Te Rātā Bay is a hidden gem tucked away on the southern shore of Lake Tarawera in Rotorua, New Zealand. It’s known for its unique hot water beach, where a hot spring trickles down a small stream and into the lake, creating a natural geothermal wonder. Here’s what you need to know:
• Access: Te Rātā Bay and Hot Water Beach were once only accessible by boat. However, now experienced trampers can reach the bay and beach via the 15km Tarawera Trail. Be cautious when dipping your toes into the water on the lake’s edge, as there can be hot spots.
• Experience: Dig into the silky sand to feel the geothermal magic at work. Create a sandy hole to soak in or build a rock pool to keep the hot water from escaping.
• Camping: The Hot Water Beach Campsite, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC), is located here. It’s a great spot for campers to enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water activities12.
