After a 3 year solo hiatus & several oddly underwhelming “singles,” Rocky is back with his 3rd studio album appropriately titled TESTING. Each song showcases a different sonic idea that Rocky does his thing over, getting more introspective on the latter half of the project. Since my initial reaction the night of, I have seen many people disappointed with TESTING.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I found a lot of character and artistry in Rocky’s release and have been playing it since the 5/25. It really is a grower and I feel the variety behind the sounds are somewhat hidden that takes more than one listen to appreciate. Also Frank Ocean’s feature on Purity is Italian cook kisses hand
Overall I really enjoyed TESTING and it might end up on my favorites of the year list.

He did mention this is like a way way way suppressed version of what actually noise rap and experimental hip hop artists like Jpegmafia or Deathgrips usually do. Also like a watered down experimentation from Danny Brown. I mean he sure is going out of his way but it's not 'chaos'.

I think I'm the only one who preferred this album over Daytona. I have a ton of respect for Pusha but nothing to me was super exciting about that album, while I feel like a lot of the experimentation in this album works out much more often than not

Nope. There is nothing complex about this album that people can't understand. The beats have a kinda different sound to them, but they are still accessible even to the mainstream. I don't think the album is terrible, but Rocky is saying nothing and he is not even saying nothing in an interesting way. People don't like the album because even though there are some cool sounds here and there, Rocky isn't flowing like he used to, and somehow his lyrics are even worse than his first mixtape after ALLA showed a lot of improvement in that area. I get why people like it, but I couldn't even make it through the third listen as the album is reallllllly boring beyond a few of the beats (which again aren't really all that experimental).

That's just your opinion. I think the songs are fairly experimental for a mainstream album and he experimented with his flows too. He also may not have a cohesive lyrical theme throughout but he gets political sometimes and brings up some issues on these songs, especially like Brotha Man.

Of course it's my opinion. You said you had no idea why people don't like the album, so I told you why I (and many others) don't like it. People are saying it's trash, because social media has created the current reactionary environment in hip hop, where everything is either an instant classic or its trash. It sucks, but that is just where online discussion of hip hop is right now. As I said before, I totally understand the appeal of this album, but I can't call the lyrics on this album anything more than trash. Not the worst lyrics I have ever heard, but possibly the least interesting I have heard in a while.
