A beginners colour pencil project 3. Red rose

In my first 2 beginners tutorials, I covered how to apply the pencils to the paper and how to smoothly blend your colours. In todays project I will be showing you how to layer to a nice full coverage and getting some really dark shadows in your work. I hope you have a go!
I used polychromos colours:
deep scarlett
dark red
Walnut brown
black
chrome oxide green
earth green yellowish
fuchsia (optional)
For prismacolor I used:
permanent red
crimson red
Tuscan red (dark and warm it makes a decent substitute for walnut brown in this piece)
Black
Olive green
lime peel
process red (optional)
I have used odorless mineral spirits (OMS) to blend my colour pencils in this tutorial, and used a 3/10 oval, and a 1/8 oval taklon brushes to blend
I used an A5 piece of Arches Hot press in my video demo, and fabriano accademia for my practice runs, which are extremes of an expensive and a budget paper! When choosing your paper, look for a nice sturdy paper with a slight tooth to the surface.

Was following along pretty well until it got to the leaves. Voice over said to use Tuscan Red for the shadows and artist switched from tuscan red back to olive green (?) and did not say to switch to green. But, had I paid closer attention I would have seen the actual pencil color changed. Long story short, the petals look good. The leaves, not so much, lol. Thanks for the tutorial, I did learn some things and found it very helpful :)

there are many walnut brown substitute like choclate,sepia,dark brown etc in prismacolor,in fact the original tuscan red substitute in polychromos is caput mortum violet because it has a red undertone in it.

You make an excellent point. While I didn't feel like the prismacolor browns were warm enough of me to use in in this piece, you would still get a good result if you used them. Also, Carput mortuum could easily be used as the darker colour in the polychomos version. When I make these tutorials I try to pinpoint some colours to start with so a beginner can just pick them up and start playing, but there is no reason you need to use these exact colours or even these brands of pencils. Feel free to use any colours that you like!! it really is the value (how light or dark)and the temperature (warm or cool) of the colour that matters most.

I was excited to try this. Until she pulled out the thinner. Lol I don't have that! I'm about to color two roses in my coloring book and wanted to do a good job so I thought to look up a video. But I couldn't find a good video for myself :( Maybe make videos for true beginnings who uses coloring books and with only color pencils? Lol I'd be ALL over those videos. I still very much enjoyed this video and watched the whole thing! I just couldn't take much from it for myself this time 😞

If you only want to use pencils that’s fine.. it just takes even more time and patience. (More than I have!! Lol) Keep your pencils sharp, and create tiny circles with a very light touch. Just keep building up colour, layer upon layer. It will build to a point that the pencils suddenly starts to blend together as you work, this is the time you can start to press a little harder and “burnish” all the layers together and you should end up with a nice even feel coverage . Using a nice waxy pencil like the prismacolours will build up faster Hope that helps

Thank you for the awesome tutorial! I always wonder how you pick the exact colors when drawing? I feel like I'm very bad at picking colors and I always end up creating an obvious border between darker area and lighter area when I'm trying to do gradation... :(

onnt758 I’m in the same boat with colors. So many and soooo many different brands. I always get stuck on colors that would blend so well together. I’m finding this very helpful and I hope it helps you. I keep a note book with notes when I do a follow along and make notes on colors used as well as drawing diagrams. Although it does require time it’s so well worth it. I just stumbled onto Cassandra.... thank goodness.....😊 as I run into walls with the colors. This video is so helpful. Chris Cheng and Henny DeSnoo are as well very brilliant artists. They as well do videos. Cassandra is being very Tthorough and is explaining everything. I keep the names and pics I use to reference to later on as well as pencil name brands, colors and finding this so helpful. So, Tody I tried this rose, and decided to use my Lyra Rembrandt Polycolour set of72 pencils. I had a really hard time matching up the colours with what I have available in this set. Although there are 72 colours to choose from. My rose looks really horrible, to say the least. White specks remain, even after blending with thinners. I used the same thinners to blend my cheap set of supermarket bought Steadtler 36 as well as Faber Castel 24 wax pencils, and those results are really quite pleasing. Can one use the same solvents, to blend both wax and oil-based pencils, like the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolour pencils are? I am assuming that the cheap supermarket pencils are wax based pencils.

It is the art spectrum odourless mineral spirit, but any brand will do :)

Why not add an indigo blue over the walnut brown for the shadows instead of the the black and slightly feather the indigo blue over the dark red to add some different color to the petals. I would also have added some very subtle purples and violets for the petals for added depth.

Depends on the atmosphere where the rose is located, you can do that but she probably drew the rose in a space full of warm tones

Oops found it. Do have a ? What would you use if you do not have mineral spirits? I do however have it but I’m doing this in a sketchbook and do not want the oil bleeding through. Hopefully you tell us. 😊

I have found that mineral spirits are the most reliable solvent to use, since they do the job well and evaporate away without leaving a trace on most papers... however if you are finding that is leaving an oily stain on your paper, (something I have only ever seen occur when I used way too much on Stonehenge paper) you might try using isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip or a colourless alcohol based marker (Copic or similar) the alcohol does a pretty good job breaking down the pencils.. but I have found that some brands of pencil blend better than others with this method. hope that helps :)

wow, I love the rose! Thank you! I would love if you would make a tutorial without the use of any solvents. The use of solvents with coloured pencils is very unusual outside of the area in or around US/Canada/Australia. In my country they're also really hard to get, because you always need to import them or buy a few liter in a shop for tools or wall paint. We blend everything in the traditional way, step by step in the colouring process, while layering. Rarely some people use a blender pencil (most likely at the very end but not in between). Of course this technique requires much more work and knowledge. Unfortunately such tutorials are hard to find because most people who do tutorials or show a few things seem to come from the US/Australia etc and they mostly use solvents and/or Prismacolor. Both things that are very related to this area and both things that aren't comparable in their handling with e.g. Polychromos, Lyra/Rembrandt, Koh-i-Noor, CdA.... without solvents. I'm so glad you also use Polychromos instead of Prismacolors and would reeeeally love a tutorial (or a few more) just with the pencils. Maybe? Please?

I am working on making a tutorial without using solvent. The only problem is, when I work this way I usually use my prismacolors on toned paper ( I love the bold look!) and I am not highly experienced with working outside those boundaries.. I am playing around with other surfaces and pencils to try and learn as much as I can about the technique before just diving straight in. :) I do enjoy pushing my own boundaries like this, so It may take a while, but I certainly will make a solvent free beginners tutorial.

Great news! I'll patiently wait for it! :) Many people seem to use Prismas if they have them, because they are so waxy that you can "push/move" the colour pigments on the paper to blend them but you nearly can't do it with oilbased pencils like Polychromos or with very hard waxbased pencils. It's like a compromise in the middle of both techniques, but afaik Prismas are the only ones that will smudge like this. But on the other hand it's harder to do with Prismas because you can't get the pigments down in the tooth without using too much pressure. But also with Prismas it will still be very helpful because that's at least based on the same technique. Everyone will be able to figure out how to achieve it with their own pencils or at least to get close in the result, as far as the blender is not needed 95% of the time or absolutely necessary. I do own a set of Prismas (unfortunately from the bad times...) but I rarely use them. I use them just for some special things that are easier to do with them, because you can blend them so easy afterwards instead of i.e. Polys. Galaxies would be a good example that I would probably use my Prismas for.

Faber Castell Polychromos are the best. they are oil based. you can add many many layers. the wax pencils are only good for 2 or 3 layers. also the polychromos blend like butter. try using the white when you want to burnish or blend. i never use solvents
