when i started in construction i was 17 and i was a roofing labourer in the west coast of Scotland and we worked in the rain much heavier then that all the time we took down a Victorian sandstone chimney on top of a 3 story house in really heavy rain on old shipyard scaffold using using club hammers and bolsters and using ginny wheel and a bucket to get the stone of the scaffold and into the skip everything was heavier and harder to hold on to that day and it was so cold as well , it wasn't long after that i decided to go to college and train to be cabinetmaker/ bench joiner so i didn't need to work outside anymore .

The weight on the window is a counterbalance to offset the weight of the window regardless if you are opening it or closing it... We refer to those windows as double hung...those pockets for the counterweights are very lossy in terms of heat and air infiltration and new windows here typically replace them with spring loaded counterbalance systems to allow the weight cavity to be stuffed with insulation .that's typical for how we do that here in the northeast of the US . I enjoy your videos and it's nice to learn how others address similar projects. Thanks for sharing. .

I fitted some sash windows when I was in my second year apprenticeship. The foreman weighed the windows for weights when it had been raining for days and the windows where only in primer full of water and overly heavy. Fitted the weights couple of days later and it ran lovely. When the window dried out the bottom sash would shoot up like a rocket due to the weights being way over the top and you could hardly move the top sash.

Nice work on the window, & interesting to see “old” windows with weights. Always find it fascinating when come across those types of windows & looking at the “weights” themselves, as they can be PRETTY INTERESTING (most were made onsite & can be stamped w/ mark of person who made. Also have found names on them, seals, etc... Kinda cool looking at ”history” & a rather “simple” tool designed for moving a window up/down & the “precision” that goes along w/ them working correctly 😉 At LvL 2 at work, & LvL 3 where I live, with MANDATORY MASKS when leave Home. Just gotta say though; it’s times like this....wish owned a huge 10k+ square foot home with all the “fixings”; as don’t think would be so bad being confined to “your bubble” at home; if your home is “quite large” & the size of snooping center; or even a small town😉 L8Rs 🤙🏼

Those are some pretty epic counter-balances for those windows! I've had to repair a few as well. They should be weighted to closely match the sliding window so that it is weightless and will remain open in any position. One house I previously rented had two sets of counter balances per window, because both the top and bottom portion of the windows could open. Those were a huge challenge to repair, but really neat when they worked properly.

Ah, so little (as in no) insulation in those walls - works great to dry the walls, but is an energy hog. As Joe Lstiburek says, NZ is lucky that it started insulating much later than other countries - gets to learn from all our mistakes - need to air seal and install rain screens once you start adding insulation because the leaked energy that once could dry the walls is gone - so walls rot/mold if no additional measures taken. Fun fact, NZ average climate (rainfall/temp) is closer to Memphis Tennessee than Vancouver BC...
@CJChild4 жыл бұрын
You can't compare the climate of a whole country as long as NZ with a single city. Unless you meant to compare Auckland with Memphis?

I have never understood why anyone would install weighted windows. The problems are obvious and many. But I guess that depends on me living in a climate where double glassing and airtight frames has been a minimum for many decades. Triple glassing is becoming ever more common to be able to have large windows and still maintain the warmth during the winter.
@stevehardy35534 жыл бұрын
The only real benefit of triple glazing over double glazing is noise reduction. Try opening a massive wooden sash window and you'll soon see the benefits. Just my opinion.
@timbanwell17564 жыл бұрын
I renovated my Victorian sash windows, even reglazing partially in 4mm float glass changed the weight significantly. The Victorian glass I broke removing was wafer thin in places. Expect when double glazed the new window will need springs as there won't be room for enough weight....unless you can find lumps of lead rather than cast iron
@jn353534 жыл бұрын
@@timbanwell1756 used lead as the weights last time I did a double glazed sliding sash window here in the UK. In this case the iron type would have been to long to work effectively, lead provides that extra density!
