Adam the noise is the front pump bearing not being lubricated correctly & is causing cavitation bubbles in the trans fluid hence the noise ,having cleaned out the filter and with fresh fluid this should have a good chance of coming back, bearing in mind that the car has been laid up for some time you will find that the second oil change will help as well ,it's not possible to drain the converter on the Rover without its removal so multiple flushes is the right way to go as for the crud in the base of the pan & the filter, that is to be expected on a vehicle of that age especially one that hasn't been used for a long time, with reference to the slight harshness of the change up to second ratio it's more than likely that the valve block has got some slight corrosion from moisture in the box above the level of the fluid reacting with the air inside, whilst you working on the transmission, please check the oil cooler lines and the radiator connections as these are problematic in later life Good luck with the car it's got the makings of a good survivor.

Thank you for the tips! I. Planing 3 changes to start out with. After driving about 60 miles the changes have smoothed out a lot. It feels like it’s getting better and better with use

I don’t think that filter was passing any fluid at all… that’s what you get when old fluid is left for 16 years to settle and deteriorate in the transmission. Luckily it seems your careful and considerate resurrection will sort it out fairly easily. Is there a helpful label on the car that says what fluids it needs ?

Great job doing that trans service, have had considerable success with servicing automatic transmissions in cars and trucks and having them run & shift so much nicer. Thanks for this cool video, glad you got that car up & running properly now!

If that were my transmission making such a high pitched whining noise, I would begin by watching some of the KZbin videos of the "Gary Ferraro" channel on how to rebuild those older Borg Warner automatic transmissions. He is a real guru of transmissions.

I have rebuilt a few of them. They’re pretty straight forward. Just don’t feel like doing it right at the beginning of summer. Driven the car about 60 miles and it has been great so far

Excellent job Adam. A good road trip will sort things out! Soon it will be the XJ-S Cabriolet weather, cannot wait for you to drive this with the top down!

Adam the gearbox whisperer 👍. Every video is another step in the right direction. I kinda wish you were in the UK though as I have a poorly XJ6 series 1 ☹️

It seems you may have averted a rebuild Adam. Nice.

Looks like a good improvement! But put in a new filter. At a microscopic level, you'd see that it is still partially clogged.

Some of the BW 35s have a drain plug on the torque convertor.

Looks as though Mr. Coggins Garage have some knowledge about these gearbox's ....cross fingers Adam ! As you say you really don't want to be rebuiling the gearbox at the moment .

That transmission fluid looks brown; how did it smell? It did not look good when it first came out of the drain plug hole. A good source of parts is Erickson Transmissions in the USA.

It didn’t smell bad or burnt. So far I’ve put 60 miles on the car and the transmission has been great.

Curious, do they have a kick-down cable that can be adjusted for when or how hard it shifts?

sorry pump spins in park on a borg warner no idea where you heard it from converter spins the pump there is no disconnection there with whats in the pan that box is toast , that junk is bushings and clutch plates

I read that it doesn’t do it on the BW35 just as it does not on the BW12. BW65 and 66 spin them in park

Wow, that was a horrible noise, never heard that before. And I've owned some fairly neglected P6 auto's in the past. Glad it seems like you've fixed it.
