This video is a perfect example of why i don't understand why this channel doesn't get more traffic. None of this stuff is esoteric, it can be applied to anything! It's also nice to be reminded of practices that need more focus while also confirming the ones that i've already deemed important. Great stuff!

+Hotel 🙏 I don't understand it either... however. I'm trying to live and embody an ethos that makes work despite its' reception. Thanks for the positive feedback (If you can share the video with your people).

Hotel i agree. i've seen somewhat similar ideas Elliot discusses in his videos professed by others, others that get more views. i think the ways in which he presents the information can be a bit jarring, but worth the wait, of course

Hey Elliott - I'm returning to visual work after a ten year hiatus in music. It's funny to find that I'm hitting the same walls I hit as an undergrad at Cooper Union. Specifically the difficulty around the DIFFERENCE between planning work and working on it. BEING in the zone is easy but you can't enter the zone (to forget) without some planning. Can you discuss: Setting up the apparatus in which to operate intuitively... I think back to that eternal sophomore year question: "What SHOULD I make work ABOUT?" It feels like the wrong question because it seems prescriptive, as if you point to a headline and confront it. This could lead the artist down a narcissistic path to conceptual ruin. The logical conclusion for some might be "I guess I have nothing to say." This means the work is ABOUT the artist, rather than BY the artist. The better question is "HOW do I generate ideas that are worthy of execution?" Can you talk about "conceptual planning?" or simply planning work versus execution? Or *strategies for INTUITIVE PLANNING?!* < I like that. My greatest hurdle in art school was "How do I plan work that is worthy of execution?" WITHOUT generating thesis-driven conceptual deskilled *hiding* art that is not fun to look at OR think about... (many of those kids won awards lol) A lotta thoughts here but I feel like just writing this out is getting some things moving. Thanks for the series; it's very unique and helping me a ton.

@@mercysu.6220 Hey - It was not - Reading my own initial (long-winded) comment from 5 years ago is funny. I think I've learned some things since then so maybe I can answer it myself. I stopped caring what anyone thinks / feeling pressure to say something big or political, etc. During the pandemic I got really into tabletop games and kind of doing a deep-dive into things that intrigued me as a child but that I never really got to explore. Fantasy, building wargaming terrain, painting a skeleton army, playing D&D. Hobbies, basically. It kinda hit me like a ton of foam bricks that these things I was genuinely excited about (and sort of ashamed to share if I'm honest) were fertile ground for expanding into my more "serious" artwork. I've since produced and sold a lot of drawings, sculptural wall piece and I'm currently moving into oil painting. There you go. The answer is to produce work based on whatever is actually interesting to you. If you're not passionate about war, you don't have to make dry academic art about war. Hope this helps.

Hi Reagan, Thanks for the comment. There's a deceptively simple book that I assigned to my incoming graduate students. It's a bit self-help, but I think it's quite insightful nonetheless, It's called Art & Fear. Check it.

visiting this video again five years later, I can def credit it to changing the way I make art. And your creed to PRODUCE has kicked my illustrations into gear, the comparison next to great works has been on the back of my mind this whole time too, it's cool to know that idea comes directly from this video. I started reading books more too. This video is so good!!!

Could not agree more, especially #2. It's easy to think you're a big fish in a small pond, but the biggest growth is from comparing yourself to the best. I currently swim in a small pond, but I'm always pushing myself. Do you have any videos where you discuss the pitfalls of getting trapped in technical mastery to the detriment of creativity. I feel like it's easy to do with digital art. Always a new software, feature, and 100000 ways to achieve the same result.

Do you have advice on finding appropriate readings? Also, suggestions/methodologies on how to engage with those readings critically when you find them?

One possible way is to search for course websites of teachers whose work you respect-they might have suggested readings or reading assignments that could act as a starting point.

It's an anthology of editorials, essays, and manifestos from modern artists in the last century. It allows some insight into the minds of these artists, and illustrates some key concepts in modern and contemporary art.
