My favorite part about this is how little Grog talks while the party yells and screams at Scanlan. The first thing he asks is about his mother and then apologizes. Really shows just how close those two where.

They all saw Scanlan wasn't doing ok and everyone was just shitting on him (although he he was being a little shit) and Vax even ragdolled him around and hsat all over his feelings when Scanlan was trying to express his feelings after he died the first time upon Keyleth's massive fuckup. Vax then walked straight to Keyleth who was feeling a bit bad for fucking up so much and he told her how amazing she is and consoled her. Massively opposite treatments and Sam, not Scanlan, did make a point of that which is probably the reason why he decided Scanlan was going to lash out.

This was a heavy one. It's just the utter feeling of realisation and betrayal on the other's faces. Laura's 'My take away from Scanlan is that we all talk too much.' and her 'Fuck him for not saying anything sooner. And fuck us for not asking.' is so important, because they realized right then and there what they had done, even if they never meant for it to be this way. But there's also that sense of betrayal because Scanlan never said anything sooner, even when they asked. Those feeling were so real. It's why Sam breaking the tension with a joke is needed. It's making sure everyone is alright after it.

i feel like that's one part people overlook alot, they did ask him how he was doing, if not regularly, then a few times in the prior episodes at least, and he always lied. Then he comes out with all this anger that they dont know the things he refused to tell them. Not that he's completely unjustified, but it was a dysfunctional dynamic that he kinda fostered.

Me too, I can only imagine how it would have gone with Pike in the mix when Scanlan snaps at the rest of Vox Machina, especially considering how he was shaken because of his death and resurrection, and how this was building up for him for a while now... as well as how he felt like he _FAILED_ Kaylie by getting killed by Raishan.

Just getting back into D and D and tabletop gaming after a twenty-year hiatus and started seeing mentions of the bard's lament and had to look it up. Gotta say, even without any context of any of the characters this was deep. Hats off to Sam for bringing something so raw to his roleplaying and forcing the rest to react in a similar fashion. And the guy who plays grog asking his mothers name after like twenty minutes of pure dysfunction damn near made me cry. Gonna have to watch all their sessions now.

There's a moment, I can't remember the exact episode, but it's maybe 4 or 5 before this one, where they are making fun of Scanlan for being weak and not strong like them and I swear you can see a look cross Sam's face. I believe to this day that that's when the plan was put in motion and it was only a matter of time before he found the right moment.

They said Pike being there would've changed Bard's Lament, it just ended up being that taken to the extreme: Pike being there the whole time meant Scanlan never went down the dark spiral and as a result never even got to the Bard's Lament because he had someone the whole time openly caring about him and letting him be open to her about all his fears instead of bottling it up

I was pretty disappointed about it too, but I completely understand Sam Riegal's explanation as to why it wasn't adapted. When the group was writing for Season 3, there was no real guarantee that Vox Machina would've gotten renewed for a 4th season, and they didn't want to end the season on such a sour note with Scanlan lashing out at the group and leaving them. It wouldn't have been such a pleasant feeling for the season to end so bitterly and for the show to not get renewed for season 4 (essentially ending the whole show so bitterly).

I know that this video primarily focuses on Scanlan, but re-watching Tary's introduction, I realized something. The title of his book which we see in C2 is The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Sir Taryon Darrington. What, in this scene, does Percy suggest as a title? The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Taryon Darrington. Like, I'm sorry, but considering what happens later in this arc, this just sends me into a inhuman state of joy. Because they treated his life as a joke, because he is a joke, he is the comedic relief. That's his role, the role he chose and upheld...until, slowly but surely and then all at once: Scanlan realized he could no longer live like that. By then however, it was far too late for anyone to do anything healthy about it. He needed to leave, to reset. And also to be in the right place at the right time to warn the others about Vecna's impending return, or else Vox Machina may have only learned of this when Thar Amphala arrived in Illsyra.

@JDOTczar Tbh I'm still working though the vox machina campaign and am currently at episode 104. I usually liked percys character and talesians roleplay but after this episode to where I'm at, I like it less and less, not just with Scanalan but with anyone. Scrying on Scanlan against his wishes and only to get his belongings, acting so angry and not once apologising to him once he returned and infact having Scanlan apologise to him rubbed me up the wrong way. Also loved how when he left he went to hug Kaylie and she pushed him away😂 he wanted to act like he had her best interests at heart but Kaylie knew he didn't care, he was purely looking for a mic drop moment throughout

