Hi Elliott - Great to hear from you. All’s well here. Thanks so much for addressing my question! I absolutely love the direction this discussion on the economics of art/design practice took-- it is incalculable! The wood grain chart animation is also a total bonus. Thanks for the kind words on my paintings too. I’ll definitely try out iThoughtsHD. My thoughts are going to be so organized now, look out brain.

+Trygve Faste Yea man. I've been a big fan of your work since the Cranbrook days. Stay strong kid and thanks for the feedback. 🙏🏻

I think this is the best one yet! Both formally and informatively. I tried to write on one of the recent ones, but for some reason couldn't comment from my phone (is that normal? Seems stupid). Anyway, this episode is both funny/entertaining, as well as really applicable. Good work. PS. That signage for the Wasserman Projects is SO DOPE!!!!!!

+WolfgangJohnnyG dude, thanks for the feedback. You're my "frequent collaborator" and in that relationship you keep it 💯. So I appreciate the 👍. You can post on the iPhone I think. Love your comments so TRY again bruh.

Yeah I'm replying on an iPhone right now. I also really like the iPhone notifications for new videos (why I typically reply super fast), way easier to set up than on desktop.

+Benjamin Santiago weird. Doing it from my phone right now, but just couldn't figure it out a couple weeks ago.

Great question @trygvefaste. So true, no one talks about money. Makes one reflect if this is because the underlying unspoken mandate of the institutions are to produce a steady supply of labor, whereby the majority of graduates having financed their pursuit on loans are ultimately indentured servants for at least the next 20 years of their lives, barring a borderline miracle of talent and miraculous timing. If one endeavors long enough they might just cross the transcendent plane into the rarified strata. Regardless, Elliott, I think you made a mistake on your net return, 33% of 15k would be 5k, you should be taking home 10k, before expenses, which leads to the hidden variable in business, write offs and creative accounting strategies. We should have classes in that too! Love your videos Elliott! Cheers!

Love your videos! Started from #1 and going from there. I am curious about what you meant by sophistication, hoping you covered this topic in a video. 12 down, 100+ to go!

Yo… There’s a bunch of different styles of stuff on the channel. More conversational kinda vlog type stuff. Instructional stuff. Very academic stuff. I appreciate that you are watching the channel! If one video does’nt hit for you give the following one a chance (or maybe skip ahead 2 or 3 videos - i tend to mine styles for a run of a few consecutive)

Would artists really agree to assistants getting 50% ? I think they would pay them a fairly low hourly rate
@gourdbox7 ай бұрын
An hourly rate is how the $30k in this example gets whittled down. If you couldn’t create the piece without X hours of labor and the labor was $Y/hour then the labor cost can outweigh the sale price. This is the same as when a Pixar movie flops. Some try to counteract this by offering a percentage to all laborers but you can’t get greet help for the promise of a cut.
@StudioPractice17 ай бұрын
@gourdbox for a wide swath of most/some designers time their labor is effectively free (if they are working for themselves) (or possibly commensurate with minimum wage). At some point after a designer gets “successful” they have to then judge whether they could be making more money by working on a different project. But in someways if/when your monthly cost basis is covered… your labor is free (again, if you are the owner, or self-employed). No?

@@StudioPractice1 agreed. I lazily slipped into my own world of commercial game development where every project is a gambit. It’s been a very long time since I actually thought like an artist. Glad to find your channel

what do you ultimately want people to do? not just artists, anyone, everyone. am i a fool to think it's the same thing as what you want from your art? i'm somehow filled with both great hope and terrible dread after each video, and i am confused
