I don't like his Hollywood films. Two literal and commercial for me. Not much nuance. Not his choice certainly. We know Weinstein was breathing down his shoulder on Snowpiercer, having hm edit his work. His Korean movies are the best. Hope he keeps making only Korean movies, because then he will have absolute control of his material. We also know what happened to Park Chan Wook's Stoker. Just awful. Let them do it their way.

His movies have the “gotcha” intelligence of watching a really good anime only in real life. And as for his directing style? It’s just so good, and I’ve never seen anything like it. Wish I could pick apart all of the qualities that make his style. Camera angle and creative lighting are definitely some of the features. If I could pick my favorite directors of this era, I’d say Bong Joon-ho, Sadfie Brothers, Quinten Tarantino and Wes Anderson. Any other suggestions?

SK did have a military dictatorship. It's explained in movies such as "1987" and "A Taxi Driver" (the latter is with the same protagonist as "Parasite"). Both films are Korean and I super recommend them, especially the latter.
