Net /Gross Ratio is a major factor in the Volumetric equation for estimating the volumes contained in oil and gas fields
This is the portion of the rock volume that contains porous rock capable of containing and producing hydrocarbons
N/G is defined using sedimentological and petrophysical cut-offs
N/G will exclude non - reservoir rock or rock of very poor reservoir quality (porosity and permeability) which is unlikely to flow fluids
N/G ratio can be a controversial subject among some geologists
But we need to eliminate non-reservoir rock from the volumetric estimate
Tanks (large thicker units) vs Pancakes (discrete thinner units)
N?G is Dependent on cut offs - will marginal rock contribute
Cut offs (V Shale & Porosity ) can be subjective
