"This is rumor control, here are the facts." Absolutely love that line. 33:45. I'm glad i'm not the only one who doesn't like how the music in this scene was edited for the Assembly cut. As for the fox fade out at the start of the film, it also shows up in AVP classic 2000.

They say the Fincher cut is like Marlon Brando's cut of One Eyed Jacks-in essence well over the 4 & 1/2 hour mark which isn't pretty:),but it's pretty awesome:)

A great discussion! It is great to see how people get to know the movie and how they perceived it at the time. I came late to the game and Alien 3 was the first movie I watched back in the day and--although I can now see the predecessor movies are way better--at the time, I watched it on a TV run (so years after it is release) and I was so impressed that it made me backtrack and watch the earlier movies and from there I dove into the Alien universe.

There was absolutely a pitch for an Alien 3 set on Earth. That's where the infamous "if Aliens invade death valley you nuke death valley" line came from. Either Walter or David Giler said that. It was one of the first people to pitch for the third film, and then... I think it was the guy who directed Die Hard 2, he then suggested going to the Alien planet. That's where Alien 3 started. There may not have been a script, but the idea of bringing the aliens to Earth was certainly tossed around.

2:28:43 No, AJ is right, there was talk about the aliens being in cornfields on Earth. Yes, the fields appear in Ward's version, but what he's describing is from the pitch by Renny Harlin.

There's something about the Alien 3 we got that i liked, perhaps David Finchers style, the music score is very good too - Agree with Aaron i like 3 as the first two, its weird i feel the same for the Terminator franchise, 1, 2 and 3

Alien 3 is a great movie it doesn’t deserve the hate it gets yes it kills Newt and Hicks but it shows this is not a universe with a happy ending and it returns the franchise to a horror franchise because while Aliens is a good movie it’s a action movie not a horror movie and it has a great cast
@Xenomorphine2 жыл бұрын
‘Aliens’ is both. It’s a fusion of action and horror genres. Cameron’s ‘The Terminator’ was probably the first modern film to successfully blend them and this furthered that. Sadly, it was the last time Cameron properly touched the horror genre. Fincher was the one to observe that one of the biggest flaws of ‘Alien 3’ was that it never offers any genuine scares and aimed, instead, to be what he called “queasy”, which he fully recognised was a major mistake for a series which had been defined by horror themes, up until that time.

Speaking of the trailer " On earth... ", I believe that goes back to a time when Harlin was involved with the pre production as a director, there was a mention that one of the ideas they played with was a " Blade runneresque " city where Hicks and Ripley supposed to fight against the company and an army of Aliens but Harlin didn't want to make basically a copy of Aliens so he backed out from the project, I assume this particular trailer has got something to do with it.

I understand that people are allowed their own thoughts and feelings when it comes to art - it's subjective. But Eric saying Alien and Aliens has the same consistent feel and more like one familiar, is completely wrong. Additionally, I think Alien 3 gets a lot of undeserved hate because it's the "cool" thing to do with Alien fans. The movie is about hopelessness and that no matter what happens, this species has no happy ending, there's no escaping it. The movie paints a picture of emotion that perfectly matches the alien species. It has flaws, but I think it gets a lot of undeserved hate, and it's my favourite Alien movie behind Aliens.
@mcflonway Жыл бұрын
For Eric’s question where the prisoner says “Ba” before the igniter sets off the explosion. It’s a bit cheesy but it’s supposed to be “Ba” and then the next shot is the explosion so… “Ba…Boom!” in a sense!

Alien 3 is gorgeous, it has its flaws, but this heavy nihilistic atmosphere and religious references make it much, much better than Aliens, which for me with its ideas destroyed this mysterious, miraculous figure of the Alien.
@PawPads2 Жыл бұрын
I always found the environments in the Alien franchise just as important as the Aliens themselves. The environments really scared me too, and alot of people never seem to discuss that part. I've always thought the prison planet environment was the most interesting in Alien 3, it really worked, they nailed it. Hicks and newt been killed off was perfect, its that world, its unforgiving, it doesn't let up, and ended the story of Ripley perfectly.

The theatrical ending is way better. The Assembly verison looks like a damn animatic. Having Ripley hold the queen close as one act of defiance before going into the fire is brilliant. Her look of stoicism... She's faced her ultimate nightmare, and she can die in peace knowing she saved ANYONE from having to suffer this nightmare again. I am a firm believer that the perfect version of the film... or at least a better version, is somewhere between the two. I don't think its good to have the alien get captured. I think you can kill Golic in the infirmary with a couple changes to the editing and a well palced scream as Ripley runs away.
@OpenMawProductions2 жыл бұрын
Also, aso to saving Hicks and Newt. Not anyway to do that with any kind of a fan edit, but I would say you could insert some of the dialogue between Newt and Ripley from the infirmary. "Cross my heart" "And hope to die." and right before she hits "Can I dream?" "Yes honey, I think we both can." WOOOMPH....
@OpenMawProductions2 жыл бұрын
I don't know why Aaron or Ridgeteop think Ripley was surviving. She says "I just felt it move." And there is no way the company would keep her alive. They would take what they want and then let her go to the big sleep. There was no survival for her. Showing Ripley hold that queen as she falls into the fire is one last act of PROACTIVE defiance on her part. It is so important to her character. That's the last concious act she takes before she dies.
