Just bought a Neo Geo MSV C like suggested. Never tought it could have been accessible price wise! Always wanted to jump in the arcade world and this is a great opportunity. I'm glad you clarified the subject for a lot of us because it is not as easy as buying a video game console.

Great video! It is amazing how cheap some of these are from China! One thing you can run into (not a big problem, but they should be pointing it out when selling them) - often the 1B boards sold on there have one of the Neo-Buf chips bypassed out. But, it doesn't really affect anything tbh. Just the fact it has been repaired. Might order a 1C myself at some point from AliExpress!

That's good to know! Yes, those MV-1Cs are just incredible deals in a world where we can rarely get anything cheap. Keep up the great work with your channel--I linked to it in the video when I talk about the 161-in-1 :D
@skins4thewin5 жыл бұрын
Yup, this is basically exactly what I did for my setup many years ago. MVS boards have always been super cheap as well as the Chinese Multicarts. The somewhat tricky/expensive part is finding a way to get the game on your TV and interfacing the Joysticks as well as buying the Joysticks. So this cost is a bit misleading as you also have to buy a Supergun and Joystick for the unit which is where things can get a bit pricier. By the time you buy a decent Supergun and the Joystick you are gonna be easily looking at over $200. It's definitely worth it tho as it's an AWESOME setup! Oh, and you also need to already have a way of getting RGB to your TV as well with a lot of the Superguns, so there's that too. Another added expense if you aren't already set up for RGB.

it's a bit odd that many products built in china have been designed to work ok but then they leave out or replace random components saving couple of cents to make unreliable product that just gives the seller a bad reputation. I wish they'd just built things as they were designed.

Even when this listing sells out, the going price of a Neo Geo MVS 1-slot has hovered between $40-70 for the last 10 years or so, and I've added a bunch of links to similarly priced listings to the comments. ATX PSUs weren’t always weak on 5v. The spec has been revised many times over the years. When it was first introduced they typically had a ton of amps on 5v for the same reason arcade machines did... because that’s what systems needed back then and ATX was just adapting AT. AT PSUs also typically have a lot of amps on 5v.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
On paper they'll rate them at 5V 30A but then they'll fail to power boards that even need 2-3A. They're junk and have no place powering arcade equipment. Believe me, I've seen this countless times. My first question when people have a problem is "what PSU do you have?" and they almost always have either an ATX PSU or laptop brick that is causing their problems. And there's the issue of audio and video noise that they introduce.
@emmettturner94525 жыл бұрын
SmokeMonster Yeah. That’s definitely been the case for the last 20-plus years but I’m talking about before that. It became a big deal in the ’90s when ATX first got revised. The EU standards forced MFGs to switch to noisy PFC PSUs and ATX+12v was the death knell for proper ATX PSUs with decent 5V output... unless you spent a small fortune on a PC Power and Cooling kilowatt PSU. ;) I think mine cost me $600 in the early 2000s. Definitely wouldn’t put that in a super gun though

This makes it really tempting to go for a real Neo Geo setup, but it's still a lot of work. So far even in my relatively large 10-system setup I haven't bothered because emulation even on a Wii or a Raspberry Pi seems good enough, and the cost and effort seemed too high for the reward. With great flashcarts now available I think I would prefer to spend extra on a plug-and-play consolized solution if I do decide to go for the real thing. Anyway, cool video and cool cat entertaining himself.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын

You just have to understand what's dangerous. Any supergun with speaker level audio and/or out of spec TTL sync can be dangerous. The ones I listed are all fully buffered/attenuated, and have re-generated sync, so they're safe. This is what I refer to as a modern supergun vs a pass-through type.

Everyone should be aware that any MVS pcb coming out of China is likely to be a bootleg board, particularly the mv-1c. I have not heard any complaints of the bootlegs quality or do I have experience with them, but at the very least be aware of what you are buying.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
That's not true at all. I wouldn't be directing anyone these if they were likely to be bootlegs. The MVS was too common to be cloned en masse and no one has ever gotten a clone motherboard from these sellers. Game bootlegs are common of course, but motherboard clones are quite rare and there is no risk of getting a bootleg. The whole point is that REAL MVS hardware is cheap.

