The Sound of Animals Fighting is such a good band! Also, I feel like 80% of Glassjaw's discog defined post-hardcore. FUCK YEAH MANIPULTOR RULES!!!!!!!! I listened to manipulator more than any other album by them, I still don't regret it. Hell, I still listen to it now. Fear Before the March of Flames is so good, especially The Always Open Mouth, and Drowning the Old Hag has to be my favorite song from them. Awesome picks, would have picked maybe 1 or 2 things different but still amazing.

I’m flattered you found and enjoyed this (now very very old and slightly embarrassing) video. The stuff you did with DGD was peak for the band for me. Also enjoyed your set last year at kill iconic!

What mofi did do isnt as bad as what they didnt do. They didnt press more records (they could have since they were using DSDs.) They could have publicized how good digital mastering can sound. They could have done 100 things but they kept quiet and weren't transparent. Thats where my frustration with them comes from

I am thinking of buying a pair of Harbeths myself this summer. But my current horn based system challenges this thinking all the time.

Today, haven't we moved beyond 24bit 88khz (the 88 being an odd sample rate) to 24-96 and 24-192 that can downloaded legally from multiple sites for less than SACDs? I get that was the play 5 years ago, but if you have a decent DAC, downloading FLACs at 24-192 are what audiophiles are using these days.

Excellent thanks! I think I'll email Jon. My only other realistic option is to find a phono stage that has good synergy with my Rega P8/Apheta 2 cart under £2000. I have just a handful of mono records but want to build my collection

Thank you for your ideas. I think your ideas would have greater credibility if you were more "scientific" in your analysis. Perhaps, if we cleaned both versions, and your were blind to which record I played, your bias would be revealed (potentially). Also, if you actually examined the sound quality in your actual videos (and not just give your opinion), you would have greater success in influencing the listener. Take some time and play the recordings as you speak on them.

Wow, this was 2 years ago? I only just found out about this, but Oppo SACD players are extinct and I had never heard of them before apart from their smartphones. Instead, I have been using Denon for SACD, other brands include Marantz and Esoteric which is more high end, however none of them have HDMI out.

You're completely missing the point of the "Post-Hardcore" label. Refused were a hardcore band in the present tense. No one would have ever dreamed of calling their Victory Records releases "Post-Hardcore" and aside from a few samples and sound bites the style on "Shape of" is a fluid continuation of the "Everlasting" EP. This is frankly insulting! If you look at the LATER Fugazi albums you can begin to grasp how the term originated... as the music became more abstract and harder to classify as "Punk." "Repeater" while great is NOT a "Post-Hardcore" album. "Post-hardcore" was a tongue-in-cheek way to give credit to experimental and mellow indie/emo bands who came from the hardcore scene. Please stop calling modern hardcore bands from the 1990s, 2000s, or whenever "Post-Hardcore". It isn't the same thing!!!

I love DSD because if you attach your line input directly to the DSD bitstream you would still hear the music (although heavily distorted). Try that with PCM bitstream and you will hear white noise. MoFi should just release the DSD master files and not release it on an inferior medium such as vinyl.

This issue has been upfront in my mind for the last 15 years of collecting and have been very suspect of ALL NEW albums. I have watched the explosion of interest records and was very hesitant of buying anything new on vinyl. I focused on finding albums and music I liked from 1985 and earlier. I want to make my own evaluation of a records recording quality and I want to do that knowing what the source is. If it's from a digital source, fine... but make that clear. Did that expose the analog community. I don't think so, I think most audiophiles are not extreme purists and will acknowledge a great SACD version of a recording over a lesser analog version. At the prices records are selling for, they owe us complete transparency of the source and process. Great video, thank you.

All Solomon is good! Inspired by your post I placed an order with her: Monteux conducting Elgar Enigma Variations and Brahms Haydn Variations with the LSO (1965), Munch conducting a program of Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Lalo and Berlioz with the BSO (1955), and Grumiaux’s recording of the Handel Op. 1 violin and keyboard sonatas.

I'm sure you're aware that you can play your SACDs through your outboard DAC by setting the S/PDIF output of your Oppo to PCM instead of using the converter box and the extra HDMI cable. Sure, It won't be 'pure/native DSD' reaching your DAC but more importantly; did you at least compare both methods to see if you can hear a difference? I will take a wager with you that you would not be able to distinguish between the two methods in a blind ABX test.

You sir have a great knowledge. You remind me of me in the mid ‘80’s. Classical record collecting, looking for the rare SAX’s, wide bands, shaded dogs etc. Your videos are very informative and very correct! Eventually I got married and got kids who loved my records a frizbees so I had to sell the lot and went streaming so it was so nice to see you with your collection. Keep up the videos they are so nostalgic for me to see!!! BTW keep a look out for the wide band decca Wagner ring cycle worth hunting for!!

“Tape is not an audiophile medium” then you haven’t heard the right tape deck. You’re still young hopefully you’ll get an opportunity day. Reel to reel tape is the mother source of most recordings. That’s the most used medium to produce your very own vinyl. And with any luck you’ll come across the right cassette deck.

Utterly delighted to see a new video from you - the first of many, I'm sure! What a lovely tribute, and what a stellar selection of records you showed. Yup, there's just something about those silver/light blue first Columbia first pressings, although the second "magic note" label is often as good or better. So happy to see you've got that Shostakovich set which I bought when it came out (that's how old I am....) - has been a prized possession ever since. You may remember I showed it on my contest entry for your channel - first video I ever made I think. I love the EMI/Melodiya records - essential for any lover of Russian music. So curious about that Block concerto - and that record. Looking forward to chatting on our next Classical Bums stream - whenever that turns out to be. Enjoy those OS records - and the Gieseking!
