Beavers are amazing animals and I've encountered a lot of dams and ponds canoeing in the north woods where their engineering prowess is just part of nature. They're also tenacious creatures. They'll see all of the excavated material on the banks and think...oooh...building material.

I'm always impressed by how well you both work together. I can see how much mutual respect and awareness you both have for each other. You know when to get out of the way when the excavator is working and the operator knows when he has the safe opening to do his part. Great teamwork, be safe and Happy Holidays.

@@msTECH86 I did notice though that when the operator started dumping the buckets towards the guy watching he had to move back a bit, and then sure enough he would move in again as soon as the operator swung back. If I was running the excavator, I would have extended the boom out all the way and swung it slowly towards him and tell him, stay outside of that swing. He could have very easily moved 5 to 10 feet or so downstream and been out of the swing and seen just as well. I worked my whole life in commercial construction and safety became more of a concern as time went on. Funny how easy that is to see watching the video verses being in the middle of it when it's happening. Sorry if I'm being critical, but I was the guy who had to deal with OSHA whenever they came calling.

@@msTECH86 exactly! We have a property that has a low water crossing on the creek that runs through it. Tomorrow I'll rent an excavator for the 5th time to open the culvert and remove the 6 feet of sediment that has collected at the crossing due to the beavers plugging the culvert. The destruction beavers have caused on that creek is unbelievable. In fact, once I get the culvert open and the water level drops we will begin the task of removing 2 huge oak trees that the little bastards dug dens under which caused them to fall and take down a big bitter pecan also. 1 oak fell and landed in the middle of the channel. It knocked the 2nd oak across the channel at its stump and it's top took the bitter pecan down and across the creek in a bend. The trunks and limbs caught all manner of timber debris from upstream which caused tremendous turbulence causing a 40 foot section of bank to be undercut and slough off into the creek due to beaver dens and that turbulence. This creek has high, nearly vertical banks and it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 to 15 feet from the top of the banks to the water now. Removing the trees and clearing the channel is going to be a huge job and very dangerous. I HATE beavers. We have dealt with the problems they cause since the late 80s, I have trapped them in the past to thin their numbers. But once the culvert is open this time, NOTHING short of their TOTAL eradication will be satisfactory to me! NOTHING! I will trap and or shoot them into extinction on my property! And my neighbors along the creek are in complete agreement with me on that.

Was up in Ontario Canada a few years back walleye fishing, off the main lake there was a narrow channel through some rock walls, once we entered the lake, we could see something off in the distance, as we got closer we realized it was a huge beaver dam, we got out of the boat and walked up to the top of it and saw that behind the dam was roughly 250-300 acre lake behind it, with a massive beaver hut in the middle. that dam we estimated was 8-8.5 feet tall, the dam had been built between 2 hills, as we were fishing we could see numerous spots where water was seeping through the hills,

That stream could use some loose rock check dams -- it's seriously eroded! I've never seen a beaver dam with that big a height above the stream bed -- I've always seen beavers make a series of dams where the water level in each one is at the bottom of the next one upstream. Watching this I found myself wondering if there's a way to encourage them to build lower down. I also found myself wondering what would happen if a 16" culvert pipe were put into the dam to keep the water level lower -- would the beavers just plug it?
@Ntwadumela110 ай бұрын
Either the beavers will plug it, or it will get clogged naturally, or someone will steal it, or the beavers will build a second dam. These so called beaver deceivers are only good in theory.
