There is something so comforting about those old radio dials on the classic turners. The illumination in a dark room, listening to radio brings up warm feelings like sitting in front of the Christmas tree lights.

Eico was another kit maker, along with Dynaco and Heath among others. Love seeing the old stereo equipment. Thanks, Chris

My first system when I went off to college (1967) was a Dynaco 8 watt amp that a friend of my fathers built, my dads Garrard turntable and a pair of Koss liquid filled headphones. Hi-end for a college student back then. Fun to see all those beautiful tube sets.

On the unit with the blown cap, you better get that electrolyte out of that unit before it starts to corrode everything. Also, if you just look at vintage stereo equipment on eBay you will run across many brands that you have not heard of, including Eico.

Heh. That Kenwood turntable is similar to the one I bought around 1978. A KD-500 with an ADC LMF II tonearm. I was a salesman at the time and got it all half price. I also built that Dynaco amp in the Crazy Eddie ad (but mine came without the meters) and the Pat-5 pre-amp (in the ad as well.) The Kenwood is still my main TT and still uses the ADC ZLM cartridge that I originally bought for it.

I own and use Citation II amp and a Pas 3 preamp built my deceased Micheal Fraser of Los Angeles. The Citation has wonderful output transformers but the amp is using 6 volt TV tubes for the input stage which seriously limits the performance of what could have been a classic amplifier . Micheal Fraser tears all that out and installs a classic Herbert Keroes from the 50's ultra-linear circuit from the 50's. He does the same with the Pas-3. I have been listening to this equipment and with a current LINN LP12 and LINN speakers to this day. Micheal Fraser was the best tube expert out there

I really liked what I heard from that amp that day, definitely rivals modern high end designs.

Good on him, wise choice on keeping the Deuce (Cit II amp) and the Citation 1 preamp..

Just a minor correction in that those are GEC valves and not GSC (though not immediately apparent perhaps from the script they use). I’m certainly no expert on valves but used to live not too far away from GEC near Manchester, England, UK.

Reasonably certain the Marantz 22 is solid state, not tubed. I don't think Marantz made any tubed receivers, only tubed power amps.

Looks like a "portable" tube tester arouns 14:00 in. I used to work at a Lafayette Radio store in the late 70s and old dudes would come in with a box of tubes to test for hi-fi and TV repair use.

Lots of nice gear. 😎 As someone already mentioned, I'd get that old blown electrolytic cap out of there and scrub the residue off the PCB before it corrodes anything. Then he should be able to look at the values marked on the side & a suitable replacement to get it back up & running. 👍 As far as the tube tester, just look here on KZbin.. Lots of videos covering this. As they say, "a picture says a thousand words". ;-)

A little DeoxIT and some rust remover. Maybe some capacitor replacement. Knob caps for that Fisher can be had with some patience. An amazing haul. I'm inspired to start doing some refurbishing myself in '23

I think some of the really nice pieces may end up getting professional refurb. And a few of the beat up examples might get sold for parts. However some of those Dynacos and the like are great first restoration projects, and I would love to try my hand at that someday when I have a little more free time.

@@poetryonplastic Same here. I need a bench and an oscilloscope. I’m handy with a soldering iron and everything else. But it takes time and space to open up boards and replace capacitors and whatnot. I am going to do a video at HardOff in Okayama. Their “junk” section is amazing. Dozens of every type of audio component and drawers of tubes, cables and parts.

what are you looking to get out of "one" of the "Citation -I's" ? -as I am guessing you'd like to keep the nicest unit to pair with your Citation II amp...

While I'm not positive and without searching, that Sound Analyzer from Scott sounds like one of their products that deals with the wide variety of EQ curves present among 78rpm discs. A lot of their top stuff from the 50s had that in mind. In fact, a lot of the amplifiers in this are on my wish list for a system I'm building to play specifically 78rpm records (particularly those Citations which are my holy grail right now). I would guess that this guy had a big 78 collection since it appears that most of his stuff revolves around it. That SL-1015 looks to be just a rebranded SP-15 which is a top turntable for 78s (and in fact I have one coming to me through the mail sometime today!)
@poetryonplastic
@poetryonplastic Жыл бұрын
Yes looking it up after the fact, it is essentially an SP-15

The Technics SL-1015 is a professional turntable system comprising the SP-15 motor unit, SH-15B1 plinth and EPA-500 tonearm.
@MrRom92DAW
@MrRom92DAW Жыл бұрын
I’m not super familiar with the SL-1015, but I can tell you that is definitely an SP-15 in there. I guess the 1015 was a “complete” package with plinth and tonearm, similar to what the SL-1000 was to the SP-10. Still a very, very good turntable, very close to the beast that is the SP-10! I hear they can have some problematic ICs these days though. I am not a tube expert either but I believe the tubes in the VTL amp are 300B’s. AFAIK those are supposed to be the tube to end all tubes, or something along those lines.

It's a big reason why I stopped "collecting" gear, gear should be listened to. If it's not being listened to I try and get it off to someone who will be listening to it.