Call me lazy, but is there any Super gun equipped with HDMI output ? Just asking ......
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
No, since that would require adding an entire OSSC to the supergun, since arcade boards are all over the place with RGB/S and there can't really be an easy solution to it. There are digital HDMI mods for MVS though.

Does audio pass thou the jamma to the super gun? Im fine if it's mono. Using a framemiester so everything needs to be in the scart cable right? I read that the consolized mvs has a bunch of mods and fixes. Are there any reccemended or does most superguns nowaday's do most of the work? I need some info about pgm attached to the supergun. Does it need any mods also? It's a shame that the MiSTer has a issue of not having enough ram for the bigger games. Hope bigger ram size comes out or a coding breakthrou. Atleast furtek is also working on neogeo cd which will all work but it's still missing some. A new alpha came out recently sadly it's a lite version so rgb only for now. There has been hdmi versions compiled before and posted on discord before.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will pass mono from the board, but just make sure it's not speaker level audio before plugging it into something like a Framemeister! No, avoid those consolized MVS like the plague and just grab a nice supergun. Yes, Furrtek will have Neo Geo covered in MiSTer eventually and that will be awesome :D

So if I buy an mv1c and a supergun, I'm ready to play? I have an OSSC. Do I need a "uni bios" ? Not sure what that is heh. I'm a noob trying to play shoot em ups at home
@ShamanNoodles3 жыл бұрын
On AliExpress there's "Supergun v1.0" with 12v input and Sega Saturn controller ports for about $60, but is this dangerous for my OSSC? It seems like the only upgrade from this is one that costs $200. That's a bit pricey for me =/ it has all the switches and dials for RGB and stuff

I just got my 161 in 1 in the mail a couple days ago. I compared it to GadgetUK's video and the boards are completely different - I can't tell whether or not it needs to be fixed. Is it safe to test?
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
If you just got one, you don't need to do any of Gadget's mods. There is a new v2 161-in-1 that has all of his fixes applied and a fully populated PCB (all caps and voltage regulators). You can tell if it's the newest one because the cable connecting the two PCBs inside is socketed instead of being hot glued in place.

I wonder if those AliExpress listings are clones.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
No, they're real. While the MVS was cloned back in the mid '90s (SNK shut them down fast apparently), they're pretty uncommon and there's no real chance of getting one of those from current sellers.
@V1C10US5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 161-in-one is a POS, but it's by far the best deal to get a lot of great games. I've been selling my legit MVS carts off because my 161 cart never comes out.

I still have to order and test this but I just made a quick stereo audio mixing board for the mv1a/b following the information online. The figures might need to be adjusted but it should work and allow you to run the thing off just 5v. oshpark.com/shared_projects/Xhxcj1H3. This should make it even cheaper. 5v psu I use. www.arrow.com/en/products/wsu050-4000-r/triad-magnetics

A word of warning though. There are a LOT of clone MVS units being sold on sites like Aliexpress, so be damn sure to do board comparisons from the pics. Look up some pics online of the official model board you are buying and compare the pics to the actual board you are buying to make sure they are identical. If not then chances are it's a clone board.
@SmokeMonster5 жыл бұрын
Clone MVS are extremely rare and there's no chance of getting one from these sellers. These Chinese sellers are who we've been buying our 1-slots from for about 10 years .

Why don’t you people put the Neo Geo library on sd cards and sell them to people who is unfortunate to download the games. I have the neo sd flash cart pro and it’s going to waste because I can’t get the games. People are modding ps1 classic,snes mini and the sega genesis selling sd cards with games already downloaded. But for some reason when it comes to NeoGeo nobody selling sd cards with games already on or saying anything about it and I’m really getting pissed off I’m not buying no expensive NeoGeo library definitely out of the question. Nobody’s even coming after you for doing so I just want the games and the easy access to play the games. Die hard NeoGeo fan hopefully someone will understand.
