I had a fire years ago, and as I walked thru with the Fire fighter the next day, he saw I had quite a few big oaks burnt pretty badly. One in particular had the entire bark turn white, the rest were black. He told me, ...that one is a goner. Cut it. It was so big and beautiful, I decided to be patient. It took 2.5 years....looked dead. Then, out came the leaves. In a year, it looked as good as the rest. people don't have the patience. It blew the Fireman away, he could not believe it. :P

@GhoogleBlows Yes, that's what struck me most about the set-up. Rigging means looking at the angles of the lines. A wheeled vehicle that's expected to pull down on a line is like praying for rain to a blue sky. it ain't likely. The vehicle is condemned to pulling its own wheels up, lifting weight off them, and losing traction. The way you do this is with a screw anchor, screwed alll the way down and a block, so that the lead of the line to the vehicle is up to the hitch, not down.
@willowrish8 жыл бұрын
Yes, saw was dull all right, but it looks like he knew the basics. Ford ranger 4 x 4 hooked that high is plenty of pull. I used to do that for a living, but never would have risked a full length drop that close to houses. You never know for sure if you have sound wood where you're cutting that will hold the tree in the intended direction. I can see why that guy was so happy at the end.
@02hreblue302 жыл бұрын
Moronic video. Safety issues and common sense out the window. Bet they didn't even evacuate the other houses. Should have topped the tree first with a commercial truck and the line should be hooked to a much bigger truck and evacuate the houses. Ridiculous

You guys need to learn a thing or two about leverage and weight distribution. Tree is standing relatively straight. Give or take a lean in opposite direction will equate a measily few hundred pounds at most on a gargantuan tree that has gravity pulling it straight DOWN towards the earth on its own self. (Wind not taken into account as felling shouldn't take place in wind). Roping the tree WAY the hell up and attaching it to a truck gives it tremendous force to pull the tree in the proper direction. Combine this with a good notch, back cut, and use of wedges, the tree is has no choice but to go in the direction of the truck... Done this way too many times to know it works like a charm. Arborists and lumberjacks hate seeing DIYer's do this because it means less work for them to rip us off.

Too many houses, too close for comfort. I'm not sure if home owners insurance would cover anything if the tree fell the wrong way. Sorry, I am a do-it-your selfer and have been my whole life. But, I would have paid a licensed, bonded tree company to have that tree removed. In my opinion, tree climbers and/or a boom truck would have been the way to go. I had a 320 year old poplar removed in that manner a few years ago. I didn't want to put my house or my neighbor's house in harms way. -Glad it worked out for you.

@bbigrocker110 жыл бұрын
not unless the tree in a full lean and off balance towards the house, you don't "PULL" the tree down with the truck, you simply change the balance to the desired direction of fall. And if the line is very high in the tree, the mechanical advantage will assure a positive fall.

I like how the old tree stood tall as long as he could, resisting the saw, the wedges, the cables and the truck. When Andrew Jackson was president, he was already enjoying sunshine and stormy weather, summer and winter. But time is no respecter of old age. It takes us all down. I suppose loggers cannot be expected to retain any sense of reverence when pulling down an old guy like that. Even so, the "celebrating" seemed somehow out of place. But that's just me ... at 73.

First the historical society should protect tree like this from builders who do not care. Second the builder should not build a new house next to a almost 200 years old tree. Third the buyer should pass the house if is scared of tree falling. It did not fell in 200 years what make think will fell now? I would be proud to have a tree like that in my back yard.

@@christianpopovici9501 because when contractors build they cause root damage whether feeding roots or support roots. So it might have not fallen in those years proir too but could pose a higher risk now. Plus I would assume that there were other trees that helped protect this tree and now are gone so yet another reason. (Side note) Younger trees produce more oxygen and help with co2 than larger mature trees. Besides that tree showed signs of tip dieback which in a few years would be dead anyway whether human made or natural predators. The real thing you should be outraged by is the lack of ppe worn by the kid.
