I enjoyed your review a lot even though I've had a different experience (a positive one) with the LCD-5. However I enjoy fiddling with the electronics (dacs and amps) so totally get the I just want all my music to sound good regardless of the electronics and headphones. Anyways the 5 for me are smoother than my other headphones and I find myself getting lost in the music more than I do with something like the 1266 which is more lively and at times too in your face. With EQ the 5's can be made more fun for pop/electronic stuff by increasing the bass but I like the stock tuning. The system I've enjoyed the LCD-5 on the most is Bricasti MC1 -> Flux Volot. Thanks for the review, it was an entertaining 30 minutes.

Well, I agree with you on the tonality stock but I don't believe in being force fed a preference on tone. I appreciate the effort, but I don't believe in or have the money and space to have more than one hp in rotation. So, I take a stance on highest detail first and foremost and tweak the tone to taste. Headphones should sound good with every genre with the highest level of detail possible to me. What is sad, is many didn't take the time or bothered with eq them and went missing out. Ten months later and I am proud to say I absolutely love these with Mitch's convolution filters and I am glad I invested in them. They truly scale to an experience where I have to force myself to take them off. I recommend anyone considering these that aren't allergic to eq to try these on a decent amp like a GSX-mini with Resolve's V2, Oratory or Crinacle's preset. If you have another $200 to spare, get the convolution filters and be at end game with me.

I feel like my time trying these at CamJam 2021 was just colored due to the wait I had go through and the fact that it was the first headphone I listened to. I do remember the low bass and the amazing feel of the finish and lightness. In the end I came away more impressed of the Empyrean Elite and DCA Stealth. Speaking of, I REALLY hope someone will do a video on their thoughts on the DCA Stealth. I hope you get your hands on them one of these days Zeos!

Good to see you pop in Lord Halgaard, I’ve always enjoyed your reviews very much! I have the HEKSE now, which to my ears is a perfect marriage of technicality and musicality. I enjoyed Z’s review as well, as it seems he’s one of only a couple of reviewers who haven’t got complete nuts over the LCD 5 so far. Id like to hear a pair, but it sounds like it may be more technicality than musicality in the case of the 5.

What he's basically saying is, these headphones are for Mastering Engineers, and only Mastering Engineers, who want to hear every detail of a song so they can master it properly. These are not "Musical" headphones to have fun with. They will tell you everything about a song, good or bad, and some may or may not like that.

I think they're reference, and if you want a reference experience, the LCD 5 is perfect reference. But if you want a bassy fun experience, these aren't that headphone. I enjoyed them with the full knowledge that I was listening to a great headphone to mix on (for an open back), but not for casual listening. They are great for jazz and high quality recordings.

@@michaelp.3485 Audio quality isn't supposed to be something you are force yourself to like or listen to. LCD-5 is tuned badly with an enormous shouty nose between 2-4k and is only listenable with lots of EQ. It is not neutral or balanced and OTB is quite hostile to most music with a full instrument ensemble. If something doesn't sound enjoyable to listen to you can just rationalize it with statements about "reference" and "accuracy" or you can get headphones that don't sound bad.

My perception of life and sound is skewed because I'm an audio producer as well as audiophile, so the detail is vital. I have tried the Elites, and they just don't cut it. The lcd 5 with EQ is next level, and when you add Xbass from the Ican Pro Sig, it melts your brain. Soundstage is just big enough for me not to be mad at it. Overall, I'd say a seriously solid headphone. But again, I may be into the overly heavy clinical sound as I mix and master on headphones.

They are bass monster, in that it has the most detailed bass response on the planet. Problem is that Zeos chain is shit, especially his DAC's, not even touching on interconnects. @@mariodrv - While a DAC can increase resolution, it does not give more bass. Interconnects - from cheap to mid-fi maybe ever so slightly, but if you are implying that his chain is shit from the interconnects, then you're simply smoking crack. From the cheapest to a competent sure, there may be a slight improvement, but anything above that is miniscule. Perhaps he didn't have a good seal, but he did try just about every amp he had. I asked him on the Paetron chat to try tubes. However, to Zeos point, these headphones don't work on everything. This is similar to the Susvara, you have to build to that specifically. The take-away for the majority of Zeos audience is if you are looking to invest $4500 into a headphone this one you will have match very specifically to get a good sound where as the Meze Elite sound good on everything.

We all know that the refence liner target is the best to listen to details . And for that we need to loose the bass. Problem is that music is recorded according to all instruments being in balance with eachother . In a rock track in 2021 to 22. All producers track guitars with a flat refence .and the bass guitar does the jib in the same level as the drums snare and kicks. So lowering the low frequency to give the mids a better reproduction on music is fine when you listen to acoustic ,classical and vocal tracks, that's it. Once the bass goes up it destroys the mids, but that's the point to have music in a balance that should be there. This headphones are good for who likes this type of music. You want to listen to different type. Forget it. Choose other set .

The greatest shame of Drop products is that you want to buy something from an EU company, produced entirely in the EU, as an EU citizen, but... you simply can't. The back-and-forth shipping, import fees and customs duties more than double the price, if you even manage to have it delivered to you in the first place, which can be quite a challenge with the likes of Drop.

@@Miguel_Sanchez69 Well that's quite a bit for a 190€ product, but I'm worried about how it's going to scale with price when you get to 1000€. Customs may be handled quite differently in each country, but ever since the free import of cheap items from China ended, they've been extremely careful and brutal here. You wait two months for them to even deal with your package and then they charge you a ton of money for a worthless service. Honestly, it's such a stupid scam. You shouldn't pay customs on EU products anyways, regardless of who the retailer is.

I listened to these on a 50k DCS Lina stack and was not impressed either. I totally agree with your assessment of this headphone. It needs serious EQ to bring up the lower end and even then it sounds totally sterile and lifeless despite all the detail you get. Every headphone is a compromise with trade offs involved. LCD-5s are an ultra-revealing, luxury listening audiophile headphone. In my experience, virtually all of my well recorded / mixed /mastered / pressed recordings will sound better than ever on them. But because they are so revealing, they will not make bad sounding recordings sound better. They’ll usually sound worse. The Xs will make just about everything sound good but you’ll be missing details the 5s reveal.

I get where Zeos is coming from but in the end its all subjective. I really am enjoying the LCD 5 after adding a bass shelf and slightly lowering the highs. Mids are the best I ever heard period. I mean Zeos loves the HD8xx with the Dekoni Fenestrated sheepskin pads and I own the 8XX and bought those pads because of Zeos's review of them and honestly I cannot like them as such. I have to EQ the shit out of the HD8xx with stock pads to make them good.. in the end like I said its all subjective but to me the LCD 5 are not as bad out of the box like he has described them but that is me. All good in the end! I am curious of the Diana TC.. hopefully we see that review soon.
