i had took my childhood collection to a dealer and he offered me 80$ for all my vintage cards. he wasn't interested in anything else. one of the nicest cards was a 1960 mantle. i told him the mantle was worth well more then that and he said in a condescending tone he had to make a living and they weren't in perfect shape. i just picked up my cards and walked out. left him a one star review explaining he will rob you if you let him.

@@ozsportscardcollector4720 true...but usually someone that's dropping 7k on a gamble can afford to gamble..but I totally get what you're saying. I've collected since I was 8. I'm 45. Sadly my prizes from growing up were stolen in a move. So I had to rebuild. Lol. Since I can remember I'd buy maybe 2-5 hobby boxes a year. I'd try and hit WM or Target every so often. Now, as the market had changed my habits have changed. I still open, but having to buy secondary, it limits options. Open some blasters, a few hangers, a few cellos. Stash the rest of the unopened product and make sure to have at least 1 hobby box stashed of the product I break. So i have a nice stash of Prizm, Optic & Mosaic....unopened..I'm very choosy as well. People may be able to flip Hoops right now but if the bubble were to burst, people holding standard Hoops and brands like R&S will be lucky to get the money back that they paid for it.

You can spend 30 bucks on a scratcher in my state with a CHANCE of breaking even, being up 20 (if it's a 50 dollar winner) or get super super lucky and hit a ticket worth 500, 1000, and higher....it's just the odds are definitely NOT in your favor to hit it big. Or even to break even. Same with busting wax. Yeah. Ya have a shot, but you're better off holding unopened product and selling several months to 2 years later. No guarantee of profit, but I like the chances.

@@ozsportscardcollector4720 tbh the only reason I'm able to not open them is because they're at my parents house an hour away from where I reside. I'm a collector. I'm no dealer or even flipper. But I know that the stuff I'm stashing is going up in value. And fast. I paid 40 per WM hanger box of Optic. There are sold listings all over ebay for 80. I bought those less than a month ago. Here's a funny story. My boy in NJ has a hookup at a distributor. He was getting Optic FB was 750. My buddy facetimed me and I guided him on what to pick up for himself....he got what I did. An optic hobby and a sealed box of Prizm Cellos. Took the boxes home and said...pick. I still have mine. He broke his in his Facebook room. Pulled a purple Burrow auto /35 (autos are 1 per box) and a Holo Herbert and base Burrow. So it made my decision real easy to keep my box sealed. My box could very well hold a case hit....then again, simply from a statistics standpoint, I doubt it. I'm guessing they came from the same case but there were 4 boxes on the shelf. I have no clue if they're from the same case or not. I learned from opening 2020 Prizm FB that this stuff is worth more closed than opened. You have to get lucky to make any money. Shoot, ya have to get lucky to break even value wise. The amount of Prizm I opened, all totaled, probably around 1200 worth (retail, secondary prices, shortly after release)...now if I'd have sat on just the amount of cellos I opened (over 2 boxes) I'd have made my money back on everything I bought. TODAY. That's how much they've gone up since Dec. And I bought all but the 2 hobby boxes of Prizm on the secondary market. The game has changed. I pulled some pretty nice stuff from what I opened. If the green Hurts I pulled gems at PSA it'll probably be a pop 3 or 4 MAX. Once Preseason rolls around, I could probably get 1200 for it...but it has to gem or I'll get maybe 300.. it's a game, a learning experience and it kinda sucks that a lot of the fun has been sucked out of it.

Man I wish we lived closer together. I have 1-2 million cards and buy collections as well. 60% of the commons I get from collections I donate to local schools for art projects and prizes. Just starting the KZbin journey myself, but have been enjoying the hobby for 30 years.

