Program Note:
The title and concept for this piece comes from a quote by American dancer Martha Graham, the choreographer of Aaron Copland’s seminal ballet, ‘Appalachian Spring’. She had used this phrase, “a barely suppressed hysteria”, to describe the movement of the dancers in the seventh scene of the original ballet. This scene, titled by Copland “Moment of Crisis”, and following a scene of the American Civil War, was removed from the final version of the famous suite.
When considering Copland’s ballet, as well as the surreal theatrical set designed by Isamu Noguchi and inspired by Alberto Giacometti, and the context in which Copland had written and unwritten the work as a Jewish man writing in 1943, I found Graham’s quote to be ironically precise. In my music, I chose to illuminate what Graham saw and what Copland had concealed in Appalachian Spring.

@@BetonBrutContemporary yes!! I wanted it to be like “wait a minute, I know that…”. Also a lot of random harmonic and rhythmic references to Copland scattered, but those are a little more hidden ;)
