It's basically just 100% closure for Mikasa and Eren's tragic romance. They didn't have to go this direction with the last ending(I was expecting something bout the perpetual cycle of violence)but I'm very pleased that they did.

To be fair I think both Isayama and mappa knew they put us through enough emotional trauma and wanted to give us a little bit of closure. It felt so right to end it this way but I'm still here feeling empty :(

@@bigsokward I read the manga 2 years ago and had that same feeling of emptiness. Even now I think what always left me feeling all weird is just how harsh the story is to Mikasa and Eren compared to the others. Doesnt help that all we get of Mikasa is her around the grave mourning for years up til death and Eren had to risk Mikasa completely breaking their bond by telling her to forget him. Like I'm sure her life was ok but it's super emphasized how much she misses Eren over everything else so I don't exactly feel happy seeing her old still with the scarf. So I think it's a bit therapeutic to see that at least Mikasa and Eren get to be at peace together at the very end of it all after so much suffering

@@MrWanton16 fr both of them deserve due to the fact eren and mikasa always spent their days with eachother and that mikasa was probably in depression after his death

Naysayers can say "it's not canon" all they want because they're wrong, Isayma said that the anime is the "definitive version" of AoT because he works very closely with it and he always added changes and tweaks to it he'd like to have made with the manga. Every ending and opening song always had a meaning behind it. So this being the ending animation means it got a thumbs up from him, meaning it's canon. I'm pretty sure the ending is showing us Mikasa passing on to the afterlife right after she died from the old age. In the beginning we saw her jump into the water and then floating in it surrounded by white cherry blossoms which are often used in funerals in Japan and represent the transience of life, rebirth and a new beginning. We see her floating in the water surrounded by them in the exact same position she was buried in, which signals her passing away and her journey into the afterlife. We then see Mikasa experience a dream state where she sees birds on a fence and right under it we are shown 4 red roses which symbolize "Nothing Will Come Between Us", one of the birds is holding 1 red rose signifying "you're the one and only love". Then we see her and Eren running around being happy and at peace together, leaning into each other and being there for each other. She then holds 2 yellow chrysanthemums shining bright which symbolizes the long life she lived with both sorrow and neglected love in her heart and her closing her hands putting out its light showing that its the moment of her death. The final lyric of the song is "I know I'll see you again, lets say goodnight" as Mikasa opens her eyes in the exact same position as she was buried. Her eyes full of tears thinking its just another dream again but no, she has a surprised expression because she sees Eren is right there with her, holding her hand with a yellow butterfly on his hand which represents rebirth, they're finally reunited in the afterlife free from war and cruelty of this world, together for eternity 😭

@@bigsokward I had to man, we all need closure after such an unfair and heartbreaking ending for Mikasa and Eren, so thank god they made this ED because it finally put my soul at ease lol

This is %100 canon man. Like that creepy Aot ending which is about big titan war. And a person who have big part on this video especially suggest to check it out along main story. If it’s one of those unga bunga not story related ending why would he/She suggest that right? So thank you to all people who give this addition to main story. Really good move.

I'll add that, I never really thought about what Mikasa's "Itterasshai" actually meant when I read the manga, but many things in the anime were subtly altered, and details made more explicit to better comprehend the story, and to avoid people reacting as negatively as they did, things such as... Armin angered by Eren's actions, and that they'll meet again in hell. Eren calling himself an idiot, and that, for him, this was his only choice, and Mikasa's words to Ymir, that her love was just one long nightmare. Looking at Armin's words, that they'll meet again in hell, I think the original line was changed for two reasons. Many didn't vibe with the original line from the manga ("Thank you for committing mass genocide for us") so it was changed for that reason, but I think it was also done to help reinforce Mikasa's own "Itterasshai", that both Armin and Mikasa will see Eren again later, in the afterlife. At first I thought the final ED took place entirely in paths, but if you go back to The Rumbling OP, the butterfly at the end that's killed is the same butterfly at the end of the final ED. Mikasa is also lying in the same position as when she passed in the real world, and she opens here eyes to the butterfly, and to Eren. What we are seeing is the outcome of her "Itterasshai", her, I'll "see you later"...the afterlife. Something many anime OP and EDs do, is show a side to the story not at all present within the story, and exists only within the OP/ED, BUT, it's meant to be taken as canon and it's done to elevate the story. As others have pointed out, Shingeki no Kyojin had already done this, with it's ED3. Showing us things like, the war between Eldia and Marley in Ymir's time, and the Eldian's relocating to create Paradis and build the walls. These are details within the story we never actually see, we're only told about them, but ED3 was used to show this side of the story, that isn't explicitly shown in the story proper, and it's the same for the final ED. The manga doesn't show the result of Mikasa's "Itterasshai", but they thought it clever to use the final ED, to show that side of the story, that isn't explicitly shown in the story proper, to elevate the story.
