Maybe we will get to see her again at the 2018 EAA airventure. I'm not sure if she was repared in time to make it there last year. The a-26 invader is such a beautiful bird to see in person. Some thoughts: The A-26 nose gear rotates about 90 degrees to retract. On extension it swivels to the trail position and locks in place. The strut appears to be hanging loose with no connection to the hydraulic link with the required forward motion to swivel and lock in place. Hydraulic pressure was available to lock the mains and a cockpit hand pump is also available. suspect a broken link or part preventing. down and locked. This is the reason that we were never supposed to ride in the nose on T.O. or landing in the C model. RE the engines, If military engines installed they would be dash 27 or 79s.
@willmartin62636 жыл бұрын
Two of my uncles flew in A-26s in the military. One explained that there's an indicator light that the nose wheel is down, rotated, locked and in position, and if that fails, there's a plexiglass window between the cockpit and the nose wheel well to view the position, though with wear, this becomes frosted to the point of being opaque. Apparently, on many of these planes, they replace that window with sheet metal. I'd recommend a nice, clean, new plexiglass window is worth the investment, with this video as evidence as to why. So, by design, they should have known if there was a problem with the nose wheel before touching down, not that there's a lot they could do about it, except maybe take their time landing tail low, bleeding off speed as long as they can hold the nose up, and crash at a slower speed. It did seem unwise for them to attempt a level (or nose wheel first) landing if they had reason to suspect that the gear was not fully deployed. Glad they made it and the plane is flying again. I hope they test the indicator light and have installed a plexiglass window for viewing the nose wheel position when they repaired the aircraft.

@BitsBeTrippin7 жыл бұрын
That was to let the heavy smoke exit the cockpit
@willmartin62636 жыл бұрын
There's a fuel overflow port on the rear, inboard side of the engine nacelle. The A-26 had a reputation for catching fire when fuel overflows onto the hot nacelle while not in flight (in flight, the wind blows out fire and evaporates fuel, but if the engine is hot and the plane is sitting still, this is a clear and present danger). Choosing to hang out on the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage seems less than thoughtful, or at least not deeply familiar with this aircraft type. You might want to work on emergency drills in the event that this happens again so that everyone relies less on luck to avoid burning to death. That is probably the single most dangerous place to stand on that aircraft in this situation. Far safer to risk a sprained ankle jumping to the ground. Yes, it's tall, but it's not THAT tall.

Why did they wait so long to drop the gear? They should have been down long before landing, unless that was just part of the gear failure. But they really didn't flare the plane either, as the nose wheel slammed hard into the ground before it had a chance to lock. That's just my opinion, though. I'm not a pilot, I don't claim to know everything about planes, and I wasn't there. Just looking at the evidence given by the video.
@chrisburn71783 жыл бұрын
Was there a "post-mortem" on this? Seems odd that the gear was clearly not down and locked, and I'm assuming the indicator in the cockpit would have said so, yet the landing attempt was clearly normal like they didn't know. If they had, I'm guessing they would have tried to keep her weight on the main great as long as possible?
@AirshowStuffVideos3 жыл бұрын
Actually, they knew there was an issue and circled for a while to troubleshoot. It was pretty clear that it likely wouldn't support them on the ground. They waited until other traffic had landed before coming in so as not to foul the runway. As for technique, I have not flown an A-26 before but everyone walked away so I think they did a great job!
@Scarebus_Driver8 жыл бұрын
Anyone know if they knew the gear had an issue prior to landing? Looked like a pretty poor landing if that was the case dropping the Nosewheel straight on rather than holding it off and gently lowering it at much lower speed.Been there and done that hopefully not again..
@TexasKid7478 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, I thought is an excellent landing. I especially liked the immediate efforts to get the rest of the pax/crew out and safe.
@timsavage51398 жыл бұрын
Couple of things..you land the A-26 flat, you don't do a big flare with the nose up. That won't work. Their is a lot of weight on the front of the airplane and when it touches down it has a tendency for the nose to come down. This is not a B-25. You should probably do some research on the particular airplane you are discussing before making an accusation against someone's piloting skills. If you actually see the photos of the landing sequence in slow motion you will see that the nose is being held off and as soon as the mains touch down the momentum is for the nose to come down. Forgive me for being a bit snippy, but two days of internet type rated A-26 pilots is getting a little old. Flying this airplane does not equate to flying a GA airplane.
@gulag1138 жыл бұрын
The Props feather correct?, why where the engines running on landing if they know the gear was broke? It is not my aircraft, so I guess I do not care.
@TexasKid7478 жыл бұрын
The engines were running because they can be rebuilt, props can be replaced. Killing the engines is hollywood stuff and not smart, especially if one needs to make glideslope adjustments or even a go around. I saw dollar signs when the canopies came off too, but same thing applies. Pilot did it perfectly.

I am not second guessing but knowing that the nose gear was spurious at best, would a better option have been to drag the tail for as long as possible to prevent the prop strikes or would that have pre loaded for a more inertial and catastrophic flip? Just curious. I am not savvy please do not rage at me. Just a question that I had.

They could have, but when you have crew or just people in general in the back crew section the best thing to do is keep them as safe as possible, I work with the CAF B-25J "Devil Dog" what we train to do is keep the people safe to any standard we have to.

The A-26 has a laminar flow wing and doesn't glide as well as the B-25 does :) and the pilot did exactly what he needed to do and did it right :)

Of course, that makes perfect sense Catfish. The laminar wing is likely why it is so hard on the nose gear to begin with. Thanks guys.

Yeah our pilot did an amazing job and kept everyone safe, that's all that matters.

+Opposite Catfish who was the pilot on this flight I can't tell from the video

Another video from the day before shows A full stall drop from 15 feet on landing . Was this the cause of the gear fail?

Good landing. I saw the stills and didn't know there was a known potential issue before they landed at that time. That makes the instant response make much more sense. Very professional reaction by the cockpit crew!

I wonder if it would have been a little better if he would have flared more and land on two instead of three

Every second of this is painful, I know it’s not the pilot’s fault though, in fact he did a great job getting everyone on the ground safely and saving the aircraft!

Every landing that you walk away from is a good landing.

Ouch !! I wonder why no flare with the nose high at the beginning, he put it pretty hard on the nose.

Not all airplanes "flare" for landings. This may be one of those. It wasn't "hard landing" that caused it; it was a gear malfunction. All I can say is it's awesome the pilot was ok.

Just so happened that I've been reading up on the A-26s of late. I have an electric r/c model I enjoy and looking for paint schemes for a touch-up. In the history videos, It was mentioned that nose gear failures were too common on the type when introduced into service during the war. Like you, glad it didn't get worse than it did.

You do not flare an A-26.
@whalesong9998 жыл бұрын
I watched an instruction video on YT about flying the A-26 and the commentator did say there is a flare on landing one. But, from all the footage of landings, there were none showing a high angle of attack, most were nearly flat but a flare was present. From what I've seen though, there doesn't seem to be a lot of elevator effect on the landings and the nose drops fairly quickly so the shorter the distance on the nose wheel, the better.

The pilot did an amazing job keeping everyone on board safe, and he landed the A-26 the way it's supposed to be landed
