a full mister set cost about 600$ here in europe ... without the shipping cost !! So i bought an Analog Pocket + Dock for cheaper price ... and i can even play handled !! when docked on my LG OLED, i use Trinitron effect to have a nice rendering. The only little default of this setup is loading time. it can take about a minute for the bigger title like Metal Slug 3 or Kof 2k3 ! and i almost forgot to speak about the Joypad... the 8bitDo SNK joypad, is a pure beauty to complet my setup. Gorgeous !

Five years later and you were right about snowball effect in Mister development. You and NML32 were about the only KZbinrs covering the Mister back then and your early coverage sold me immediately on the project. Anyone else remember having to convert the arcade roms manually? 😊

To think, a dream pc gaming setup from the mid 90s so easily recreated with modern technology, for a fraction of the original cost. Long live FPGA projects.

Yeah, it is easy to be critical of Apple II graphics and games because they lack the bells and whistles of modern games. Hard to believe even young kids would be entertained by any of them. But, like in the days when people didn't have indoor plumbing, it was as game changer to have running water inside the home and indoor toilet. Back when the Apple II came out, no other micro computer had any form of graphics, so it was a game changer despite how crude and boring it looks by today's standards. Prior to that, any type of graphics were on computers that cost 100s of thousand or millions. Arcade games had specialized hardware that were tweeked to play one game, and cost at least a few thousand. I think Steve Wozniak did a pretty good job at creating the Apple II hardware\software pretty much by himself without a team of engineers and a few million in funding.

I had one of these as a kid and I remember mostly using it to play Rayman, though I do also seem to remember using it for some early GameBoy and NES emulation after I had discovered the world of console emulation. No idea what ever ended up happening to the gamepad, though. I haven't seen it in a really long time; might have gone in a yardsale at some point. Cool video! Thanks for covering this peripheral. I didn't even remember what the packaging looked like haha.

I was around for the end of floppy disks and still love CDs abd DVDs but i haven't used or know anything about the laser disks. Was having a side A and side B like a vinyl record similar to this?
@SmokeMonster

Yes, precisely. It's very similar to a vinyl record because that's what people would have been familiar with. The disc is also the same size as a record, and so are the sleeves.

I would have designed this to have two laser assemblies for reliability. Without reading up I am 99% sure this is what failed first on these models. Obviously that would cost more, but I wonder how many of these had to be serviced under warranty back in the day.

I own 4 players and the laser is not an issue. All 4 are autoreverse or autoflip. Pioneer Players tend to have belt issues over time that either need to be replaced or clean. I'm sure Panasonic might have same issues but I haven't ran into that issue on any of my Panny players. It's always the Pioneer Players that have that issue but that's probably because Pioneer was a more popular brand. Panasonic made some nice players and the benefit of Panasonic is that their players usually are on the lighter side. Some of the Pioneer Players can get pretty heavy. I believe my Pioneer CLD-3080 is pretty heavy. Probably around 25-30 pounds.

Yup I have a Pioneer CLD-D701 and the loading belt can be an issue, tray won’t open, needs to be encouraged or obviously replaced/lubed but never ever had laser issues.

It appears to be an LX-900 which is one of the best players with the exception it cuts off about 5 percent of the right side of the screen. Did you really need to do much maintenance with this one? I have a like new version of this which came with the original box and haven't had any issues with it. The only players I've had to do maintenance on are my Pioneer Players CLD-99, CLD-53, and CLD-3080. I head to clean the belt on all three Pioneer Players because the players wouldn't eject quickly and in some cases side B wouldn't read until I did that with the Pioneer Players. Also, I understand this format pretty well. Panasonic was better at hiding the clv smearing and most Pioneer Players suffer from clv smearing even the top of the end CLD-99 which is considered one of the best Pioneer Players released in North America. The Panasonic LX-900 in comparison has little to no clv smearing from my tests. If you head over to the lddb forum and go to the screenshots topic you'll see me comparing laserdisc players. Colors are slightly different too but would have to be played at same time to know any difference. I don't know which one has the more accurate colors. If Pioneer or Panasonic was better with colors but it's only slightly different shades.