I was initially thinking they were all junk wax era and I was shocked at first (as big lots like this usually are junk wax 99% of the time), but then it made sense when you showed the breakdown. I think one of the best parts is the dad's change in demeanor. You obviously had a positive impact on his life as well. Going from being cold and unsocial to being willing to drive them 3 hours away to your house. In my opinion that is one of the best parts of collecting cards is the people you meet and swapping stories and obtaining information. Very cool. Keep up the great content. Addiction is a horrible thing, I remember my years working in a card store and there were people basically spending every last cent they had on cards, it was really kinda sad. Now I see it with my current job, people just can't stop ordering things from the internet and I can feel the strain it has in their households from talking with family members. It's shameful how someone can low ball somebody like that. Haven't been able to see many videos lately due to getting back to work but hope to make time. Great story.

I started collecting cards in 1987 and it went until 1993(when I turned 16). Picked it up again for a for short time in 2001. Joined the USMC in 1996 and I retire 31 Aug 2021. Volunteered for one last goofy deployment and got hit by a car; meaning laid up and a lot of KZbin and Netflix...Last thing I needed. I have become obsessed with your channel. I did a very similar deal in LA, like several hundred long boxes of reject comics for like $8 a long box. We paid a few K, loaded our own truck, got into an accident on the way home. The seller was a liquidator of collectible stores in the 90s and with comics, he was either it’s a superhero book or a reject. He would pack up like 5 to 10 random superhero books, put them in polybags and sell them on racks as packs. He would do the same with random baseball cards, put them in a cube with shrink wrap and sell those at retail stores for 10 bucks. Kinda like how Fairfield does it. Anyways we went through the books, they were all independent books...many rarities and expensive items if you knew what it was and the right collector. I believe we wound up over 10x-one our original investment and had cool stuff to sell for years.

I knew from the get-go that this was going to be an addiction thing. The unsorted unsleeved boxes was a dead giveaway. Stuff like this is sad. I sometimes catch myself burning an extra $100 that I shouldn’t on cards but I always catch myself way before it becomes a problem. Focusing on the collecting aspect of it really helps suppress that desire to rip wax. Opening a package from eBay or Facebook that has a PC Card that you got for a good deal is a way better feeling than chasing that big hit ripping packs.

Is the first legit? I know a careful read clarifies - but... the second, never heard of and Kobe isn't named on card.

thx for the new story, Chris...always love listening to these...I have a similar story -- back in 2018 I responded to a Craigslist ad where the title said 100k cards for a quite reasonable price...I responded as soon as I saw it, because it is hard to lose money on a large collection at a low price point...he said someone had already responded but he hadn't heard back from the guy for a day, so I said I would drive down the next day with the cash, and he said okay. I have a Honda CRV and I was only able to get 1/3 of the cards on that first trip, and it took me 2 more trips with the vehicle stuffed each time..my guess is there were close to 500k cards...lots of sets, albums, oddball items, etc...mostly football, basketball and baseball...the owner used to set up at shows...mid-90's Fleer Metal sets, etc...it was heaven going thru all of those boxes over the next couple months...I am still grading some of the cards today...no telling how much I will get out of it, but it will be a lot...

Good Story. Hopefully the gentleman with the addiction issues got the help he needed. I have run across a few cautionary tales like this lately. When I got back into cards a few years ago, I largely avoided modern and packs and thought it was basically akin to gambling. I collect a few modern sets now, but not a lot. It is a lot of fun, but I can see where it would be easy to go from hobbyist to addict. Thanks for the thoughtful video.

I haven’t had any luck with large lots. My terrible-favorite story is going to a Craigslist ad for some guy who had a bunch of sportscards. It was probably around 30,000 cards. He came out with a 1000 count box and said here was his dads personal collection of his favorite university of Michigan quarterback. When I grabbed it it could tell is was loaded. I think my hands were shaking from the excitement from a box full of brady rookies and assortment of cards. It was an incredible box, completely full of autos, jersey cards and rookies.... of Brian Griese. Doh!!!!

Great Story. I caught a Ken Griffey Jr Homerun Ball in 1994 at Royals Stadium, just before the All-Star Break. It was the game winning homerun for the Mariners in the top of the 8th inning. 3-2 Mariners. I got a VHS Tape recording of me catching it from TV 5. My sons and I tried to find Ken at the end of the game to sign it and were unsuccessful. I've had the ball stored in a clear cube with the tape ever since. The Royals pitcher was reliever Edwards. Can't remember his first name. A way to prove it is lie detector test from me and my sons. I think it's the second to the last homer caught before the All-star break and a record breaker at the time and he was on pace to break Roger Maris homerun record, then the strike started in August 1994.

