Just bought a Neo Geo MSV C like suggested. Never tought it could have been accessible price wise! Always wanted to jump in the arcade world and this is a great opportunity. I'm glad you clarified the subject for a lot of us because it is not as easy as buying a video game console.

Great video! It is amazing how cheap some of these are from China! One thing you can run into (not a big problem, but they should be pointing it out when selling them) - often the 1B boards sold on there have one of the Neo-Buf chips bypassed out. But, it doesn't really affect anything tbh. Just the fact it has been repaired. Might order a 1C myself at some point from AliExpress!

That's good to know! Yes, those MV-1Cs are just incredible deals in a world where we can rarely get anything cheap. Keep up the great work with your channel--I linked to it in the video when I talk about the 161-in-1 :D

Yup, this is basically exactly what I did for my setup many years ago. MVS boards have always been super cheap as well as the Chinese Multicarts. The somewhat tricky/expensive part is finding a way to get the game on your TV and interfacing the Joysticks as well as buying the Joysticks. So this cost is a bit misleading as you also have to buy a Supergun and Joystick for the unit which is where things can get a bit pricier. By the time you buy a decent Supergun and the Joystick you are gonna be easily looking at over $200. It's definitely worth it tho as it's an AWESOME setup! Oh, and you also need to already have a way of getting RGB to your TV as well with a lot of the Superguns, so there's that too. Another added expense if you aren't already set up for RGB.

Tiangfeng informed me that v2.0 161-in-1's new revision has all of GadgetUK's fixes applied and all of the capacitors populated. Although you're not guaranteed to get that version when you order, here is the link. The early v2s had a hot-glued cable between the two PCBs inside, but the new/good v2 has a proper JST connector www.aliexpress.com/item/32881430413.html

it's a bit odd that many products built in china have been designed to work ok but then they leave out or replace random components saving couple of cents to make unreliable product that just gives the seller a bad reputation. I wish they'd just built things as they were designed.

Even when this listing sells out, the going price of a Neo Geo MVS 1-slot has hovered between $40-70 for the last 10 years or so, and I've added a bunch of links to similarly priced listings to the comments. The Happ 15 Amp is cheaper now than when I made the video too. Also, my mic's noise gate filter was way off, but I have that fixed already and I promise it won't happen again :D

My MVS MV-1B board just came in the mail today. There were definitely some fixes done to it (some glue and wiring is present on most of the caps near the audio amp), but looks fine. I know a guy locally who has JAMMA cabinets to test on, so that way I can test the board. Can't wait to consolize it!

Welp, looks like I caught the arcade bug. Ordered a 1 slot, multi, put my name on the has preorder, might build a mini gun in the short term; and pulled the trigger on a primal rage arcade pcb, I would always play it at the laundry mat when I was a kid I think mom dumped more quarters in the arcade rather then actually doing laundry. Haha, always thought arcade stuff was to expensive to get into. Thanks for the video smoke!

While I didn't order from this person, I've bought 3 different MV-1Bs off ebay from 3 different sellers, each one worked anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours before developing graphical issues all stemming from the NEO-GRC2. I wa orginially determined to stick with the 1B for its size, but for MVS #4 I went with a 1C. No issues so far! (knock on a woodgrain cmvs).

ATX PSUs weren’t always weak on 5v. The spec has been revised many times over the years. When it was first introduced they typically had a ton of amps on 5v for the same reason arcade machines did... because that’s what systems needed back then and ATX was just adapting AT. AT PSUs also typically have a lot of amps on 5v.
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
On paper they'll rate them at 5V 30A but then they'll fail to power boards that even need 2-3A. They're junk and have no place powering arcade equipment. Believe me, I've seen this countless times. My first question when people have a problem is "what PSU do you have?" and they almost always have either an ATX PSU or laptop brick that is causing their problems. And there's the issue of audio and video noise that they introduce.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 5 жыл бұрын
SmokeMonster Yeah. That’s definitely been the case for the last 20-plus years but I’m talking about before that. It became a big deal in the ’90s when ATX first got revised. The EU standards forced MFGs to switch to noisy PFC PSUs and ATX+12v was the death knell for proper ATX PSUs with decent 5V output... unless you spent a small fortune on a PC Power and Cooling kilowatt PSU. ;) I think mine cost me $600 in the early 2000s. Definitely wouldn’t put that in a super gun though

