It really doesn't help that V's launch was such a disaster. And while it eventually built itself up, things like the netcode were always a huge glaring issue. So the big question isn't 'will Ryu look good', it's 'will the game suck at launch' and 'will they finally fix the freaking netcode???' Keep in mind, V's current roster is honestly really good, so how good the game is actually going to be at launch is REALLY important to actually move people from V to VI. As-is, VI has just never stopped and it's kept improving, so actually pushing the new thing is a pretty hard sell until we see some real improvements.

But how about that Capcom Fighting Collection, though? Having all that classic Capcom goodness in one package for modern consoles is not only good for the fans, but its success could lead to some great things: new collections for more dormant & obscure franchises that haven’t appeared even in collections in over 20 years, a collection focused on Marvel games (if Marvel sees Capcom successfully curating their work, they may be more willing to sign off on the license), and of course, more entries for all these games. The cause for SF5's identity crisis is from the team initially wanting to evolve all of the designs, but it's Producer Ono fought back against this and insisted on making things more recognizable. I agree: Street Fighter 6 needs a soul first and foremost. I often hear "all I care about is hitboxes and frames", but everyone knows that isn't true because, if it was, King of Fighters XIII would have been the #1 game at EVO ten-years in a row. So while SFV may have recovered mechanically from its disastrous release and first impressions, its style remained visually and atmospherically sterile -- and I'm getting those "take us serious, we're an E-sport" vibes again from SF6's teaser, so I'm not excited. KOF15 may look graphically rough, but its character design and mechanical personality is on-point and I'm genuinely excited that so many SF players are having a blast with the game. So visually inferior to earlier ps3 fgs in the 00s (TK6, VF5) and later fgs in the 10s (MK9, KOF 13, GG Xrd, SC5). I think they’re going for more of a MMA feel while finally moving past Third Strike in the timeline (something they kinda already did with some SFV character stories, namely the ones for Rose & Oro). Basically, they’re seemingly doubling down on moving things forward while also taking a more serious tone in most respects. As for Luke, the only reason we got him at the end of SFV was because that season wasn’t supposed to happen. Season 5 was basically a stalling tactic to buy Capcom time to delay SF6. Had things going according to plan, SF6 would’ve launched early last year & Seth would’ve been SFV’s final character. Going back to SF6, even from an artistic standpoint, the game isn’t really playing it safe considering how divisive the more realistic art direction is within FGC-centric socials circles (who generally would’ve preferred a more anime-like approach similar to ASW’s recent games). This is in stark contrast to the reception SF6 got from the casual fan base, which end up being mostly praise.

Yeah, playing safe means depending too much on the SF2 veterans and their staple moves. For example compare to Terry Bogard: his staple moveset was defined by FF2 (92) but over time he gained 2 staple regular moves and also a few more regular moves that come and go; and 2 new staple supers, and 3 other new supers that come and go. Also Kyo from KoF, a more ridiculous example. He started in KoF 94 with a fireball, then in 96 he became a rekka char, gained a new kick move, a counter, and that set his staple form. Since then his rekka gains gets new variations and he gained a few regular moves that come and go; and he gained over 6 different new supers that come and go (one of them a grab super, that is notable for him). That's actually the most radical evolution of a protagonist in all fg history. Nobody would dare taking out the protagonist's fireball - SNK did and it even worked great. Now im a TK noob, so i cant comment details, i know Jin changed over times too. He isn't the same as TK3. All of that is much richer than Ryu's evolution over 30+ years of SF. Oh and all 3 protagonists above already were redesigned at least once - Kyo at the top with 3 new outfits. The last time Ryu got something new was in SF3 from around 25 years ago.

“Playing it safe”? Going in a visual direction SF has never had before in it’s 30 year history (realistic). Having the game focus on a new main character (Luke) with what seems to be presented as a “young hotshots Vs. The old guard” situation going on. Expanding on that note what happened last time Capcom tried taking that risk of focusing on new characters? We got SF3 which tanked financially and killed the franchise for 10 years. Then it came back with SF4 which is the game that played it 100% safe bringing back every classic character with their classic looks, essentially saying “look guys, we’re not doing that new SF3 stuff again, it’s the same-old nostalgic characters from before, please come back”. Then we got SF5 where they took a couple of risks with less important characters but they played it safe with the iconic characters because they didn’t want a SF3 situation again; they were testing the waters by advancing characters like Sakura and Cody to see how that would go. Now with SF6 it seems they’re finally confident enough again to try taking some actual risks; the first being the drastic change in art style, second being actually changing Ryu’s design, a classic character and the third being putting new characters in the spotlight to actually challenge the classic characters. I think “SF6 is playing it safe” is a ridiculous statement that completely misses everything we’ve seen past and present.