These videos are very entertaining. I used to collect cards many years ago but had stopped. I had an uncle who passed away and left a giant collection to me and I'm still looking through them in my free time 7 years later. I never went to a dealer because I figured I would end up in a similar situation to the $200 offer. It's nice to see an honest dealer who can make a nice profit and not totally rip someone off! I know baseball but my knowledge of card collecting at the time ended sometime around 1993. I made so many mistakes like not understanding what rip cards were and tossed a ton that were unripped in the trash because I knew that the players never made it, but didn't know the card hidden inside could have potentially something great.

I was shocked to see the Lebron just sold 3 days before this video went up on Ebay for $7,701.00. I do not understand letting it go now. I dont know the story behind the sale. You of course made your money on the lot but this Lebron Card is going to be worth $50k one day. I know you cant keep them all but a Lebron Rc #/99 Wow....Great video. I am 47 and have been doing this on the side since 86. I worked at a dealer in college and went to all the shows I could. Now I am happy to see people like you that keep it real. Great story Chris. I finally got a chance to glance at a few boxes from old collection. Turns out I got a crap load of Ripken’s (of course), not to mention some other nice older cards (R. Henderson rookie card). Only wish you lived on this side of the country, so you could assess my collection, and make me a reasonable offer. I don’t trust any dealers in my area, so I’ve held on to them for years (30+). Always thought my son (when I had one) would share my enthusiasm in collecting, but if ain’t Xbox related, he’s not interested. Was hoping to convert the collection into cash, so I could put it into Precious Metals for him. Anyways, enjoyed the story, and will continue to watch, and educate myself on the revived market.

These stories are so great. I really enjoy this... I collected back in 1990, 1991 and there was nothing like cutting a neighbors grass for $20 and walking up the 5 blocks to the the department store that had a card dealer there. I remember the smell the most of opening up 1990 upper deck for a buck a pack... and splurging for a pack of 89 UD hoping for a griffey. I came stopped in 92 when a bunch of brands came out. I got back into it in 2002 once ebay started growing and have been in it off and on since.... what a hobby it is!

Thanks for sharing another great story. These have all been so intriguing and I really enjoy listening to them. You’re always very fair and kind to people and I think that goes a long way. I can definitely see how someone with addiction issues can struggle with card collecting. I think that’s even more true now with group break and “fillers” that are ran all over the internet. The hobby is so crazy right now and it will be interesting to see what the future holds!

@@collectorinvestordealer If I remember correctly the whole reason we have odds on packs is because California sued Upper Deck because of the gambling aspect. It was probably about 1997-98 when game used first came out and inserts were out a couple years.

I recently answered an add for a few thousand baseball cards for $180.. they said they were from the 80s and 90s.. I asked if I could look at them and they said they just wanted to sell them. I never saw the cards and wouldn't be able to figure a value so I passed... I'm not sure what some people are thinking when they list cards for sale..

Thanks for these stories. It has inspired my family to go through our fathers extensive card collection after trying to sell it for years. We had been asking $5k to get someone to just take it. My brother says a million cards, the binders of Griffey's alone were worth more than we were asking. Tons of amazing cards. 1986-2010 basketball, baseball and many others. So lucky no one bought them.

I bought 2 large square tubs at a Thrift shop about 8 years back filled with cards and sports memorabilia. Cards were cataloged by year in boxes , the tubs also contained singed pictures of Bo jackson and several unopened baseball cards in packs. Inside the tubs were also approximately 15 large baseball cards like 5x7, never seen those before. The cards were from late 70s thru the 80s and 90s. I didnt think it would be valuable since they only asked for a $100 I figured they had gone thru it and took out the best...they didnt.

I did this with my cards. I have over 200,000 cards filled in my basement. I spent years just opening cards and putting them into boxes without any top loaders, now I regret that decision none of them will be high grades now
