I received my baptism in "all things Philips" back in '76, as a high school intern, I ran a Norelco Series PC-70 color TV camera. One could feel the quality - just by touching the controls. I remember shooting a direct-to-videotape title sequence onto a Philips LDL - series VTR designed for chromium tape. Philips definitely set the standard for quality, as was evidenced even during the time of the production of this EL3586/15, which is still an absolute gem!

This baby tape recorder was built in 1964. Around 1974 a friend gave me one of these as a present, it had wow and flutter. I was 14 years and I couldn't fix it properly. At that time, Philips no longer supplied any spare parts for it. The rubber pressure roller had become hard, and the felt in front of the record/playback head was no longer okay either.

Good repair, River! I have the USA/Norelco version of this, the Continental 101. It came with a 40 minute demonstration tape. If you find a mic you can also look for an attachment, the Switchcraft RS-86 that the mic fits in that has a din plug that fits in the 5-pin power jack and has a button on it that lets you start/stop recording.

I had one of these that didn't have the tone control.it did record but the fast forward was slow and didn't make it to the end.sadly the motors automatic speed governor failed so the speed was all over the place and replaced it with a 9v cassette motor which drove that tape at about 3.5 ips.you can see it on here when it was working.one day I hope to buy one that works very well like yours.

It may be a baby tape recorder, but it has a big sound!

CassetteMaater had one of these. Don't know if it was a Philips or branded Norelco.

I have just today taken apart this type of recorder, that was my mothers. It hasn't had batteries in it, in perhaps 35 years. It is well slowed down and the drive belt for the rewind has perished and melted and isn't easy to remove. Please, could you tell me the size of the rewind drive belt, where one could find one or what one could fashion one from. The tapes that I have contain recordings of family members, long since passed away, singing at family gatherings and I am anxious to transfer them before I join them.

@ARI Red Steer I used the roll top from a disposable silicone glove and it drove the spindle. I was speaking to a local man who used to do such repairs and I'm supposed to leave it up with him, but I always forget.

Great to see this. I've got one of these which was working fine but now it only plays quietly, even at full volume. Any tips?

Very very nice recorder! I have such a small recorder with 2 speeds Grundig, a beautiful sound, but unfortunately there is a plastic belt in which something is stretched so that the recorder is not quite going well. It is a special flat and rigid belt that can not be replaced by one made of rubber. I hope to fix it again. The model is a Grundig TK6. www.radiomuseum.org/r/grundig_tk6.html?language_id=2