O what did I get myself into?!??!? anyway I was hoping to get an HAS Supergun, but they arent taking orders, so I ordered a Parsec, just the bare board is pretty cheap, I will have to build it myself. I think I need only +5V / 12V power supply, dont seem to need -5V. And eventually a 160 in 1 I guess. Wish me luck friends

I got my MV-1FZ and MV-1 for $70 with Samurai Shodown and Samurai Shodown II. The MV-1FZ was tossed in for $30 along with a copy of Samurai Shodown II because it was supposedly broken but I ended up accidentally fixing it just by burning a NeoDiagROM and UniBIOS. Oh yeah: the game just needed to be cleaned. ;) That’s right. The only issue was a dead BIOS that I had already inadvertently fixed with a replacement BIOS before I even started troubleshooting. XD Literally hadn’t even powered it on at the time.

This makes it really tempting to go for a real Neo Geo setup, but it's still a lot of work. So far even in my relatively large 10-system setup I haven't bothered because emulation even on a Wii or a Raspberry Pi seems good enough, and the cost and effort seemed too high for the reward. With great flashcarts now available I think I would prefer to spend extra on a plug-and-play consolized solution if I do decide to go for the real thing. Anyway, cool video and cool cat entertaining himself.
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, MVS does emulate nicely too. I'd avoid those consolized MVS like the plague though, they're junk and they will limit you to just MVS instead of opening up the world of arcade gaming like a nice supergun.

And I'm telling ya, the problems with the 161 in 1 carts are completely overblown. Yes, there are slight audio issues here and there and the rare graphical glitch, but they are rather minor and really not that big a deal. I have had very few issues with mine. Seriously, the issues are overblown and I wouldn't concern yourself with it if you're on a budget. Besides, there are some relative easy fixes if you're handy with a soldering iron.

I was very sad to find out that Garou: Mark of the Wolves is broken on the 161-in-1 (and in more ways that most people know about, but I imagine this is because very few people are playing the game competitively on this particular cart who can uncover all the bugs). So, I was just wondering: on ali there are a lot of these 2 player Pandora arde stick systems (Pandora box based with joysticks and bottons etc.). How hard would it be to put a MVS in there? I can imagine it will be difficult to fit it (so perhaps a jamma lead is required). But otherwise it may be a very cheap solution to have a MVS outputting trough HDMI (!!) and have joystick input.....

Everyone should be aware that any MVS pcb coming out of China is likely to be a bootleg board, particularly the mv-1c. I have not heard any complaints of the bootlegs quality or do I have experience with them, but at the very least be aware of what you are buying.
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
That's not true at all. I wouldn't be directing anyone these if they were likely to be bootlegs. The MVS was too common to be cloned en masse and no one has ever gotten a clone motherboard from these sellers. Game bootlegs are common of course, but motherboard clones are quite rare and there is no risk of getting a bootleg. The whole point is that REAL MVS hardware is cheap.

@@8bit596 Yeah, I have heard that the condition varies greatly with these, and there is a chance that some boards will have been repaired or damaged. Hopefully with the price people don't expect perfection. My MV-1C was pristine and came from a Chinese seller, so it's probably hit or miss.

Jackafur Gabbiani , no its not subjective, there is a consensus about best games in console , In fact the 138 shares most of the 161 games but with the addition of some classics and remove some hacks.

138-in-1 is no longer in production I believe. It did have a few games that the 161 doesn't and I wish I'd bought one when they were still being sold.