He's literally telling Scanlan to get to know his daughter instead of treating her like a sacred object and he is one hundred percent right about both Scanlan and Kaylee being absolutely flawed gnomes who act like the world is against them and react accordingly by being obnoxious, as funny and enjoyable as Scanlan is. They barley known each other yet act as if they're relationship can't be worked on through any other means. Edit: The only reason why he scryed on Scanlan was to check up on him because he actually does care about him and he has no reason to aplogize to Scanlan after the crap he pulled in Bard's Lament. Percy also angry that Scanlan has the nerve to call out people when he was never forthcoming with his emotions and bottled things up and took it out on Vox Machina. He even asked Scanlan if he knew Kaylee's mother's name after he returend and he still didn't know, it proved Percy's entire point that Scanlan doesn't know Kaylee and he acts all upset and frustrated when he looks like a tool. Its obvious Percy cared way more about Kaylee especially when he went to hug her, that was just Matt Mercer showing how difficult she can be as a person. Its also proving that he knows her mother's name and Scanlan can't even be bothered to remember it after a year of getting to know her.

It is brutal honesty about how flawed Scanlan and Kaylee are, especially since Scanlan has no moral highground here when he literally insults Percy in his speech about saying they only got vengeance so he could feel good about his name nevermind the fact the Briarwoods are tormenting innocent people and using Percy's home as a place of despair and have his sister as a captive. Percy was telling Scanlan to stop acting like Kaylee is a precious object and to actually get to know her rather than maki g promises he can't keep. I’m not sure if it’s because I got lucky with my friends but whenever I say “what are you guys doing?” They start yammering about whatever like they were waiting for me to shut up. I don’t mind of course I love it makes me feel they really feel like they are in my world. Hope you found a better game with a even better dm

It leaves them little true room to stand on regarding what Scanlan wants to hear for proof of them “caring”

@@arkham7033 They were trying to extract info from the NPCs. Vs Scanlan having a traumatic event in his past that he CLEARLY made obvious he had no interest in discussing. On a meta level, this translates to Sam being genuinely uninterested in the somewhat melodramatic roleplay the cast (sans Travis and Ashley) had been engaging in and them respecting his space in kind. Notice how no one intervenes during the Spice addiction. It's not because they don't care about Scanlan, it's because they figure Sam is pursuing a comedy angle and don't want to step on it. Also, reminder that Vex and Vax were also extremely secretive about their mother's name and never openly discussed it in front of the party. Scanlan only "knows" it because Sam printed out a page from the CR Wiki and genuinely forgot they hadn't volunteered the info to his character.

@@vishaansingh1019 I can see where you’re coming from and that’s one take. But clearly, as Scanlan said, he’s a good liar and has deeper meanings to his comedy angles. Heck, he hides a lot of things behind his joking characters. Look at Nott and FCG. Both comical in their own right with deeper intentions. I’m not saying anything about Vex and Vax’s mom, but he did remember Percy’s parents. All the characters had emotional backstories and Sam’s was never fought for to be investigated. Furthermore, this party has used magic on each other in the past for combat too. The staple for that in my mind is when Keyleth used hold person on Percy and they stole Percy’s gun on a guess. I’m saying they could have done more to meet Scanlan’s standards. Hence why I said “little they care to an extent”. Also, if it was “clear” Sam had not wanted to discuss such an important thing, it makes little sense for him to bring it up now as a point of contention. On top of it all, the slowest of them all, Grog, was the only one not yelling at Scanlan and apologizing as opposed to trying to convince him what great friends they are. We have different views and that’s that.

@@arkham7033 Sam completely changed his roleplay style after A Bard's Lament and FCG and Nott represent that. Scanlan was a comedy first character who happened to have some stellar serious moments, but Matt had to basically force him into that serious stuff (i.e. Kaylie). He kept trying to revamp Scanlan to have some sort of reason to stick around (i.e. the drug addiction) but quickly realized that he was starting to stick out and decided to throw a curveball at the group with this brilliant scene. Taryon then came pre-loaded with a sad backstory that VM could resolve. When Scanlan returned, he was a much more reserved and serious person who represented Sam's commitment to opening up to serious roleplay. Regardless, the idea of VM using magic to force Scanlan to trauma dump against his will is insane and morally repugnant. If they had done that, I would have stopped watching.

I've always been impressed by Sam, and his ability to create a character who is, honestly, both equal parts scumbag who needs his ass kicked, and the MVP. Like this whole rant is so good, because it really shows what a piece of shit Scanlan can be, while also (almost) making sense. Like, he's completely full of shit, but he's got juuuuust enough legit ammo that you can see how he's rationalizing it. Like, you want nothing more than for Grog to lop his stupid head off.....and then he's later the, as I said, MVP. Hats off to Sam.

THANK YOU! Finally someone with some logic. Its obvious Scanlan is hurting something awful and is lashing out towards his friends because of his own inadequacies, and making a few legitimate ammo points, but you know he's also wrong about a variety of things especially in this episode. Which is why it was good for him to take a break and redeem himself in the long run.
