"Marcie can't be real; she never gets old" always gets me. There's something inspiring about being so determined to figure out the truth that you crack the flaws in your own basic perceptions of reality.

I know people who have had hallucinations of this strength, and I have found it to be the height of human will and determination to have those kinds of breakthroughs. I think it is just as powerful when he finally says goodbye to them. Apparently, towards his later years, John's hallucinations finally went away. I can only imagine that sort of relief and peace he was able to have after fighting so hard.

Crowe, Bettany, and Harris. Talk about talent! Fun fact, in case you don't know, Paul Bettany is married to Jennifer Connolly irl. I believe they hooked up while making this movie. You should see her alongside Di Caprio and Djimon Honsou, in "Blood Diamond". Another 5☆ movie that's also a true story. Badass fr.

Ron Howard masterpiece. The score was great! I was completely blown away when the truth came out. I was like "what???" I was so confused. I even thought the doctor (Chrisopher Plummer from sound of music who was perfect for this role) wasnt legit. It took me longer than most to "get it".

Winner of 4 Oscars including Best Picture. This is a very important film about mental health, like Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder. It's also a very sad story of one genius trying to figure out what's real and what's not.

A bit late here, but a friendly reminder that Nash has said the movie has no root in reality. He never had any visual hallucinations. He never took any medications. They gave him insulin induced seizures, which in fact CAUSED many of his issues. He was only let out because he acted compliant. Good movie. Complete butchering of his life.

This movie hits home for me. I'm from WV, born and raised and my brother was a math genius that got schizophrenia as well. Unfortunately he lost his battle to suicide when he was 21 and I was 19. He had to go through electro-shock therapy as well for years. He was accepted to Princeton at 16, but ended up going to Williams in Massachusetts. The saddest about Dr. Nash and his wife died in a car accident in 2015.

YES! Such an underrated movie with interesting themes. Also makes it feel real with hints of WTF moments. I did not see the twist coming when I first watched this. Was caught off guard and I felt even more sorry for Nash. This is one of the few movies in the world that gets me emotional. The score is also sublime. What a movie.

This film is a reminder that the human mind is beautiful but oh so dangerous and how it can turn on you at any moment and you not even realize it. I first saw this movie in my senior year during film class and I loved it and I have watched it dozens and dozens of times since and now in my early 30s when I watch it it does freak me out a bit when I start thinking about damn what if that happened to me?, your mind just like a flip of a switch making all this craziness possible.. The score in this movie is just beautiful and the acting top notch..great reaction prime🍻

As someone who spent my childhood and college years alone, the moment Nash realizes his best friend never existed...it just broke me. And then the pen scene broke me again. And then his final speech just crushed me. When John says that he believes in assigning value to things, he's telling her that he values what she gave him. He values it because she gave it to him.

The true story was even more tragic for Nash. His wife did divorce him... and honestly who can blame her? That's a lot. They did get back together later in life once he improved though.

1st to comment. I saw this one and jumped. GREAT CHOICE! Never saw anyone react to this before. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Winner Best Picture. Winner of Best Actress (Jennifer Connelly- the girlfriend from Top Gun- Maverick). She was incredible in this. And it should've been Russell Crowe's 2nd straight Oscar for Best Actor after winning for "Gladiator" the year before (which also won Best Picture). True story too. Tragic how the Nashes died just a few years ago in 2015. They both arrived back in NJ after he won the King of Norway's Abel Prize and were supposed to have a limo service, but they arrived 5 hrs.' early, took a taxi, instead, and the idiot driver crashed and killed them both. Lookin' forward to your reaction. Will update from here...

Great reaction. Enjoyed watching you experience this. So few movies can have this quality; boggle you; make you incredibly sad; lift you up AND be hugely inspirational. I mean, what he did all those years had to be beyond difficult. That's a level of self-control and discipline that I can't imagine. SO admirable. And her unfailing love and support. 😌

What I think is confounding is this movie has a stellar cast, a true story, and an amazing one at that, and it's gone way under the radar for many people, including reactors. I was mesmerized in the movie theater. I only went because my friends daughter plays Marcee, but I left astonished at what I saw, and the performance of Russell Crowe. He more than deserved the Oscar he didn't win that year, as the movie won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, but the main reason for its success was Crowe's all-time top performance, and making it feel so real.

@@Atlas_Redux I've read that he did take medications (per Nash himself), and he indeed stopped taking them, was hospitalized 8 times for schizophrenia, and his audible hallucinations wouldn't have played as well on screen. It is indeed a true story, with many facts left out or changed under the dubious 'directors discretion' philosophy of making a movie based on a true story. He did marry his student Alicia, they did have a kid (2), he did have schizophrenia, and he did win the Nobel Prize. Embellished, but true.

This stuff is so complex. Dreams and nightmares directly impact people’s lives, even physically. It’s just like taking square roots of negative numbers - they’re literally charted on imaginary planes and used in actual mathematics, despite not being real by definition. Makes me think “real” is just an insufficient measurement. I hope in the future, imaginary experiences are destigmatized so people can more quickly seek to understand instead of focusing all energy into dismissal. You just don’t learn from things if you pretend they didn’t happen.

Except it has absolutely zero base in reality. They divorced early on. He never had any visual hallucinations. He never got any ECT treated. He never took any medications. He was forced into seizures by insulin shock, which CAUSED most of his problems. He himself got out of it by acting compliant.

For another awesome Ron Howard, Russell Crowe biopic take a look at CINDERELLA MAN. It is a true story from the time of the Great Depression that is right up there with A BEAUTIFUL MIND on my favorites list. And the wonderful Thomas Newman score is almost as beautiful as James Horner's score in this one.

i LOVED the beginning and the ending. The middle got a little wonky for me. Being a genius is extremely difficult. Everyone thinks we are crazy, but when proven correct in high percentages, it then causes people to be fearful. "Governing dynamics..." LOVE IT!

Fantastic movie but nowhere near accurate unfortunately. In fact, Alicia and John had been divorced for several decades, and still were when he received the nobel. They remarried about the time the movie was made, but sadly died in a car crash in 2015.

It is NOT very accurate. I'd say about 25% true to life. Nobel prize was not awarded to Nash alone and there was no speech. Nash didn't have clear visual hallucinations with their names like in the movie. No hallucination of code breaking, implants, etc. Nash later claimed he wasn't "that" crazy but people around him made him out to be. His game theory was not invented in the bar and the movie's explanation of it is incorrect.