Alright I'm a newbie when it comes to the neo geo. I know they make an AES,MVS and CD a CDZ and cartridge form. Ive been looking into Neo Geo arcade stick and then there's a mod to ad a bunch of games. But now I see your video and I don't fully understand (forgive me im not technical at all) and your telling me i can buy this thing (motherboard) for 40-75 bucks plug it in and buy a 1-161 cartridge and play games just like that? Or am I missing something? If I need extra parts or add ons I would have no idea how to do that or have the skills to get it done. Anyway to clarify exactly what I would need to do after I purchase one of these. And wordt case scenario would you be able to sell me one thats ready to go if I payed you a fee to have it 100% put together??? Ive been dieing to play the neo geo but these prices are LUDICROUS. Pkease get back to me I'd love to know if it's that easy thank you in advance

Any good options for Sega Saturn controllers on Neo Geo? That's one thing that makes me lean towards C-Box as a budget Neo Geo.

RGB sells them for the HAS, and I think Frank might be making them for the Sentinel. But I don't think there are any good sources for those otherwise.

@@BeyondEntertainment_ I think the HAS is about $200, and you can add option Saturn adapters for about $30 each. Pricey for sure, but a good investment if you're getting into the arcade hobby.

So my one question is are there any FAQ's on how to use those HAPP 15 Amp power supplies and how to get the power from the wall? I am not an electrical engineer and would like to know how this works as I see there is no standard plug in for a standard power cable on these things.

So, I recall from my childhood in magazines and in arcades hearing about a Supergun. Is this the same/similar thing from back in the early 90’s or did people reuse the name for these?

Call me lazy, but is there any Super gun equipped with HDMI output ? Just asking ......
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
No, since that would require adding an entire OSSC to the supergun, since arcade boards are all over the place with RGB/S and there can't really be an easy solution to it. There are digital HDMI mods for MVS though.

Does audio pass thou the jamma to the super gun? Im fine if it's mono. Using a framemiester so everything needs to be in the scart cable right? I read that the consolized mvs has a bunch of mods and fixes. Are there any reccemended or does most superguns nowaday's do most of the work? I need some info about pgm attached to the supergun. Does it need any mods also? It's a shame that the MiSTer has a issue of not having enough ram for the bigger games. Hope bigger ram size comes out or a coding breakthrou. Atleast furtek is also working on neogeo cd which will all work but it's still missing some. A new alpha came out recently sadly it's a lite version so rgb only for now. There has been hdmi versions compiled before and posted on discord before.
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will pass mono from the board, but just make sure it's not speaker level audio before plugging it into something like a Framemeister! No, avoid those consolized MVS like the plague and just grab a nice supergun. Yes, Furrtek will have Neo Geo covered in MiSTer eventually and that will be awesome :D

On AliExpress there's "Supergun v1.0" with 12v input and Sega Saturn controller ports for about $60, but is this dangerous for my OSSC? It seems like the only upgrade from this is one that costs $200. That's a bit pricey for me =/ it has all the switches and dials for RGB and stuff

I just got my 161 in 1 in the mail a couple days ago. I compared it to GadgetUK's video and the boards are completely different - I can't tell whether or not it needs to be fixed. Is it safe to test?
@SmokeMonster
@SmokeMonster 5 жыл бұрын
If you just got one, you don't need to do any of Gadget's mods. There is a new v2 161-in-1 that has all of his fixes applied and a fully populated PCB (all caps and voltage regulators). You can tell if it's the newest one because the cable connecting the two PCBs inside is socketed instead of being hot glued in place.

A word of warning though. There are a LOT of clone MVS units being sold on sites like Aliexpress, so be damn sure to do board comparisons from the pics. Look up some pics online of the official model board you are buying and compare the pics to the actual board you are buying to make sure they are identical. If not then chances are it's a clone board.

Why don’t you people put the Neo Geo library on sd cards and sell them to people who is unfortunate to download the games. I have the neo sd flash cart pro and it’s going to waste because I can’t get the games. People are modding ps1 classic,snes mini and the sega genesis selling sd cards with games already downloaded. But for some reason when it comes to NeoGeo nobody selling sd cards with games already on or saying anything about it and I’m really getting pissed off I’m not buying no expensive NeoGeo library definitely out of the question. Nobody’s even coming after you for doing so I just want the games and the easy access to play the games. Die hard NeoGeo fan hopefully someone will understand.
