted it. If you or I submitted it, no way it’s a 10 because of the back. If a big-money dealer or company submitted it … that’s how a card with obvious flaws gets a 10. Card backs should matter.

My gosh i both love and hate these. I always see the Heritage center section of SCG every issue. I have some of these cards and it is amazing how much one level of grade up or down can effect the value and create a fortune for us poor folks. Then my wife sees it and yells "hey you have this one, and this one. Why aren't we rich?? Well my Gretzgy is graded 88 by SGC a long time ago. Not quite enough for the windfall Same with Clementes. Personally i have always loved the Hunt catalog. If you don't get it, go get it. It's free and beautiful and is great to look at every month. Heritage charges for their catalog. So my question to you and your subscribers is, is it ever ok to re grade? Meaning crack the grade 7 and send it back again or to one of the other companies and shoot for an 8? If you think your card is under graded and you paid less than 100 to grade it, it could be worth the game to move your Mantle from an 8 to a 9.