@@ReeceHoward06 Over the years i became more open minded about redesigns, and now i think the ideal management of modern fgs is the TK style: standard looks are redesigns, and old costumes are offered. SF5 also went that way (surprisingly for a very conservative brand) but just partially. That way the brand image is refreshed, the devs' creativity is stimulated, and in the end there's always the classic costumes for whoever want to keep them. If a new outfit turns out bad, you can be reassured that it's going to change next time, maybe for good. And every sequel makes people excited to see the new looks, which is great for publicity. Lots of positive things about it. Interestingly, outside Japan there was one game doing the right thing earlier than the jp fgs: MK. Since the classic trilogy most chars have changed consistently in every sequel, especially MK3-UMK3. And the 3d era and MK9 era did an important step of giving unique designs to ninjas, cyborgs, etc. (Meanwhile only in SF5, after 30 years of SF, Ryu and Ken are becoming less "shoto clones") That was very foward thinking for an early 90s fg considering the devs didnt have a reference from SF to do it. While I agree "safe" feels correct in this case, I feel this trailer's feel is best described with "predictable". It was hard to feel excitement when we already knew many of the things the trailer showed. We know for more than a year now that SF6 was a thing thanks to SFV's last minute season 5, Luke being there was pretty much guaranteed by the devs, Hot Ryu was a demanded by the community for years now, so it only made sense, RE Engine and realistic graphics felt like the natural next step, given Capcom's main releases in the last 6 years. This was just a checkmark signaling SF6's existence. The REAL reveal will probably be the next trailer on Summer, as gameplay will probably be shown.

You pretty much summarized how I felt about the reveal. Nothing we didn't already know about before hand. Hell even the realistic art direction would've been a safe bet considering the early builds of SFV. I hope the last few years of SFV are indicative of how SF6 will progress. More communication from the dev team and a willingness to make the characters a bit more fun and expressive. But like you had already said, they clearly are playing it safe in every way we've seen so far, so hopefully that doesn't extend to gameplay.

They didn’t change his design for SF6. This is how he’s intended to look. His design was changed for SF5, what you see here is his original design.

I can understand why you think they are playing it safe and how this does not interest you in any way. What I think is exciting is that I’m going to be seeing a new SF in the future. I don’t think they are going to make the same mistakes again but we will see. It’s cool seeing people gain interest in SF again.

SFV having an identity crisis is something I 100% agree with. It frustrates me but also something I find so fascinating about it. As for SF6, I have no idea how this will develop and turn out. Its a bit early to give a clear idea. I will say the RE engine looks nice. Hopefully the 3d models will look a lot better and be better animated than SFV.

SF5 essentially showed how the devs are still cowards about managing the roster. I mean the selective contrast between chars like Vega, Cody and Sakura, decently evolved, and then Ryu, Chun and Cammy. Like, Vega was even changed too much in moveset... While Ryu is basically the same as his SF3 form where he gained Shin Shoryuken and Denjin Hadouken.
@carlosaugusto98212 жыл бұрын
I admit i still have no idea of what i would like to see in an evolved Ryu. Like something as wild as one hand fireball, air fireball, etc... But a good starting point is changing staple animations. What excites me is seeing what happens after street fighter 3. I want to see what identity it takes because street fighter 3 was a very bold creation fully infused with 90s energy. I really can't pinpoint what influence SFV takes from, it feels quite modern for something that takes place before SF3 so there isn't much cohesion. I'm not really excited for the art style change but I kinda do wanna see what a more realisitic style would look like. I guess it's the same curiosity you have for seeing live-action adaptations. After watching their GDC, I also know that they already tried this artstyle before and it didn't work so maybe this realistic artstyle is only for this trailer. I do wish they could go the arc-system works route and push to emulate Akiman or Bengus' old style.
@carlosaugusto98212 жыл бұрын
I still believe the good amount of effort can make a nice looking SF that has stylized visuals and not going the Arcsys anime path. We dont have a strong evidence that SF definitely cant work in the current path its going, because SF devs just did lazy. For example, KoF made some cases of better looking hair than SF5, and it's a similar art style. If even SNK was able to do that - just for not wanting the banana hair - then a next gen SF could surely get a nice result if it has decent effort.
@carlosaugusto98212 жыл бұрын
Im an old SF fan and also a big fan of SF's artistic legacy like Akiman, Bengus (until MvC2), Nishimura, Edayan, etc... And also fond of the idea of emulating artists, that became easier recently. Like, even SF4 being ps3's ugliest 3d fg (graphics), it's clear that the game tried to stick to the staple SF looks defined in the mid 90s: exaggerated muscles, big focus on male shoulders, and good looking female legs, big hands, fingers and feet. In terms of anatomy, SF4 tried to get closer to early SFA art style. (And early DS and early Marvel, speaking outside SF) The looks shaped by Bengus, Ikeno and Edayan mainly. So i would like a next gen SF to stick to the staple style but just put effort on it, and trying to emulate one of those artists more directly.
@sakumaFR2 жыл бұрын
@@carlosaugusto9821 I guess the issue of SF now is that it hasn't really been able to move forward. It seems to have been riding on the fact that they died and made a comeback with SF4 so they are riding the nostalgia wave and being inspired by itself rather than taking a direction inspired by something else. When I look at SF2, Alpha and 3, they always felt inspired by something outside itself. SF4 feels inspired by SF2 and SF5 feels inspired by SF Alpha. Maybe SF6 will be inspired by SF3. In order to stick to the staple style, SF6 would need to not bring forward its old style into new technology but rather evolve it. So just like you, I am skeptical of the realistic style being an evolution.

Return to the days of individual character stories instead of a single unified campaign, hire writers to give them some ACTUAL development, smooth out gameplay mechanics and make player choice matter from the start rather than 3 expansions later, and make the roster SOLID. All world warriors in there from the beginning, PLEASE, even if some of them like Bison have to show up as noncannon zombies. "Nightmare Bison" if you will, ala Nightmare Geese.

A kinda unrelated note: I think we can assume a lot on what SF6's in-game animations will looks like by looking at Luke in SFV, his animations seem wildly different compared to the rest of the cast and I think it's because he already existed in SF6 so the dev team had an easy reference to copy and past from.

honestly I think the shift to the RE Engine and what looks to be a more realistic style is playing it safe insofar as casual audiences are suckers for graphics that look as realistic as possible. it's either that or guilty gear's/fighterz's "as close to watching an anime as possible" and as cynical as I sound I really cannot fault the public for going for either extreme. I mean, the only KOF anybody in the states talked about for the longest time is the one that went Full Anime and MAAAAAYBE mvci would have been better received by the public if it was on some RE engine shit but that would have been. a lot more money than Disney wanted to spend. anyhow mucho texto sorry

RE Engine MVC:I would probably be selling way more... but some part of me actually wish they'd have tried to make the game and it's characters look like Disney's current CGI movies. I feel this way because MVC2 tried to be the style of the 90's Marvel animated shows. They had the voice actors, the designs, everything. As such I'd have liked future MVC games carry on an "animated" style to really facilitate all that fast-paced super-action, rather than a realistic style that would have people subconsciously expect a more "realistic" pace and movement. Perhaps it shouldn't necessarily have to be "Tangled-era Disney" style, but I'm struggling to come up with another animated and lively style that both Marvel and Capcom characters can both look good in, since Marvel hasn't really had any succesful cartoons lately...

Few problems I've had with SF Series and fighting games in general - Backstory: I've been Shoryuken'ing for 25 years and this is the first time I'm worried about the Street Fighter series in a long time. - We don't need MORE accessibility/easier time for new players or ways to dumb a game down. - We need more depth, Capcom and other fighters needs to stop with the kiddy pool of skills and become an ocean already. - Priority System and Crush Counter MUST GO! Its garbage that people are fishing with Heavy Punch/Heavy Kick because it provides an extention to combos you couldn't do. - Allow combo variety please SF6, The hypest moments in FGC are combos you've never seen, or not listed. unlimited ways to potentially start combos instead of a Fixed Direction is fun, more enjoyable and creativity happens. - Capcom needs to stop gimping their players and fans. Not everyone has money, let alone tournament money and so by hiding DLC characters behind a Payed wall. The idea of hiding 16 characters behind the Base 16 characters to make extra money is garbage, Show the class your work and include EVERYONE you want without DLC. I can't learn characters unless I pay for them? I'm done feeding Capcom money ontop of extra money for characters I'll never play but need to purchase to learn how to beat them.

SF4 made it obvious early on it was trying to appeal to nostalgia by making the original roster just be the original 12 world warriors plus 4 new new challengers. SFV made it obvious early on it was appealing to the eSports crowd by not even including a single player mode and basically early access releasing for the sake of tournaments and online play. I'm not a fan of Ryu design choice. Most traditional martial artists maybe slightly muscularly wide but they are more slim and toned. I'm hyped for SF6 but I hate that Ryu looks like he does. It's great to try to differentiate him from Ken but not like that just by making him wide bodied and overly muscular unless he has judo moves and techniques added for us to understand why he's muscular like he is. They probably won't give Ryu new moves to make his visual change understandable because he's the basic character in SF an all around character not many people play as him unless they already like him or they are a pro player trying to learn his moves but then he's beginning to become more like Akira from virtual fighter.
